It's just near-impossible to even begin comparing a pitcher in 2021 to those of past eras. I mean, we have the dead-ball era to contend with; then the pre/post lowering of the mound. The steroid era. And now the pitch-count/launch-angle era.
deGrom's peak from 2018 to now is about as good as anyone has had in the modern era. Another year and it will rival what Koufax did. But deGrom got a late start to his career, and the pitch count stuff really limits pitchers from going the distance; so A) his career counting stats will never be that high (and the shortened 2020 season didn't help), and B) the job of a pitcher today is much different than it was in the 70s-early 00's.
Personally, I think deGrom has already made his case for Cooperstown. He's been the best pitcher in the game since 2018 and I don't think it's particularly close. He single-handedly destroyed "pitcher wins" as a meaningful statistic (which is a good thing), and he's been the 2nd best player in baseball by WAR behind only Trout.
His dominance draws very few parallels. late-60s Gibson, 70s Seaver, Koufax's run, '99/'00 Pedro, Kershaw.
If he can continue to pitch into his late 30s and continue to re-tool when his velocity dips, he'll start building his case for inner-circle HOF. But for now, he's clearly the best and on his way to locking up a plaque at the shrine, so enjoy it while we can and worry about his exact spot amongst the greats at a later date.
