Had a guy come measure our house for new flooring. After he was done and we were just talking details in the kitchen, he started talking about back in the day when he was doing such and such and working with builders and them having to come back to fix poorly installed subfloors all the time "because... and pardon my french... you're hiring all these Mexicans to do it" etc etc.

I don't understand how people don't have filters to not say things like this around strangers. For all you know my wife is Mexican or Hispanic (she's not at all but her dark hair and dark eyes always causes Latinx people to think she is).

We have a few other quotes to get but he quickly put himself at a disadvantage for getting our business.

We know she's not....because you used this word

I do get what you mean - hearing Jewish or Mexican jokes or slurs, you just wonder what people are thinking

I debated using Mexican or Hispanic again but I dunno, Latinx seems to cover more bases or something. I know you don't care for it

And that's where my mind immediately goes. Someone who says things like that, likely also casually disparages Jews on occasion too.

You cant imagine the shit you hear on a construction site. One of my first jobs as an electrician I quit day two because my boss referred to everyone as a n*****, like instead of dude or guy or bud, that was his go to. Its both infuriating and sad.

The funny thing is, while this guy did the estimate and the owners are white, I'm almost positive the crew that would be doing the install would be Hispanic.

When people don't turn the doorknob when shutting a door. How hard is it to turn the knob so the locking mechanism doesn't click? Especially when LEAVING THE FUCKING NURSURY! Neanderthals.

They don't always throw up, but when they do, it's on the carpet.....and in the middle of the night.

What locking mechanism? Not sure I understand.

Are you saying you have a door that automatically locks, but if you twist the doorknob while you are closing it, then it won't lock?

minor irritant: when a recipe is far off on timing.

example - made a crock pot turkey chili earlier this week via recipe online. it said to cook the ground turkey in a skillet first, which would take "5-6 minutes."

it takes much longer than that, brenda.

i say its a minor irritant cause these days i know how long things take to cook and i use recipes as a general guideline rather than treating it like its weight in gold. its more of a shake my head and move on with my life sorta thing

but that's what this thread is for.

I think he's saying he doesn't want the latch to hit the strike plate and click into the hole. Rather, you should turn the the knob and then once the door is closed, release the knob. I do that when I'm actively trying to be quiet but not typically.

I'm down with this. I tend to just disregard cook times. Especially when they involve the instant pot. "4 minute shredded chicken!" doesn't account for the 10 minutes it takes for the damn thing to pressurize.

My old boy Carter (RIP) would ask to go out to throw up. We didn’t always make it but it was awfully nice of him to at least try.

yeah it makes me wonder what the writers of the recipe thought.

"hey i know it takes like 10-15 minutes to cook the turkey but i'll just write that it takes only 5-6. my readers wont be annoyed."

unrelated: my son's last day in the baby room at daycare is today and on monday he starts in the toddler room. big boy is movin on up! from a financial standpoint, toddler rooms are cheaper than baby rooms. it makes sense. so i was psyched that our weekly daycare bill was going to be cheaper. then i learned that it's going to be $12/week less. like...wa-fucking-hoo.

but on the plus side, my daughter is done with daycare in august, so that'll be $1200/month back into our pockets. i'm sure that'll vanish into some other stupid bill though lol

Just wondering if they say a short cook time because it'll finish cooking once in the crock pot. Been a long time since I've cooked anything turkey, but does turkey have some juices in while cooking? Maybe some of the juice needs to cook out into the chili? Just my thought.

i had considered that but the recipe clearly said "cook through until no longer pink"

We've got one in the baby room and a 2.5 year old somewhere further up the chain. Yeah it's usuall like $5-10 cheaper every time they move up, but better than nothing! Now that we've got 2 in day care as of this year, we're looking forward to be doing done with both our car payments this summer and fall.

i guess i had forgotten how small of a decrease it is from baby->toddler room, since my daughter did that transition what feels like an eternity ago.

at our place, toddler->preschool tuition is like $45 in savings which is pretty decent

The only carpet in my entire home is my stairs, and only because I don't think my old dogs can handle going down slippery tile/wood stairs. Guess where my Sheltie always always has accidents? She walks when she pees, seriously, so I think the carpet thing is just to avoid splashing.

My 16 year old blind Yorkie isn't allowed to use the stairs anymore. He just pees wherever he wants, whenever he wants, if we mis-time his outings. Can't really blame him. I look forward to doing the same when I'm old. We have puppy pads for him, which he would use for a while, but he can't even find those anymore, or just doesn't give enough fucks to try to.

My aunt died unexpectedly last night. I think it was a stroke, my uncle said she started speaking nonsense and then just out. 45 minutes of cpr, to no avail. Just super shitty.

And then my own depression/anxiety making me feel guilt for using a bereavement day even though my boss told me too. My brain can be super irritating at times.

Man I'm sorry to hear that.

And don't let that bother you. It's great to have a boss that would encourage you to take that time. Better than to have the kinda boss or company that would say bereavement only applies to immediate family, and tell you to take a sick or vacation day. Just one way to look at it

I am so sorry to hear that. But I can't stress enough how lucky it is to have a boss like that.

When my dad died last year, I just asked for off the day we held the funeral, and my editor kept asking if I wanted more time. It's comforting having support like that outside of your family/friends circle (though I consider my boss a friend, too).

Thanks for the kind words. And I am grateful for nice boss, it’s just my own fucked up brain that’s the issue.

There are people who use stupid fonts and colors in their emails, but then there are at least 2 people in my company who have their page color set to something annoying. So emails from them are on a beige parchment looking background. I fucking hate it, and most of the time when I have to respond I change it to white.

My fb account was hacked, and I can't recover it. Oh well, probably for the best.
