Re: Share your unpopular DMB opinions.

Leroi Moore was the most important member of DMB.

Even Dave is not Dave without him. Completely different band/vibe without him and definitely not for the better. If DMB started today, I would not be a big fan. May dig some songs but that's it. Even if Dave was still producing his "classic" songs. They would be different.

Maybe this should be in random thoughts thread.

Re: Share your unpopular DMB opinions.

A few years back I put together a playlist of my favorite studio cuts since Stand Up and upon listening back to it this morning I was struck by how well the studio versions of YMDT and EWU have aged. Whatever experiment Stand Up was trying to be in the studio, those two seem to point to the fact the partnership with Batson does really work in some instances. I would've loved to hear the album that fully leaned into those tendencies (more modern-leaning production flourishes and hooks - all while being true full band efforts) vs the grab bag album we got

Agreed! I think Leroi held the band to a whole different standard. I bet you there would be a # of songs that would have never made albums if Roi was still around.

Re: Share your unpopular DMB opinions.

Roi's brief section on studio So Right (2:47-3:05) is some of his best work. The way he comes in miming Dave's falsetto and playing with some punch to his notes and syncopation always takes the song over the top for me. As with much of the original 5 work, Roi is always the highlight for me. The way he draws out the one note with so much expression is what made him so great.

Well, I don't know. Gee. There's five albums of DMB songs that are amazing. But Do You Remember falls somewhere in there around 55-60 for me.

Do You Remember and Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin) is great material. Would not bother me to see them pop up still in '23. I need more releases with those two songs.

I like DYR, but Dave needs adjust his vocal melody on the first lines of the verses. He cannot hit those notes live.

I know Iím on the list of complainers. But itís pretty ironic that yours is about a 50/50 unpopular opinion on a DMB message board. Although thereís lots of people that donít post regularly. Iím willing to bet that a lionís share of them agree with you.

And when you look at things from an even greater perspective... this board only encompasses a small percentage of DMB fans; there are many many fans that will enjoy this regardless of what the boards say.

Fuck, I'm going into this album 100% blind. I've literally heard nothing from it, no live cuts no nothing. So I'm excited to hear one of my favourite bands in the studio again, regardless.

That’s impressive self-control. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it. Probably a smart way to do it. I assume you’ve heard Break Free, though, right? Does that song being included give you any predictions about the whole record?

I'll be honest, I probably heard it when it first came out (I was bigger into the band in the '00s), but it's been so long that I don't remember it. I hear the name Break Free and I start singing Can't Stop in my head. so it might as well be 100% blind.

I wonder if I did a blind reaction on YouTube (unmonetized of course) if it would be taken down. I might just do that for the shits and giggles.

Re: Share your unpopular DMB opinions.

Been holding this one in for a long time, but…

Some Devil is a bit overrated and is a good effort but not great. I understand Dave’s need for some creative departure from the band, and love that he explored the studio a bit with the solo album, but the final product was lacking in my opinion. Songs like Trouble, Grey Blue Eyes, even An Another Thing are, to me, throwaway tunes that never needed to see the light of day. Imagine a parallel universe where the band takes a year or two off and comes back with this instead…

    Dodo
    Joy Ride
    So Damn Lucky
    Gravedigger (acoustic)
    Some Devil
    Crazy Easy
    Save Me
    Hello Again
    Stay or Leave
    Cigarette Lit
    Oh
    Too High
    Sugar Will

I love this band. They have been a constant in my life since I was 10 and I am so glad they are still playing and growing old with all of us.

Oh and I don't care about the track lengths on the new album. That is making a lot of people really butt hurt on this site. That's my unpopular opinion

I think about this often. I believe we will cross that threshold in 2025, assuming the band is still doing stuff then.

I miss Spaceman->Cornbread. I know we got beat to death with it way back when but I love spaceman and Cornbread was such a good punch after that nice flowy groove.
