listening to LLD with Branford...now THAT is what sax in dmb is supposed to sound like. don't get me wrong, jeff is phenomenally talented, but imo his sound has never fit dmb. Branford though, wow. he definitely captures the spirit of Roi

I hopped on late and had a few friends say it was the best they heard them sound in years. So when I finally started to listen Lover Lay Down was on, but I didn’t know it was Branford Marsalis and I was like, whooooa! Jeff has been working on playing softer and more like Roi. I was floored…then Dave said who it was and that made more sense hahaha

The thing I don’t understand about that is that if you listen to Jeff outside of DMB he sounds more like Roi than when he plays with DMB. It seems to be a conscious choice most likely by Dave.

Maybe if he sounded too much like Roi they would all feel like they were replacing him. This way they have a sax but Roi can never be forgotten?

The way Branford played that Lover Lay Down was so amazing. I felt like Roi was on the stage with them.

I get that. I think it does a disservice to everyone to have him attempt to emulate LeRoi but I think he can tone it back a little. With as great of a musician as he is with the amount of range it seems like he’s just trying to play a little too hard for what this band’s music calls for

Rashawn is similar. Over the years he's posted clips on Instagram playing other gigs, and he's often much smoother, cooler, and jazzier than he is with DMB. The squealing is a conscious choice made specifically for this band. Damned if I know why, but there it is.

I hate to say it, but what I listened to from last night was flat out boring.. trier the first few classics and the new times and it could just be the XM quality but band sounded flat.. uninspired.. Dave’s voice is really rough .. which after 16 months off isn’t surprising.. he’ll likely sound better tonight.. I think Raab makes him over think it though. He sounds so good solo and with Tim.. there’s a conscious effort he’s really thinking about his technique rather than just singing freely like he used to.. I get he’s trying to preserve his voice, but at some point it needs to sound natural.. we’re all hearing it from what I’m reading..

New songs are ok.. but not great. Why does sweet need to return? What a snooze fest…. That song sucked 9 years ago and sucks worse now. Ugh.. just because he bought new ukes doesn’t mean he needs to return to this .. easily one of daves worst songs..

Second half of the set might as well have been any show from the last 2 years.. nothing surprising, special or out of the ordinary… in the set itself or the playing.. it felt very safe.. and all of us called ocean and windows. Ocean full band is not good.. sleeper

Hate to be a downer.. I was really excited about the tour/new album and last night just popped the balloon.. don’t even know what I was expecting but that was pretty far from it.. just wanted to sound refreshed and fun .. and instead they just did the same old same old same old.. for practicing for 3 weeks I’m not sure what they rehearsed other than the keys/guitar jam I’m sweet it was all the fucking same.

I think the end is near for this band..

Starting to think that this new album is going to be Come Tomorrow 2.0 , not sure why I expected otherwise. I truly feel like they're just not capable of writing good songs anymore

My 7 tropicalia point of view says that last night's show was fantasitc. Sure it wasn't perfect and there were some signs of rust but I listened with baited breath and enjoyed every second of the first DMB show in a year and a half. After what everyone has been through it really doesn't matter how the mix was or what they played. Our favorite band was live, on stage, playing in front of a crowd of 10,000+ people who have been locked in their homes so to speak for the better part of a year. Just being able to have this moment given how may people have lost their lives over the past year around the world was a moment of exuberance. Regardless of the setlist, watching Dave walk out on stage, put his hands in his pockets and just look out at the sea of human bodies was an extremely cathartic moment, not only for the folks in attendance, but also those of us who were tuning in at home.

Has anyone done a better version rip yet to see ? I did listen to the recording that is being passed around here so I can't judge yet but just wondering if there is a "Better" one or should I go with what we have?
