Re: the (2021) summer so far

My personal thoughts on a Sister E1 is that its not bad, as long as 2 songs follow it. If its a 2 song encore and the song following it isn't of the Last Stop, Halloween, 15-20 min Two Step variety...not good.

I only went to one show in 19 and it was easy one of the best I have seen in yrs, much better then the ones I saw in 18
21 is better though for sure

Irvine n2 was paperwise my favorite set of the tour. They could’ve skipped the encore entirely and I still would’ve been happy.

Yeah I don't care at all about rare songs, I want them to play songs that are great that happen to be rare, not just because they are rare. I'm also perfectly happy getting a lot of the songs they have been playing regularly because they are favorites.

I haven't been to a show since they implemented the testing/vaccine policy.

Do they accept photos of vax card? Or do you need to bring the real thing?

    And are rapid tests accepted?

    Anyone know?

For Gorge photo copies of the vax card were accepted but not screenshots on your phone. I would call the venue to clarify any of this though.

I can’t remember enjoying myself as much as I did in back to back shows. The worst part for me was closing the weekend with shake me but I really don’t have many complaints. Had an absolute blast at spac.

Awesome.. I know a few folks complained about shake time to close the encore after such a classic set.. but I think it goes to show Dave considers that song a classic…. And honestly after that 10 song opening run plus DIDO they can do no wrong song wise… I mean Halloween or Two step or Ants would have possibly made the show perfect..

Yeah at that point it really felt like two step was the song to end it there. Also didn’t like seeing they cut shake me. But hey not getting you and me at a two nighter is probably the best thing that I could’ve asked for haha.

OK got cancelled...crazy. Bummer for the fans, but the public safety measures weren't going to go away, especially after Carter & Fonz got covid... It's odd that there are venues either not able or willing to do this, implement what most other venues have had no issues doing.

What about the idiots at the casino themselves?

We've got to be among the most affluent or at least one of the most willing to spend crazy amounts of money of shows, travel, and the experiences in the various locations as any band has ever had.

Two nights of DMB at a casino is a far larger license than normal to print money. The amount of money they're leaving on the table, or (more precisely) in OUR pockets, would theoretically make it more than worth the effort to accommodate the band's requirements for attendees. And these requirements are now standard thanks in no small part of Jason Isbell, as well as the Delta variant.

Mohegan Sun won't make this mistake. The difference between OK and CT in dealing with is as huge as the geographic...

    ...wait for it...

    ...wait for it...

    ...space between the two states.

I did it, that terrible pun...Oh!...yikes I keep doing it again and again...

    I'll help myself out...sorry...

Ha, true. But, I figure the casino bigwigs won’t even feel the difference by not having the shows. At worst, it’ll be like that South Park episode from the late 90s where Britney Spears had to take the gold-plated helicopter instead of the platinum-plated one

This. As much as the anti-vaxxers think COVID won't affect them the areas they live will start to see economic downturn, cancellations, and things closing again more. You can ignore it all you want but then the rest of the world has the freedom to choose not to come to your state/casino/business and spend their money. Again no one is owed the band coming to them. If you live in that area and this cancellation pisses you off and you are anti-vax then you have no one to blame but yourself and your elected officials.

    the (2021) summer so far

    The E1 rule

Over the 28 shows that had an encore in this tour (I don’t count Amagansett, and Chicago N1 had no encore due to weather conditions, 78% of the time the E1 spot has been taken by a slow song.

I am sure that the Ants playing the setlist game have this stats very clear, but it is still impressive.

In details, Windows has been played 10 times (35%), Sister 7 times (25%) and Some Devil 2 times (including tonight). Other slow E1 have been Crash into me, I’ll back you up, Oh, and Christmas song

The remaining 22% exceptions were those five venues:
    Deer Kreek N1 (granny)
Deer creek N2 (the song that Jane likes)
    Syracuse (Watchtower)
    Virginia Beach (The space between)
    Lexington (why I am)

and at two of those gigs (Syracuse and Lexington), the E1 song ended up being the ONLY song in the encore.

If we make a quick comparison with 2019 tour, the E1 slow song percentage was only 24% (10/41), and the most played E1 was Two Step (6/41).

I can understand the growing anger towards Sister on this summer tour (which just has the fault to be in the wrong place at the wrong moment).

E1 has traditionally been a "slow" song, that's nothing new. Go back to '95-'96 with those Dave solo Typicals; I'll Back You Up in Fall '98; Christmas Song whenever it appears; Sister ever since it debuted; various Dave solo covers over the years. I don't think most people are upset about slow E1s per se, because A) it's always been that way, and B) most slow songs are pretty good. I think what's annoyed people is A) the most common E1 songs this year (Sister, Windows,) have been the weaker ones, but mostly B) bad E2 songs like Shake Me or Why I Am. Look how mad people got at SPAC N2 because it ended with Shake Me, even though E1 was Christmas Song.

Re: the (2021) summer so far

Let me break this down another way just so everyone understands how abysmal these encores have been:

We are now 29 shows in.

E1 - Sister & Singing from the Windows compromise 17/29 or 58% of the E1s.

E2 - Why I am, DDTW, Watchtower, SMLAM compromise 16/29 or 55% of E2. Other encore slots have included: Jimi, Tripping Billies, Dancing Nancies, Rapunzel. A few better songs here but still not the most gratifying encore songs imo... Two Step, Halloween, and Ants Marching have not been played in an encore in 2021.

When you attend a 2021 show you have a +50% chance of getting some a mailed in encore of some combination of Sister/Windows E1 and Why I Am, DDTW, Watchtower, SMLAM E2.

Also as the resident 2019 truther.. Here are some of the 2019 encore songs: Two Step, Halloween, The Last Stop, Ants Marching, Pig, Minarets, BOWA, Grace is Gone, Blue Water, Write a Song. NONE of these songs have been played in a 2021 encore.

That they cut WAS from the SPAC N2 encore is rather frustrating. We heard it at MPP, but still. I am glad that they didn't do a AAtW closer at SPAC...We got that at MPP as well, but it was supposed to be Stay.

E1 N2 of SPAC in 2019 was listed as BOWA/Sledge...really bummed they went w/ the cover that night...only heard DMB play BOWA twice and the last time was 20 years ago...

    2019 > 2021 for me.

I've seen great opening runs from setlist watching this summer. I only went to one show (Raleigh opener) but have listened along here and there. It's tight, it's formulaic and I think people have adjusted the goal posts and are less hard on DMB, here in 2021

2019 had this feeling where it seemed like every weekend, a song out of nowhere could pop up...not every show, but at least every weekend.

2021 just feels like Drive In Drive Out maybe could pop up (huge fan, never gotten it). Not sure the band is really playing all that differently from '19, otherwise.

It's been a good tour. But I'm surprised '21 is being mentioned in anyway that might compare to '13 or something like that
