I won't argue with anyone with regards to the motivations for entering Afghanistan, the costs of the war overall, whether that's what America's military should be used for, etc.

But those are all lessons that should inform our next military decision to engage in a new place. In Afghanistan the costs have already been suffered, and the decision should be one of continued cost to America vs. the benefits of being there. If where we are today is that Afghanistan relies on an American presence to avoid atrocities like this, and that we can stop those from happening at very little continued cost to us, then I feel like we should do that, and that's NOT an endorsement of our entire 20 year stretch in Afghanistan - it's an endorsement of what provides the best future at this moment given that 20 year stretch.

The scariest thing to me is that Biden showed us, in July, just how little he knows about foreign affairs by saying there is a small chance the Taliban takes over Afghanistan. This is the same guy in charge of making important decisions on our souther border, the economy, COVID response, etc. I just don't buy the argument that "any president would have the same mess on their hands". Frankly, the Taliban flexing some muscle in the mideast might be good as it will likely compete with Iran. Mideast geopolitics is depressing.

This was never going to be a stable withdraw, it couldve been handled been slightly better for sure, but thats about it. There was inevitably going to be a mess that happened when we left, and the government has probably known that for a decade+.

The "variables" youre talking about took hold many years ago, its not like much has been drastically changing over there in the last ten years. The war was always a failure and was only for companies like Halliburton and Lockheed Martin to make obscene amounts of money off the backs and blood of american soldiers.

I’m not 100% convinced it is the right decision but I’m about 70% of the way to saying yes.

Could things have been done differently? Oh, absolutely. A more phased withdrawal that had more stated goals and guidelines would be one.

There needs to be a thread on the Afghanistan withdrawal. People who support withdrawal but don't like how it's done have no better option, and it's this attitude that leads to forever war. They expect competence when the entire lesson of the war is the US is not competent! 1/n


Some background: the US as of 2018 could not even secure the two-mile road between the embassy and the airport. They had to travel by helicopter. This is not like Vietnam, where the major cities at least were pacified. 2/n


So the argument has to be the US, who literally can't do anything in Afghanistan in 20 years, was suddenly going to competently run the Kabul airport, which they can't get to but by helicopter, under the most desperate conditions possible. If they only had a few more months 4/n
