MSG is a great album. I saw them at MSG once - I think the last of the 3 times they played there which was 2009. Was a good show (it was not the live album show, that was 2007). It blows my mind that they fell off like this. Last I saw them was a couple of years ago at a small venue on Long Island called the Paramount (holds 3500 and not even sure if it was filled to capacity). I wasn't really impressed, which is weird, because I don't feel like much has changed music wise from when I saw (and enjoyed) the show at MSG (i.e., they still play a lot of the same songs). I do remember, even back to that MSG show, that some of the shit they did, even for me (19 at the time), was super gimmicky, like when the Sax player randomly showed up in the mezzanine for a solo. That was the kind of shit that separated them from DMB for me.

I guess I just wonder who is at fault for the downfall. DMB, albeit more talent, is in about the same genre and they've had no where near that type of downfall.

I think their sound changed too much for me. The Wanderer was a tight album, but by the third time they recorded Hey Girl and made it sound like a Hyundai commercial, I lost touch with them.

I saw them at the Jeep Outside World festival opening for Sheryl Crow. They were... a band that played.

Any Time Now was their best live album. It all went downhill from there.

That’s the album that got me into them, but I think MSG is better.

Just like CP is where the wave peaked and broke for DMB, MSG is where it peaked/broke for OAR.

I think they just changed a little too much for their core audience. I was SUPER into them, and I love watching bands change and grow, but they changed so far from their original sound that it made walking away pretty easy.

I saw Marc do a solo acoustic gig a few years back, but mostly went for the opener, (Chad Stokes, one of my all time favorites) and Chad blew Marc out of the water.

Marc trying to freestyle on more live song performances probably pushed me away more than them getting more poppy. I don't need a fucking slam poetry breakdown on every song. Just play the fucking song like it was written.

And I'm sooooooooo fucking over Poker and Poker fanboys. We get it, you fuckers peaked in HS, but they have other songs.

    /end rant

Chad stokes is a master at his craft. Seen him in dispatch, state radio and solo formats and all were incredible experiences.

not to hijack the thread - but yeah - Chad is one of my all time favs as well. He was my last pre-pandemic show and I am bummed that dispatch acoustic got canceled.

I also decided to refresh my memory and I'm not sure what I initially found appealing about them, because my only thought right now is "wow that sax player is too good to be in that band."

It's like pop country but not country. It's aggressively WASPy
