Re: Away From The World or Big Whiskey?

Big Whiskey for me...I'd also be interested to see how Ants would vote now. This poll started right after AFTW was released, so the voting was heavily skewed by initial reactions.

For me, I'd much rather listen to Why I Am or Lying in the Hands of God than any track off AFTW.

Big Whiskey is much better. These poll results are not real because of the time poll was created (less than a week after release)

    Big Whiskey.

I'm sorry, I just don't like AFTW. I think it's their weakest album so far, and terribly overrated because of Lillywhite.*braces self for hate-comments*

Re: Away From The World or Big Whiskey?

The more I'm honest with myself, the more I prefer Big Whiskey. It's far better lyrically and just more fun than Away from the World. Away from the World is packed with the cheesiest lyrics Dave has ever written. I like it, but it doesn't put me in the same mood Big Whiskey does.

From a live standpoint, AFTW has a few more better sounding tunes. Drunken Soldier, Belly Belly, Rooftop, maybe Broken Things if they played it more. But just listening to the studio cuts, Big Whiskey gets my vote.

Have to say I'm quite amazed at the comments here. When AFTW came out everyone praised it like it was the greatest album ever produced. "Lillywhite is back," "This is the album we've been waiting for," "There is now a Big Four," etc. Very interesting. My opinion has always been that BW FEELS more like DMB, while AFTW SOUNDS more like DMB. Overall, I'd have to pick BW, but there are some outstanding songs on AFTW, especially The Riff, SO>DS, and BT.

Re: Away From The World or Big Whiskey?

Big Whiskey...it felt like they poured a lot of emotion and passion into it. It's not as good as a lot of what they did before, but I feel it was a heartfelt tribute to Leroi and an album that covered a wide variety of sounds and emotions in under 55 minutes.

Away From the World...sounds like it was just done to please old fans. Which, being a fan of their old stuff, I can't say worked.

Still AFTW for me. Broken Things, Snow Outside, Rooftop, and Drunken Soldier are all excellent studio tracks. I also enjoy Belly Belly Nice, If Only, and Rooftop.

The only songs on Big Whiskey I could tolerate live are Why I Am and Squirm. It's a well produced album but DMB is a live band, so I look at things that way.

Re: Away From The World or Big Whiskey?

Away From the World is an absolutely fanastic album through and through. The more I listen to it the more it feels like I'm listening to my old band again. It bums me out that they don't give it more attetion in a live setting. Broken Things is one of the best songs this band has produced in a long time and deserves more love. I won't get my hopes up, but I'd love to see them bust that out this Saturday in Mansfield!

I just think the album as a whole is a real comprehensive compilation of the bands history. Every song sounds like it could be on another album and I think that's pretty cool. For instane, Snow Outside sounds like it could be on Crash, Rooftop sounds like it could be on Crash, Gaucho sounds like it would fit on Busted Stuff, If Only sounds like it could be on Everyday or Stand Up and so on.

Away From the World for me. I actually really like the album aside from The Riff, which I haven't been able to get into yet. I do not understand the hate it gets on the site and I wish they'd play more from it.

Re: Away From The World or Big Whiskey?

"Big Whiskey" is actually one of my favourite DMB albums. On "Away from the World" there is only one song (Drunken Soldier) that I really like. Maybe it will change when DMB come to Europe so I can listen to some live versions of the other songs.

I am quite surprised that most people here seem to like "Away" more. Maybe I should give the album another try.

this thread is really old (was started less than a week after AFTW was released)....There was a more recent poll a few weeks ago and it was much, much closer. Many people have come to their senses now and have realized AFTW just isn't very good.

Away From The World is the better album but Big Whiskey was better for the band's psyche and longevity.

The more I listen to it, the more I realize how terrible this album is. For me, it's way below every other album including Stand Up. Big Whisky is a solid album, Top 3...no, but it's been 8 years and I still listen to it and enjoy it thoroughly.

Wow... can't believe I voted for AFTW. Would vote BW easily now. I guess it was a combination of being excited for AFTW and the hype surrounding it and being burnt out on BW live at the time.

Just so many duds in my opinion. Broken Things, Mercy, The Riff, and Drunken Soldier I enjoy. Everything else is either boring, not memorable, and/or has terrible lyrics.

went with BW. AFTW is just bland and not lasting. still would love to see an album with cavallo at the helm without influence of roi's passing.

I think Broken Things and Snow Outside are stronger than any song on BWGK; however, top to bottom I'll take Big Whiskey.

I really wanted to dislike this record but I just don't. Yeah it's basically a Dave record but it is what it is. For those of us who like Come Tomorrow, I wonder how we'll feel in 6 months, or a year....

AFTW, if you can stay awake listening to it, is average at best. Mercy, Gaucho, Sweet is as bad as any 3 song run on a DMB album, and is second only to Belly Full, If Only, and Rooftop...Absolute trash. There's a reason they don't play any of those songs.

Or he heard the collective groans followed by silence after he started Mercy, If Only, Sweet, Rooftop, and so on. It's boring song after boring song after boring song...not to mention Drunken Solider became a mess live. Snow Outside and Broken Things are the only two redeemable songs on that shitty album

Mercy wasn't the problem. The problem was that the song segued into Out of My Hands. Mercy could have and should have segued into a better song.

Spaceman became significantly worse because Dave wanted to segue into Cornbread.
