Last week I gave some advice on how to save money on food. Food prices are up a lot in the past 4 years, but especially since the beginning of 2021. Over the 32 months since January 2021, grocery prices (according to the CPI) are up 20 percent (keep that number in mind). To give you an idea of how unusual that is, in the 32 months before the pandemic (up to January 2020), grocery prices only rose 2 percent. Perhaps even more astonishingly, if we look at October 2019 grocery prices, they were slightly lower on average than 4 years earlier in October 2015. From a flat 4 years to a 25 percent increase over the next 4 years. That’s a huge change for consumers.

It’s a way to say they weren’t bought in frozen - which makes little to no difference for fries, but to some people it probably does.

And to put some more context to this, in the first 4 months of 2020, CPI for food at home grew by 4.2%. In just 4 months!

It’s a shame we’ve had to deal with the chaos caused by a global pandemic that was poorly handled and quite possibly worsened by an American president. But it’s good that wages have caught up and by the end of just 1 term, Biden and his administration - along with a very divided Congress - steadied the ship from a once in a century downturn!

Nobody is saying it isn’t a problem, it’s just a byproduct of unprecedented times four years ago mixed with continued price gouging now that corporations know what people are willing to pay for their goods. Why would they go back to the old prices?
