Ants Podcast 92: The Come Tomorrow Review - Episode Discussion

We've now had three days to marinate in the release of Come Tomorrow, and Matt & Joe break it down track by track in an epic episode of the Ants Podcast. It's not actually our longest podcast ever, but it sure is close, tipping the scales at two hours and thirteen minutes. And we tried to be brief! Catch up on the latest four shows on the DMB Summer Tour, and shout your vocal cords sore agreeing and/or disagreeing with our opinions on the album. Opinions, we all got em, eh?

Boring stuff and way beneath their talent levels. It's a strong example of the sum being less than the parts. The violin, poor as it's been in recent years, was still a unique dynamic, and a good chunk of their classic songs absolutely rely on it. What you feel is finesse and dynamic, I find to be canned and unimaginative with regards to Jeff/Rashawn.

Well that's the thing about opinions, we can have different ones. Hey, don't get me wrong. I'm super happy you got to hit some shows and you enjoyed yourself. We all want that. I just don't think this current iteration of the band is all that interesting. Throw in predictable and safe setlists, and you've got someone who's been to 75 shows (me) who just isn't all that excited about seeing number 76.
You are spot on about Jeff. His role regresses by the year.

Same issue for me. Nothing showing up in my podcast library for it. Even went to the DMB Hub app but it just directs me back to the podcast app. And for those recommending Overcast, I tried it for about a month but couldn't get used to it so I went back to the Apple podcast app. I'm used to it now and It services my needs (almost always).

I've been having trouble getting the pods to download, theyll stream fine, but I like that they will download on wifi and I dont have to use data to stream on the go. I think I screwed up my setting recently.

But Overcast is fantastic, been using it for a couple years now.

Re: IDEA OF YOU, I'm 99% sure Boyd is clearly playing on the studio track and not just the "intro." Also this is one of the stand outs on the album guys!! The drumming/rhythm in general and the awesome Roi stuff which is beautiful.

iTunes can be pretty frustrating; Apple's "success" in podcasts has really happened by accident, IMO. I have to manually refresh the feed, and while it showed up on mine shortly after the refresh (right after we posted the episode), it's pretty annoying to hear y'all are still having issues finding it. It shows up on my Podcasts app. Are you subscribed to the pod (not sure if that matters).

    Matt,

Not trying to be a dick here at all but it genuinely seems like you play dumb sometimes to stuff that you definitely know. Just comes off really odd when listening and its not needed.

I was going to mention it in the pod yesterday (had a LOT of notes that went unmentioned), but the kind of fan that sees the band as infallible really is unhealthy. The way I see it, is: there are people out there who live and breath this band's music. Post a lyric on Facebook every single day. They're seeing Dave in the clouds, in their cereal. They get receipt #41 from Taco Bell and are serious when they snap a picture of it and quote "Coincidence?!?"

Now, take that fan, and then present them with the possibility that the band they love just laid an egg. Came out with a truly bad song. A bad album. Played a bad show. All of that is entirely possible, as we're all human. But nope, not to these fans. If they had to admit to themselves that this band that they put so much stock into has suddenly done something poorly, everything they build their day to day interactions on is now called into question. What does it mean, if the thing you hang your hat on, all of a sudden sucks? The glasses you view the world through start to crack. And you won't allow that to happen. So you shout down anyone who has an opposing opinion that isn't "LoVE" or whatever the hell that is. It's truly unhealthy. And there are certain elements of the band that feed off of those people.

PS: AND YES! True to form, I have a Twitter hater who stepped right up JUST as I was writing this post:

Happy to address any examples you come up with. In general I try not to "play dumb," even if I sound that way. It's natural.

Specific to this example, though, it was truly an honest question. Save for the random cville shows, the only concerts I've been to since moving to the west coast have been Gorge, and even then I skipped the Caravan in 2011. So that's basically 3 shows a year I see, and all in one weekend. Joe on the other hand goes to multiple shows all over the country and at various stages of the tour; he just has a better pulse on fan reactions than I do.

Add to that the fact that I purposefully stay away from the message boards and it was an honest question. If I recall correctly I even kind of led that question with a basic belief that the community, in general, likes it, but I wanted to get confirmation on that. Nothing phony there, honest!

Edit: You snuck an edit in on me while I was replying! Exactly to your point about me frequenting the boards...I promise you I absolutely do not. I like to banter in the podcast threads but that's about it.

Half embarrassed to say, no no, you're right on. There is *plenty* I don't know within the context of my current "following" of the band; I'm certainly not the same fan as I was 15 years ago.

Just finished listening (on overcast) & another great podcast.

Matt, your opinions are pretty much spot on with mine. I’d give the album a solid c & if I’m being honest, I probably won’t ever listen to it. Also, I don’t know if the band even considers growing the fan base anymore, but this album is definitely not the way to do it. My teenage daughter’s reaction to it was “What happened to this band? If this were the first thing I’d heard from them, I’d never listen again.” Yikes!

