Re: The Lillywhite Sessions Remastered

Well, I don't actually know if they are working together right now, but LW produced Away from the World. First time working together in 12 years.

Ah, then you are a bit behind. It was announced in an article (I think Rolling Stone) that they were working with Cavallo (Big Whiskey) again. But of course, there has been no word since then. But there's been absolutely no indication that Lillywhite is back in the mix. I think that was just a one-off thing.

I would have liked to see another album done with Lillywhite, but as much as I loved Away From the World, there seemed to be a lack of enthusiasm with that album. I like the idea of using Cavallo again. It would be the first time DMB has used a producer more than once outside of Lillywhite, so I'd like to see what they would do together a second time around.

I used to think I liked Away from the World better than Big Whiskey, but then I realized i just loved Drunken Soldier and that Big Whiskey is ultimately the better album as a whole. So I can get behind what you're saying.

What I find so interesting about the song Drunken Soldier is that it both represents the modern sound of the band now and features some of the classic DMB nuances of old. I think it's completely unfair to expect the band to produce the same types of songs we fell in love with 20 years ago, but I also see some validity in major fans' disappointment with everything from Stand Up and beyond. Drunken Soldier somehow solves this issue. When I discovered that Lillywhite had something to do with it, it made more sense.

I like AFTW more. Top to bottom I think it's a better album. There are more songs I like on it than AFTW.

I was going to debate some of the songs you like but I'm more intrigued by the fact that you put The Lillywhite Sessions to vinyl. Where do I find out more about this?

So with that said - tLS was recorded to tape? AAA releases in 2019/2020?!

    I guess we can dream

It's not really "true vinyl". There are pressing houses that press for DJs and stuff, so what I pressed were "dub plates", but they're similar to vinyl. I sent them the FLAC files and they pressed them for me. I had to move the tracks around a bit because I wanted BEF>Bartender one one side and I arranged it to flow a little differently.

I had to sign disclaimers though saying it was for personal use, I wouldn't resell it, etc. since it's not "commercially available" music but is in a grey area since it isn't officially released

Fair. I would personally bump up squirm from Meh to Like, and Seven from Don't like to Meh.

Yeah it's really not about the audio quality because that would make this project pretty silly. This just sounds so fun to do and have. You should make 2 more and send one to LW and one to Dave with a note saying "this should probably officially happen."

I'll write it up when I get home

I opened the album with BEF>Bartender and closed it with Captain.

Yeah, Rolling Stone and Relix. I hate to say this, but I'm still not impressed with AFTW. If I listened to it without knowing Lillywhite produced it, I wouldn't have had any idea. I don't know if it's just Dave's vocals that sound a little off, or what, but the whole album just seems lackluster.

I just listened to LWS again in it's entirety the other day and I just can't believe that it was never officially released. So much outstanding work.

    This should totally happen.

I would pay big bucks for an officially released LWS. Big bucks.

It's strange. I could never put my finger on what was missing either. However, if you listen to the original single of Gaucho and Mercy, the sound is way more opened up. Like the finalized mix ruined the overall sound of the album. Everything is very squished together and kind of too small sounding. The singles have this openness to them that I think brings out the sound better. The mix of the album sounds amateurish.

Woah, you're right. That is really odd. I hadn't listened to the original singles. Maybe they were going for a basement throwback feel. I feel like Mercy, for example, could have been exceptional if it had been better produced. Then again, I don't know what type of sound the band was going for. Maybe the were shooting for a more subdued tone. All speculation on my part.

When I listen to the band on shuffle, it's bad when a taped recording from 1995/1998 sounds better than a professionally recorded studio one.

Fully agree with this. I feel like AFTW gets unduly shit on. It's like everyone heard Lillywhite was producing it and expected it to produce sonically induced ejaculation or something.

For me, the only truly meh song is Mercy. But Snow Outside and Drunken Soldier are Top 25 songs for me. I think it's their best post-LWS album.

Does anybody have MP3's (or something that will open in iTunes) of the album? I have been searching, and I can't use any converters from FLAC on the computer I have right now (it freezes up and crashes the system).

    Thanks again!

    Thanks again!
Doesn't Zack have them on his site?

Managed to get it from there, upload it on my buddy's computer, and convert them! Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

    3 - Digging A Ditch (4:24)

    Side B
    1 - Busted Stuff (4:05)
    2 - Monkey Man (7:21)
    3 - Raven (6:24)

    Side C
    1 - Grey Street (5:53)
    2 - Sweet Up And Down (4:43)
    3 - Kit Kat Jam (5:34)

    Side D
    1 - Grace Is Gone (5:12)
    2 - JTR (5:36)
    3 - Captain (5:27)

Each side of the dubplate holds 20 minutes at 33rpm.
Thank you for sharing this. Very, very interesting. I've always hesitated messing with the track listing of tLWS cause I knew it was laid out that way intentionally... but starting the album with Big Eyed Fish -> Bartender is a pretty badass move. One that the old DMB would do...

I made your listing up in a Spotify mix to try it out and I have to say, well done. It really does showcase tLWS in a fresh, and different way that avoids the slower slog of those unfinished last three tracks.

And to think this all brewed from your Vinyl pressing project... pretty cool. I took your philosophies incorporated in your track listing and rearranged them a bit to my person preference (since I don't have the 20 minute per side limitation).

    In case you're interested:

    Big Eyed Fish
    Bartender
    Raven
    Diggin' a Ditch
    Grey Street
    Sweet Up & Down
    Busted Stuff
    Kit Kat Jam
    JTR
    Grace is Gone
    Captain
    Monkey Man

Anyway, thanks for sharing. Super cool. Love more reasons to listen to tLWS.

I need to go into those SHNs and remove the counting off drum intros to SU&D, Kit Kat Jam & Raven...

yeah I also think Monkey Man would be the best closing song if it had ever made an album... that outro works perfectly.
