Everyday 20th Anniversary thread

Happy 20th Birthday to Everyday! Released on February 27, 2001, I Did It, The Space Between and Everyday were released as singles.

I don't think this album gets as much praise as it should. What are your opinions on the album?

(P.S. here's to hoping we get an announcement of a vinyl pressing soon

It's not as horrible as most have said it is. The sound is just different than their original, and people have a hard time accepting artistic exploration, so they freak out over it. It's no more complicated than that.

Everyday and the fiasco that preceeded it and ultimately led to its creation can be argued that it changed (ruined?) the band from that point forward...but honestly it's not a terrible album...especially when the songs are played live. The album compositions did very little to showcase the musicianship of the band which is why it gets so much hate, and rightfully so. But I can remember buying the cd on this day 20 years ago and listening to it on repeat. It's not Big 4, but it's better than what most bands were putting out at that point.

I also remember Best Buy having these huge album cover promo poster panels over its music section, and in some places it stayed up for years afterwards. Idk who can track that down but I would pay top dollar for that set now

20 years ago, a couple buddies and I drove to Kmart to all buy this album. Honestly, I don't remember my first impressions but I've gone full circle (a few times) on my opinion of it since then. I'll be listening with intent today, thankful that it wasn't the last album they released.

Now lets get it on vinyl already, eh?

At this point in time it sucks more because of how it fundamentally changed Dave as a songwriter rather than the actual contents of the album (though there really are some bad songs).

This was such a weird release at the time. It’s an album that has benefited from the passage of time, but if you were around as a super fan in 2000 and 2001, this was a very unwelcome change. From Grace is Gone to I Did It in a matter of months...

Probably the worst thing to happen to the band until Roi died. Still don't understand the revisionism around this album. There's a couple songs I think are fine but it's still pretty bad, only Stand Up is worse for me.

    Re: Everyday 20th Anniversary thread

The first time I heard (most of) Everyday, it was in Stefan's hotel room in NYC; December, 2000.

I found a CD in his case labeled "CONWAY STUDIOS", where they had recorded it.

He saw that I spotted it (and knew exactly what it was) and asked if I wanted to hear it.

He actually said "You're the first person I got to play this for".

My buddy, who was with me, told Stefan it "sounded a bit like U2". hahahahahaha. I don't think anyone agreed with him.

What sucked was that we were listening on his hotel-provided CD player. He was really disappointed that I couldn't really hear his bass lines.

I distinctly remember him playing for me "If I Had It All", "What You Are", "Everyday" and "When The World Ends".

    We were stoned.

It was, at the time, the greatest thing I had ever heard.

You would have agreed if you were in the same situation.

He could have played Dave farting for 45 minutes....if I was stoned with Stefan, it wouldn't have mattered.

Production wise, I don't love the album but don't dislike it.

The songs live though are fantastic:

Everyday (only because of the crowd participation)
Fool to Think (so underrated IMO)
    What You Are (monster live)
If I had It All (love this song)

    Re: Everyday 20th Anniversary thread

Most people who were big fans at the time this came out will have a hard time looking at it objectively. It’s near impossible to separate the album from what it represented, which was a total change in gears (record-company produced change?). Change in Dave’s songwriting to a more cookie-cutter approach (charts for the guys), the stripping-down of Boyd and Roi for the most part, the inability to even play them live properly (Butch had to be brought in full time just a fraction into the tour), the abandonment of the incredible summer 2000 tracks, etc.
So yes, some of the songs might be pretty good now, and I can see newer fans (post 2001) really digging them without all this baggage attached to them. But if you were on board at the time, there wasn’t anything positive about it and you just can’t forget it

I remember a short video officially released on DMBAND.com with Dave speaking about the recording of Everyday and his excitement of playing the electric guitar...As far as the album it has aged very well for me. Songs are fun, brings back some good times.

No idea when I listened to the album last front to back. It's been probably close to 20 years.

I remember listening to WTWE over and over when the album came out, and also recall watching the I Did It music video debut on TRL and thinking "well, that was odd."

Also, to this day, I don't hear how Monkey Man turned into So Right. Both are great songs nonetheless.

I have one rolled up in my basement. It ended up with some water damage which I was bummed about. I thought about cutting it down a bit, would actually look better framed that way but it continues to sit.

I have a fondness for Everyday bc it was the first new DMB album that I bought (UTTAD, Crash and BTCS were already out when I became a fan) and I remember listening to it a bunch back then. prob haven't listened to it start to finish in a long time though

The only thing they share is the main riff. They don't sound the same because So Right is on electric and in a different tuning, also it has different rhythm. But if you learn both songs on guitar, you'll see they are the same fingering on the fretboard. That's the only way I can tell the two songs are related.

    Re: Everyday 20th Anniversary thread

My wife were remembering how from the very first listen it sounded very much like a lot of other more "generic" rock music from time. We'd heard I Did It as a single and were okay w/ it, being just one tune, but when got the album and listened all of the way through, it was quite disappointing.

Ballard didn't know how to use Roi or Boyd. Instead of their harmonies being featured and getting solos, they were relegated to texture AND they added keys. Dave's guitar didn't just sound different because it was electric and/or baritone on many tracks, but also because it was less alive and unique. Odd time signatures and quirky melodies seemed to vanish.

The thing is, it's better than 90+% of the other music released that year, but it was immediately obvious that it was the least good and interesting music the band had released to date. And by a TON. It was an album that mostly stripped the band of everything unique about it except for Dave's voice. Maybe like a bad generic rock caricature of itself at best.

It has grown on my wife, but I still don't really want to hear ANY of these tunes live. I enjoy Everyday as it still elicits #36 and When the World Ends always sounded pretty good to me, so I don't mind hearing it live. The only other tune I like on the album has never been played live, and there's little reason to think it ever will get busted out on stage.

I would definitely buy a vinyl 20th anniversary edition IF it included the Lillywhite Sessions on vinyl too, but that's NEVER going to happen.

A fan of most of the tunes live. I was 10/11 years old when the album came out so I’ve always considered it classic DMB as I was too young to get caught up in the Lillywhite session scrap for Everyday craziness. I do remember seeing I Did It and Space Between all over MTV/VH1 back then and thinking the electric sound was more generic. Has aged well IMO.

A huge dip in taste sonically-- and a product of rushing due to pressure (that never should have been there) from the management/label machine.

Still, removed from that bad sonic taste, many of the core songs themselves are great- which really comes out in solo acoustic performances like these:

I remember seeing that huge Everyday cover promo poster in a Best Buy as late as 2004. I thought it was cool seeing my favorite band displayed like that in a big store like Best Buy.
