Interesting...I was intrigued enough by this method to try it myself. Slight edge to BW which isn't surprising at this point. It tells me clearly that AFTW would easily be a better album than BW to me if the lyrics were better and the album had more of an emotional center. The lack of anything that really grabs me emotionally on AFTW continues to be what holds it back from being a better album to me. It's musically great, more often than not better than BW in that sense, but BW still hits me on an emotional level in a way that will keep me coming back to it for longer.

Notes of interest as I tried to put them in order in a playlist: I am not a huge Broken Thing fan like some and when it ended up hanging around with Spaceman in the middle, I put them both on and realized easily why: they both sound too derivative of early DMB songs. I've heard Dave do plenty with those little 10th chord progressions like on those two songs. I already heard Grey Street way back when, so why do I need Broken Things now? The lyrics are actually stronger than most of the rest of the albums, but the music really doesn't do anything for me. As far as DMB goes, it's vanilla. I'll never hate the newer songs that sound much like they were lifted right out of an old song, but they'll never be my favorites.

AFTW has really grown on me. I make myself stop listening to it for a day or two, and when I come back to it I like it even more!

The more I get to know the music and lyrics, the more I like it. I think BW had more instant likeability for me, but overall AFTW is better.

I wonder how the outcome would be if we did the poll again today? I think more people would pick BW although I would still easily pick AFTW.

AHHHHH I am so torn on this poll. Too Close to call...some days I think Big Whiskey just edges out the win, then some days I think Away from the World edges out the win. It's tough. I think its a draw. Two really solid albums.

Big Whiskey is a heavier album. I think AFTW has a great natural flow to the album that Big Whiskey kind of doesn't.

im amazed that people r liking AFTW less. on other threads people are bashing AFTW also and i just find it interesting. I think the lyrics, the music, the flow, everything blows BW out of the water. Granted there are big whiskey songs i like, squirm, LITHOG, baby blue, seven, i like every song on AFTW. there are no songs that bug me, like FTWII, or WIA, or Spaceman, or SM. AFTW is dave, BW is someone telling dave to play rock. Id take AFTW every single day of the week

AFTW is so much better. I really enjoy BW, but it has its really weak moments. and this album is just more natural, feels more like a DMB album to me.

Most AFTW songs are better than anything off of ED and SU and most of BW.

I try to listen to Everyday, but I get about 45 seconds into I Did It and have to stop. I like When The World Ends, What You Are, and Space Between (solo acoustic), but other than that I gotta pick BW and AFTW over it pretty easily.

If you choose to factor translation into the live setting, AFTW blows it out of the water.

Re: Away From The World or Big Whiskey?

I was thinking of starting this thread tonight, but then a search saw that it already existed. Like someone else said, it'd be interesting to see how the poll would go if it were conducted today. I was leaning towards Whiskey, but am listening to AFTW right now to re-think it since this poll clearly shows AFTW as the winner. Though I think most ppl were still on the high of AFTW just being released which swayed this poll...

Re: Away From The World or Big Whiskey?

My biggest gripe against BW is that it doesn't have any GREAT songs. I think LITHOG is masterfully produced and is far and away the best song on the album, but overall it always felt like something was missing from BW.

Now, AFTW certainly has its setbacks to being a great album. I really do enjoy Sweet, but man, Mercy > Gaucho > Sweet > The Riff (first 1:30) basically puts me to sleep when played in succession. I think if the tracks had been ordered differently on the album, then people might have been more receptive. They basically bookended those four with five really, really good songs. I would go so far as to say Broken Things and Snow Outside are two of the best songs that Dave has ever written, certainly post-Big 3. For me, the fact that those two songs are even on the album put it ahead of BW.

But as I think about each song... I might go Away From the World

Re: Away From The World or Big Whiskey?

AFTW just feels a little forced to me. Big whiskey has the feel of an album that was meant to be. Personally, dmb has 5 really great albums that feel like they came from a good place musically., big three, busted stuff, and big whiskey. And then aftw, stand up and everyday. They aren't bad, but they aren't really really good. Most people I talk to that aren't on ants would completely agree hands down that big whiskey is better and more enjoyable, and I'd have to agree. I'm one of the people who was ok with them drilling big whiskey into the ground. People love it. Shake me, you and me, why I am, and even some of the others are great live and get everybody moving and into the show. They're loud and fun and catchy. I wouldn't blame them if they played you and me every night. Just like I wouldn't blame them if they played ants, two step, and crash every night. Those are what make shows fun for me, when the crowd goes nuts to hear a song.
I mean yeah, you and me isn't my favorite and I love hearing stuff like crazy easy. But do you think drunk stifler and his wannabe hippy gf give a shit?
Maybe it's just because I come from a different band who plays a similar set of their absolute best collection of songs with rare ones thrown in now and again.the foo fighters play all my life, the best of you, times like these, and ever long at every show, and I still know people that go to 10 shows a tour. And they're still considered one of the best live acts right now, even though they aren't touring

Big Whiskey was definitely a bigger album popularity wise. I think most casual fans like BW a lot. With AFTW there just wasn't much hype to the average fan and I think that clearly shows with album sales, ticket sales and crowd reaction to AFTW songs.
