Baby Blue and Emily

I tried to search for the answer to this with no luck.... Who is Emily and what is the connection to Baby Blue and whether it is played or not when she is in attendence?

Dave and Emily are longtime friends, and Dave calls Emily her "baby blue" since Emily's favorite color is blue. Some speculation has been that Dave in fact wrote the song for her, however this rumor has since been debunked because Emily has been to 15 shows and has yet to hear the song played. Dave and Emily haven't spoken in some time, and this song is indeed tearing their relationship apart. Quite sad, actually.

It debuted in Tampa 2009, then disappeared.

I attended Outside Lands in San Francisco. It was cut from the setlist.

At the time, everyone said, “Oh, they’ll play it at Gorge!”

I attended Gorge. It wasn’t on the setlist for any of the three nights.

It was played every single night (except for the second night at The Greek in Los Angeles) for the rest of the tour.

It was allegedly going to be played at the Dave & Tim shows in Las Vegas.

I attended Las Vegas. It was not on the setlist for any of the three nights.

Cut to 2010.

I attended SPAC. It was cut from the N2 setlist. It gets played the very next show in Mansfield.


In actuality, there’s no “connection” between me and the song (or me and Dave for that matter - I've never met the man). This all started as a joke among some friends and it apparently has spread to the rest of Ants.

For what it’s worth, it IS my favorite off of Big Whiskey, and perhaps one of my favorite songs that Dave has written. It has a lot of meaning for me because of some stuff that has gone on in my life in the last year, and I’d just really like to hear it.

There’s not much more to the story, I’m afraid.

Emily is a mythical figure (not unlike Athena) who has dedicated her life's pursuit to that one moment of joyous explosion where she is granted permission by the 7-Headed God that is DMB to be present for and hear a live playing of the song Baby Blue.

Alas - the 7-Headed God has for some inexplicable reason taken umbrage with Emily's quest (not unlike how Ares took exception to Kratos - but I digress). As of the conclusion of Emily's most recent excursions to the vast musical battlefields throughout this country, she has still been thwarted in her attempts (though she has tried to outwit the 7-headed God by trasforming herself into Hermes in an attempt to not only conceal her true identity - but to speeden her travels).

So now we sit...and wait...for future travels and confrontations and fields even further from Emily's base of comfort...for who knows when (or even if) Emily will be able to triumph over all that is evil in the setlist writing of her arch-nemesis....

At one of the band's shows in 94 or so, someone in the band threw a beer bottle off the stage...it hit emily in the head and she had to go to the hospital...since then, emily has gotten front row tickets to any show she wants...the band/dave are kinda bitter about it now, so for every show that emily requests tickets for, the band delibrately doesn't play Baby Blue, even though it's one of emily's favorite songs

kinda of a weird story, but its probably 90% true
