Re: Coldplay. Your thoughts?

I must say this band has easily become my second favorite right behind DMB. Really like Chris Martin's lyrics, alot of them are really good IMO. Love me some coldplay!

I really love Rush of Blood and Parachutes. The later stuff is cool, just never did as much for me.

i still love coldplay. honestly my favorite album is X&Y, and im not bothedmbfan, i dont choose it to be different, its just the album that really got me into them. and it came out at pretty much the best time of my life thus far and served as the soundtrack, so i really cant help it. i love all their albums and it perplexes me that people hate X&Y so much. i think every song on it except white shadows is great.

I'm the same way. X&Y is the reason I got into Coldplay, so it's still my favorite.

It's like So Right being my favorite song, it's what got me into DMB.

i can see how its poppier and a different sound that parachutes and Rush of Blood but its still got some great songs.

Square One, Talk, Speed of Sound, A Message, Fix You, Swallowed in the Sea, Til Kingdom Come...these are bad songs? If so, im glad i dont live in your world.

I never really liked them until VLV. That albums struck a chord with me. That said, Rush of Blood is pretty good, Parachutes is relatively boring, and X&Y is pretty bad.

White Shadows might be in the top 3 best songs on that album.

How can you not like that intro? So bad ass.

I really love Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head. I've been listening to A Rush of Blood since 5th grade or so, and it's one of my most listened to albums to this day. X&Y was a little disappointing at first, I won't lie, but I warmed up to it and it really has a lot of great songs. Viva La Vida was great on first listen. I hate the actual song Viva la Vida, but most of the songs I really enjoy. Cemeteries in London, 42, Lovers in Japan, Yes, and Violet Hill are among my favorites. I've never actually seen them live, but I want to.

I personally think Viva La Vida >>>> X&Y, but I just really like the sound they were going for on VLV as well as the production.

The songs are also more complex and melodies more interesting, but that's just me.

As for their earliest stuff, I still think it's great. I don't listen to it as often as I'd used to, but there was a time where I was listening to the first 2 albums a lot, as well as all of their (great) unreleased stuff.

I don't hate X&Y but the reason people don't like it is because it is a very noticeable change from Rush of Blood. It's one of those things where if you don't know Coldplay and heard it first, you wouldn't care, but if you were a Coldplay fan that REALLY dug Parachutes and Rush, X&Y was definitely the band knowing they were getting huge and trying to make that arena rock sound, as opposed to like theatre rock sound on the first discs. Its also significantly less dark/depressing sounding, so if people went for that it'd be a change, too.

    I still enjoy it, though.

Rush of Blood and Viva La Vida are both excellent albums. Parachutes is very good and X&Y is mediocre. (IMO)

Last I heard it was very close to being finished. Supposedly it's going to be stripped down and back to the roots of the band (Parachutes-esque). They recorded it in some old, beaten down church from something I read last winter.

I love Coldplay though, all of their albums. I don't get why people hate on X&Y so much, it's not a terrible album like most people say it is. There's a lot of great tunes on it. A Rush of Blood to the Head is amazing though, my favorite. Most of their B-Sides are awesome as well.

I think seeing them live once would be enough. I've seen them twice (both times on their X&Y) tour and the sets didn't vary much. That, paired with their ticket prices being pretty high doesn't warrant anything more than once or twice. They're not spectacular live, but their shows are a shit ton of fun and then did some cool stuff visually, at least on the X&Y tour.

I agree, it really isn't terrible at all. But I think at first, old school Coldplay fans were taken back by it. It would be like DMB releasing the big 3, and then suddenly coming out with Big Whiskey. It is still clearly the same band, but the sound it just a little different.

I like X&Y though, there are a lot of good songs. It just took a while to grow on me.

^ regarding the X&Y discussion - I dont think it was "bad"...it was just more of the same old re-used formula and felt a bit uninspired to me. Chris said so himself when he was talking about their change of pace for VLV.

When I first heard Speed of Sound, the first thing I thought was Clocks.

Found their radio stuff generally likable. Picked up a couple albums. Then I saw them live and became a really big fan, collected all of their catalog.

Working with Brian Eno was a major move in the right direction after X&Y. I do like X&Y a lot but I think it gets shat on a lot since it followed A Rush Of Blood To The Head, which was definitely their best album to date. The outro to Lovers in Japan is one of the more uplifting of any song I can think of

I love it too. I liked the whole concept of the album, how alot of the songs are about war. Alot of the songs from Viva la Vida and the EP Prospekts March are amazing.

The song itself Prospekts March i feel is very under the radar and underrated, it's probably my favorite coldplay song.

I personally think it's one of their best efforts. Cemeteries > Lost > 42 is a great song run; Yes, Violet Hill, etc - some really good tracks.

And I like the fact that they strayed a bit from the 4 chord verse, chorus, verse form, put some new instrumentation in their songs, etc.

Are there studio versions of Mooie Ellebogen, Moses, or Ladder To The Sun?

I think those are the only pre-2003 studio songs I'm missing.

Not too impressed with their live show.