As a 20+ year fan, I’m pretty disappointed in the direction the band is taking. I too REALLY miss the elements that made (in my opinion) the band great. We’ve been saying #freethesax for a while now, but it is just getting worse every year. All of this, coupled with stale set lists & quite frankly, songs I just don’t want to hear & I’m not sad I’m missing my shows this year. I fear the thirsty middle aged women are painting a very different picture of what the fans want. Or maybe I’m just in the minority now.

I’m glad that some people really like the album, it’s awesome that it’s not a total flop. It’s just not my cup of tea.

Matt & Joe, thanks for the awesome podcasts this tour, I’ve really been enjoying them. I appreciate your time!

Disclaimer: no offense to middle aged women as I am a middle aged woman. The people I’m talking about though, I’m embarrassed for

Totally agreed with Matt across the whole album. I give the album a D, Again and Again and Come Tomorrow were the two stand out tracks for me. My biggest question is where's DMB on this thing? If this is the quality they have left for studio albums....they should stick with live show releases or do a "Live Album" with new songs from that year and call it good.

Matt I think you hit the nail on the head about the recording process.

Personally I think Dave is at a point where it is literally nothing but a chore he's obligated to do. He just wants to write things himself and then have the rest of the band do their parts to fill in the cracks. He has no interest in collaborating with anyone in the writing process until he has a skeleton of a song laid out. It handcuffs the music and like you said, wastes the talent that is there.

I like the album more than you but less than joe. Im at like a 6.5-6.75/10. A&A, COCO, She, VITR and IOY are the best tracks on the album. Everything else is dave solo, and I think the quality dropoff there is very evident. I like TGIY and Here on Out is decent, but none of those belong on a full band album.

Listening now. Good analysis of the tracks.

One quick note about BKDKDKDKDKDKKKDKKDDK: on the Sirius XM thing, Dave said that they "didn't have room" for the rest of it on the album. What's that about? The album's only 54 minutes, which allows for more than enough space to fit more interesting music, unless they're considering the vinyl. And as dumb as the Be Yourself lyrics are, the music is a lot of fun.

I'm more forgiving of this album than you are, Matt, giving it a solid B, maybe B-. Maybe it had the benefit of low expectations, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. There are some decent songs on here, especially Samurai Cop (I really like this song), VITR, Again and Again and Come On Come On. I enjoyed Can't Stop and B&BB more than I thought. I also enjoyed Here On Out, but that brings me to the Jeff Coffin on the milk carton point.

If anyone asks me why I like AFTW more than this, it is because, whatever its flaws, it sounds like the Dave Matthews Band. Jeff Coffin was not on a milk carton for AFTW. While Carter and Stefan make themselves known, I still want to hear the saxophone, and not just on some Campbell's Soup canned horn lines.

When a new record comes out, I like to go back and listen to the older albums. Whatever flaws the Big 3 may have, we put them on a pedestal for a reason. Especially on Crash on BTCS, the band had such swagger, such balls in the studio. There are so many touches and details that are just lacking from Everyday on. Listen to Tim's guitar clicks on Say Goodbye, the slide whistle on Proudest Monkey, all of DIDO, all of Two Step, the playfulness of LIOG, the outro to Rapunzel, the massive atmospherics of Crush and Dreaming Tree. Will we ever hear a studio track like #41, that has sax and violin (well, maybe not this anymore) solos that build to something? Why pull a talent like Jeff Coffin from the Flecktones if you aren't going to let him contribute to more songs?

I know you can say, "Well, this is where Dave and the band is right now." I understand that, but the Big 3 represents what the band is capable of when they want to put the work in. It doesn't have to be exactly the same, but I would like it to be more than several nice 3.5 to 4.5 minute pop songs. I want one more epic masterpiece before this band is done. Drunken Soldier was almost that, but not quite. Come Tomorrow is a nice album, but not close to what this band was once capable of, and I believe still is capable of.

I'm fine with Here on Out and When I'm Weary as Dave solo tracks. They do add variety to the album, but they also stand on their own as some of the better songs on the album. I'm a fan of songs having that string accompaniment. I don't know that they deserve the criticism just for being Dave-only. I don't want to compare DMB to the Beatles, but it feels reactionary like opposing Yesterday or Blackbird for being Paul solo on a Beatles album. If the song's good and it works within the album, it doesn't matter as much who isn't on it. But TGIY as Dave only - I gotta agree it is lame that this was Dave only when it could have been improved by the other band members.

Also, if I'm going to give out an MVP award for this album. It would go to Fonz. As lazy of an effort as most seem to think this album is - he certainly did not mail it in (neither did Carter for that matter).
Ehem... you guys stole my line!

    Good podcast.

iTunes can be pretty frustrating; Apple's "success" in podcasts has really happened by accident, IMO. I have to manually refresh the feed, and while it showed up on mine shortly after the refresh (right after we posted the episode), it's pretty annoying to hear y'all are still having issues finding it. It shows up on my Podcasts app. Are you subscribed to the pod (not sure if that matters).
I am subscribed (of course) Still nothing. Updated a bunch. re started the phone. Never had a problem before. I like the Apple app for ease of offline listening but maybe to hear this review I gotta get overcast.
