What's the general consensus on Wizard and Glass? Because it's been an absolute slog for me. Only about 50% through. Books 2 and 3 were SO good and right up my alley. This one has been...not.

I never finished Wizard and Glass. I also found Wizard and Glass to be a slog, which was why I stopped reading it. And that was quite a long time ago. Never finished the series, which I need to do, but not looking forward to going back and having to try and make it through that book.

Agreed. I put it down for something like 10 years before I finished it

Is the second half better? I have very little interest in Roland's love history.

Some of my favourites are in this one:

    Crouch End (Lovecraftian awesomeness.)
My Pretty Pony (Jerry Garcia does an audio reading.)
    Rainy Season
It Grows on You (Stephen King does an audio reading.)
    The Night Flier
Home Delivery (King reads this, too.)
    The Fifth Quarter (see above)
    The Ten O'clock People
    The House on Maple Street
Chattery Teeth (Kathy Bates reads this one.)

I don't read his short stories but I remember The Night Flier debuting on HBO and liking it quite a bit. I haven't seen it since, so no idea how it holds up.

Wizard and Glass is jarring because it pauses the journey and you just want to get back to it. But just wallow in the story he's telling in that book. It's great. And it's important; more important than I can iterate without spoilers.

You'll be able to jump right back into the journey as soon as you're done. I had to wait six years for Wolves of the Calla to be published.

Been reading Nightmares and Dreamscapes for a long time (month and a half). Can't get into it. I've probably read 3-4 other books while taking breaks from it.

It's not his best short story collection. But it has some of his best stories:

    My Pretty Pony
    It Grows on You
    Crouch End
    The Ten O'Clock People
    The House on Maple Street
    Rainy Season
    The Fifth Quarter
    The Night Flier

Of the ones you've listed, I've enjoyed some and others I just couldn't get into. I've read roughly 20 SK books and this is my least favorite.

This is a few weeks old news now, but Hulu officially cancelled Castle Rock.

    https://deadline.com/2020/11/castle-...lu-1234608556/

Kind of a bummer. I enjoyed both seasons a lot and it really helped boost my interest in King's works that I hadn't yet read.

In brighter news, Lynne Ramsay has been pegged as the director of The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.

One of my favorite directors and one of my favorite King stories.

Finally finished Wizard & Glass. Liked the end, but just never connected with the re-telling of Roland's story or cared about Susan.

Think I'll read Insomnia next, because it looks like some tangentially required reading before the next part of the series. Thinking I'm going to focus on trying to finish Dark Tower series before the New Year. I have a lot of time off coming up and nothing to do.

Insomnia is my favourite DT book that isn't actually a DT book.

Come to think of it, I think I like the stories related to the Dark Tower series more than the whole series itself.

Watched Maximum Overdrive tonight for the first time in 30 years. So I guess directing wasn't SK's thing. I remember loving it as a kid, but it's MST3K worthy.

Insomnia is incredible. As far as required DT reading, Black House is number one. But you'd need (ish) to read The Talisman first, since Black House is a sequel to that. And you should, because The Talisman is excellent.

That's a lot of pages though. Talisman and Insomnia are long AF.

Finally caught up on some movie adaptations: In the Tall Grass, Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep. I liked them all. What a difference a competent director makes.

For those who have gone through the full DT series, did you read all the related side-works? If so, which do you consider essential and what would you suggest as the preferred reading order? So far I've done:

    The Gunslinger (Dark Tower I)
    'Salem's Lot
    The Stand
The Drawing of Three (Dark Tower II)
The Waste Lands (Dark Tower III)
Wizard and Glass (Dark Tower IV)
    Little Sisters of Eluria
    Everything's Eventual

I'm currently ~20% through Insomnia. Im wondering how essential Eyes of the Dragon, and Hearts in Atlantis are to the completion of the main series - any thoughts? Depending on those, then my plan would be to read:

    Wind through the Keyhole
Wolves of the Calla (Dark Tower V)
Songs of Susannah (Dark Tower VI)
    Talisman
    Black House
The Dark Tower (Dark Tower VII)

Is that finishing order fair and in-place? My plan is to have finished the list by the end of 2021

The Talisman isn't really Dark Tower related, although Black House pulls Jack into the universe.

Black House goes into more depth about some of the stuff that is mentioned/seen in Low Men in Yellow Coats (really the only DT related thing from HiA) and UR (from "Bazaar of Bad Dreams collection).

The Eyes of the Dragon is fun and a great backstory with Roland and Flagg. Not essential to enjoy the rest of the Dark Tower series though. Even Wind Through the Keyhole is mostly a pleasant diversion from the rest of the series.

Insomnia is heavy on the DT references, but as you'll discover later on they don't end up mattering quite like you think they will.

Honestly I'd just get to V, VI and VII and worry about the other books later. They're good though, and in some cases have more interesting ideas than what King ended up doing with the main series.

There's also a picture book by "Beryl Evans" called Charlie the Choo-Choo.
