Dave Matthews story from WPLJ

Those in the NYC area probably know that one of the long-time rock stations (WPLJ) shut down last week. Here's a neat little story about Dave that came out during one of the final broadcasts:

Awesome story. My daughter was sick when she was an infant, and we were stuck in our room at CHOP so many times I can’t even count. One time Cookie Monster and Elmo popped in. Another day it was someone from a foundation with a handmade quilt for her. Little stuff like that made us so grateful and warmed. Can only imagine how these kids and their families felt to know that Dave cared that much. Really brings tears to my eyes

    Whoa--unexpected tear-jerk over morning coffee.
I think that story says something very deep and illustrative about who Dave really is, versus how Dave is perceived.
It's really telling that the guy was pissed off that Dave "just played a couple songs and left," and it was only because he pursued it more deeply that he learned that Dave went above and beyond what ever could have been expected of him. And he was completely selfless. He didn't announce, "OK, sorry now kids--off to play songs for the kids who couldn't make it! The world needs me!"
He just humbly, quietly did something extraordinary, no fanfare, no self-congratulation. And then his payment is being perceived as a prick.
I would say it's like a Jesus thing, but people would take that the wrong way, so I'll just say he's like the Saitama of music.

Him describing the state of music in the 90s and comparing it to today, makes me want to slap today's music situation. the 90s were heat. Grunge, rock, rap, hip-hop, etc. All great.

He also has done things like gone to kids homes after full band shows and played solo when kids have been too sick to make it to the show when it was set up for them to go backstage and meet the band. I also ran into multiple people at The Gorge who have kids in the same school system as Dave's and talked about how committed he is to their education, flying back and forth across the country in a day for parent teacher meetings. Comparing him to Jesus might be a bit strong, extremely strong, but I don't think he is a complete asshole like many people here do.

No but, but, he said kiss my ass one time so he's the devil. People forget stuff like this, countless benefit shows for everything under the sun and a litany of other things he and the band have done for decades. Bunch of super sensitive entitled brats.

This is such a cool story. It was on the day of MSG N1 2002, and the children’s hospital gig was about an hour upstate from NYC. He also had 2 other radio appearances that day, so it’s amazing he found the time in his schedule to make this happen.
