But I am fucking sick and tired of DMB fans comparing Dave to Bob Dylan.
And now, I would like to tell you why.
I think back to how many bands that have covered (or played) DMB songs in the past 25 years (other than tribute bands), and some very interesting bands come to mind (ie Jimmy Buffett, RRFB, Kenny Chesney, Howie Day, etc).
Then I think back to how many bands that have covered (or played) Bob Dylans music since 1950-ish, and names are extensive (ie Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Johnny Cash).
In comparison on song coverings alone (which my theory is not soley based on), Dylan's coveree's are more legendary compared to the "Kenny Chesney's" of our day as DMB fans.
Bob Dylan's songwriting has been recently compared to those of Dave Matthews (which I couldn't disagree more.)
I will admit that Dave does have several VERY strong songs based on lyrics, like "Seek Up," "The Stone," and arguably his best lyrics in "The Dreaming Tree."
Dylan has his strong points too, songs like "With God on our Side," "The Times they are a-changin'," and "Isis."
Dave's songwriting seems to focus on death and love on a constant basis (ever heard of BUSTED STUFF?) while Dylan's songwriting focuses on war, peace, love and faith.
Now there may not be alot of DMB fans that are huge Dylan fans, but for CHRISTS sake, please take some time to listen to a legendary songwriter. His voice is not as good as Dave's. His melodies aren't as jazzy or "jammy," but PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE....
STOP
COMPARING
DYLAN
TO
DAVE.
(Now, I'm getting ready for jack-asses worldwide to make smart comments. Talk it up, girlies.)
