The only carpet in my entire home is my stairs, and only because I don't think my old dogs can handle going down slippery tile/wood stairs. Guess where my Sheltie always always has accidents? She walks when she pees, seriously, so I think the carpet thing is just to avoid splashing.
My 16 year old blind Yorkie isn't allowed to use the stairs anymore. He just pees wherever he wants, whenever he wants, if we mis-time his outings. Can't really blame him. I look forward to doing the same when I'm old. We have puppy pads for him, which he would use for a while, but he can't even find those anymore, or just doesn't give enough fucks to try to.
