Re: Everyday 20th Anniversary thread
My wife were remembering how from the very first listen it sounded very much like a lot of other more "generic" rock music from time. We'd heard I Did It as a single and were okay w/ it, being just one tune, but when got the album and listened all of the way through, it was quite disappointing.
Ballard didn't know how to use Roi or Boyd. Instead of their harmonies being featured and getting solos, they were relegated to texture AND they added keys. Dave's guitar didn't just sound different because it was electric and/or baritone on many tracks, but also because it was less alive and unique. Odd time signatures and quirky melodies seemed to vanish.
The thing is, it's better than 90+% of the other music released that year, but it was immediately obvious that it was the least good and interesting music the band had released to date. And by a TON. It was an album that mostly stripped the band of everything unique about it except for Dave's voice. Maybe like a bad generic rock caricature of itself at best.
It has grown on my wife, but I still don't really want to hear ANY of these tunes live. I enjoy Everyday as it still elicits #36 and When the World Ends always sounded pretty good to me, so I don't mind hearing it live. The only other tune I like on the album has never been played live, and there's little reason to think it ever will get busted out on stage.
I would definitely buy a vinyl 20th anniversary edition IF it included the Lillywhite Sessions on vinyl too, but that's NEVER going to happen.
