***Antsmarching.org’s Top Films of 2017***

It’s time for our 9th annual film poll!

Like always, the deadline for submissions is delayed until the weekend of the Academy Awards in early March so as to give users much needed time to catch up on all of the stuff they’ve been meaning to watch.

In the meantime, feel free to use this thread to discuss what you liked, what you didn’t like, what you’re most looking forward to seeing, etc.

1) Final submissions are due by noon EST on March 2, 2018. Results will be announced before the Academy Awards broadcast on March 4, 2018.

2) Votes should be PMed to me here on Ants. Please remember to number your lists in order to simplify things.

3) Lists are capped at 50, with a minimum of 10 entries necessary to be scored.

4) As a general rule of thumb, a theatrical release is eligible if it was designated as a limited release in 2017. For example The Post, Molly’s Game, and Hostiles do not get wide releases until January. For our purposes, however (and those of Oscar eligibility), a limited release in December means they count. Films that only had festival screenings and no accompanying theatrical release are not similarly eligible.

Documentary features are eligible, as are HBO Original Films. Miniseries are not. Most notably (and controversially) this year, I will count votes for Twin Peaks: The Return, even though I would never consider it eligible on my own personal list. If you watched it and want to include it, fine. If you watched it and don’t want to include it, also fine. I’ll leave it up to personal preference.

If there are any other questions regarding eligibility, please feel free to ask.

5) Since final submissions are not due for over two months, a “secret ballot” rule is almost unenforceable. I love the spirit behind it though and would ask that as the deadline gets closer, people use their best judgment and stop posting preliminary lists. We don’t want to needlessly ruin the suspense of the final results. I won’t bring this up again unless I see it being a problem in the weeks leading up to the deadline.

As a frame of reference, here are the top 10 lists for the last eight years:
2009 – WINNER: Moon
2010 – WINNER: Black Swan
2011 – WINNER: Drive
2012 – WINNER: Silver Linings Playbook
2013 – WINNER: 12 Years a Slave
2014 – WINNER: Gone Girl
2015 – WINNER: Room
2016 – WINNER: La La Land

And just like the last five years, we'll also be polling Favorite Male Performance (Lead AND Supporting), Favorite Female Performance (Lead AND Supporting), Favorite Director, and Favorite Screenplay (Adapted OR Original).

Anyone interested should submit a list of their top 3 to 5 in each category, and then I'll attempt to reveal the winners contemporaneously with the Oscars broadcast.

Re: ***Antsmarching.org’s Top Films of 2017***

Based on our conversations in the movie thread, I know a lot of you are still catching up on watching things before our early March deadline. I was bored over the weekend though so I broke down our 8 years of voting to determine which directors and which actors/actresses have made the most appearances in our yearly top 10 lists.

To get some more discussion going in here, I thought we could treat the whole thing like a guessing game. We have 13 directors who have had multiple entries on our lists, and we also have 13 actors/actresses who have made at least 4 appearances in the 80 films we've awarded over that period.

The directors list is a lot easier to figure out so please avoid looking back at our past results to figure it out. You should easily be able to do so. As for acting, there are about 4 or 5 people I never would've expected to see included.

Guess away if you're so inclined.

I'll just stick to directors for now. I am doing these off the top of my head, so they're not in order.

    1. Denis Villenevue
    2. David Fincher
    3. Wes Anderson
    4. Christopher Nolan
    5. Quentin Tarantino
    6. Damien Chazel
    7. David O. Russell
    8. Kathryn Bigelow
    9. Martin Scorsese
    10. Steve McQueen
    11. The Coen Brothers
    12. Inarittu
    13. Pete Docter

I actually noticed that I goofed and somehow overlooked the bottom half of our very first top 10 list in 2009. That adds two more directors to the list. Oops.

You knocked most of them out though, Casey. I was going to treat the Coen Brothers as two separate entries, but that seemed like a dirty trick. As for your other guesses, Arrival has been the only top 10 entry for Denis Villeneuve. I expect that to change this year with Blade Runner 2049. 12 Years a Slave is also Steve McQueen's only entry, and although Up and Inside Out were well received, neither one of them cracked our top 10 so Pete Docter didn't make the cut.

Only Midnight in Paris for Allen.

I'll update the acting list shortly.

Take Shelter for Nichols, Boyhood for Linklater, and Gravity for Cuarón. No second entry for any of them. Edgar Wright has unfortunately never cracked our top 10.

None of those are correct. Nice guess with Michael Caine though. I had to go back and make sure he hadn't qualified because of all the bit roles he's played. Think outside the box like that though. The acting list is very tough to guess.

I'm ashamed I forgot about him since it seems he's done nothing lately but Jason Reitman had Juno and then Up in the Air back to back but I think Juno is before our time.

With acting, I'd say there's 3 more easy(ish) ones, 2 very difficult ones, and 2 damn near impossible ones (including our #1).
