So many people in here want the past, and maybe it's just me but I could care less about that. I want to hear what THIS band can do now. I don't always love David's lyrics or some little choices here and there, but all of it is great for me, and I am grateful they are still pumping out new tunes. I really could care less if there is a sax solo here or if it's a small acoustic track there. These guys have 30 years worth of music to dig through, and all of it feels lived in and personal. Whether you like it or not is entirely a personal decision and I respect those who don't, but for me? I really just don't care. I'm grateful for more stuff and I'll most likely enjoy it, whatever it sounds like. So ditch the violin, bring in the orchestras, throw some acoustic tracks on there, etc. Who cares? It's music, and if you like it that's awesome. And if not, well there is so much already there to enjoy, and plenty of other bands with new and unique sounds. This has been stated pretty much verbatim on here before, but sometimes it just feels like the bands fans just don't like the band, which I really don't understand.
I used to like the band. I like some of their recent unreleased tunes, but don’t really like their studio work anymore. I’ve been a fan since 95 when I was in middle school. I’m 36 now. Obviously I’m going to change and maybe part of that change is me growing out of DMB. But I still believe they have at least one to two decent albums left in them. However, I think they get in their own way. That’s me though. My favorite songs are tunes like Dreaming Tree, Typical Situation, Seek Up etc... their new songs don’t have to be similar to these songs - but I would hope for either lyrical or musical inventiveness every once in a while. I think you can see my taste in DMB is no where near what DMB is putting out anymore. “You and Me” for example. Two different bands.

The 04 versions had a great groove and still makes for a great tune to kick back and split a J, or share some beverages. I also dig it as a driving tune on a summer evening. It doesn’t sound like a studio tune to me though. Those ‘14 versions were fun, and I dug that line “sticks and stones may break your bones but words will start a war”. But as per usual they truncated the hell out of it and made it a quick tune that doesn’t really go anywhere. At least the trading solos of the 04 versions gave you something to groove to for a while.

So the longer we go without any additional news it means that Dave changed his mind and we won’t see the album for awhile to which Dave will go back into studio decide he’s sick of these sessions songs and write new ones and then go into finish it up
And rewrite new songs again and we’ll just be talking about this for another 3 years right?

So pessimistic and yet so in line with what has happened before! I think this one they’re only a few weeks out from those overdubs and such in LA, it hasn’t been that long. Think if we hear NOTHING about a single or album by tour launch then that concern is valid. Until then, optimism!

If we want to get really technical, Joy Ride isn't 2004. It was soundchecked in 2000. Makes you wonder what the actual timeframe of the songs being made is. Raven is from 1995, Captain is from 1996, Dig a Ditch is from 1999...Sweet Up and Down was soundchecked multiple times in '99

Red Glare goes back to 2001? Interesting.

Yeah, just found out in the random thread a few days ago. It was “teased” by Stefan in a soundcheck. So at the very least, Fonz was working on the bass line dating back to April 2001

Almanac says Angel evolved from an intro to Jimi Thing, here's a 1997 D&T show with Jimi listed as having said intro

Good good time represents everything the band isn’t like anymore. Kind of surprising how many dislike that song

If Dave started the riff this summer he’d prob just sing time bomb or some shitty come tomorrow song

    Re: New Album Coming Soon?

That’s why I love good good time. It’s got a great guitar riff and the rest is simple giving Roi free reign and the rest of the song breathes. This would’ve been an awesome late album song as that feel good vibe quieter tune that every album seems to have. A song like that needs Dave to be strong and he is in all aspects on 7.10.04. If people can’t appreciate the slower jams like this one anymore then Fans will never be happy.

And now that it was mentioned about some 04 songs being older. Makes me wonder after all the issues they were facing they brought out new songs for us but ones they were familiar with to get going again. Not using any of them kinda makes sense given the state of the band at the time. They all just wanted new shit apparently whether it was good or not.

Good good time is a great song. It is the type of a song that DMB features on the road and runs away from in the studio - ever since the great collapse of the Lillywhite era.

By the way Crazy Easy is my fav of these tunes and I can't believe they ever thought to value Old Dirt Hill as a better song instead.

I guess I don't know the history on this, are you referring to there being proof they took Crazy Easy out and put Old Dirt Hill in on Stand Up?

Good Good Time is easily a top 20 song for me. I have always loved that song

Not at all. Just that they scrapped those tunes and went into the studio and came up w the Stand Up album instead.

I've been out of the game for a while and am barely getting back into DMB. So my timeline might be off here.

I remember when Everyday came out. I was a shocked 10th grader. There were some songs I liked but I was really wondering why they handcuffed Roi and almost refused to let the songs breath. Years later, I actually like some of the songs off of Everyday. However - there are no songs I like off of Stand Up. I can maybe tolerate some songs - and appreciate that the songs are a part of the DMB story - but that is the only reason I listen to them. I don't pretend to understand why Crazy Easy or Joy Ride were scrapped. Maybe they just aren't good studio songs. Maybe they sound too much like old DMB and they wanted to try something new. Either way, what started with scrapping the Lillywhite sessions began a trend of confusing swings and misses for the band (for me as a fan).

That being said - you can see they are still capable of making solid songs. That's why I loiter. Hoping they can recapture some of the magic I used to find incomparable and exciting.
