I've usually only heard it when referencing meat sauce or sauce in which meat has been cooked (sausage, meatballs, braciole, etc.). I think it's probably been expanded (and probably inaccurately so) to marinara in some places/families.

If I remember my high school Italian correctly, sauce is technically "salsa". I can sort of see how that might transform into "zugu" over many generations.
