Re: That Girl Is You

It's absolutely not falsetto, it's mixed voice which is why he is able to push so hard

I’d consider it head voice, which is why it isn’t airy and pretty, like IBYU. It’s more vulnerable and I think that’s why it’s grown on me. At first, I was thinking WTF, but hearing it live made my appreciation grow.

I hated on the vocals pretty hard on day 1. So yeah... it constantly gets stuck in my head and I kinda love it now. I think it's going to work on the album as a whole. For the life of me I have no idea why they picked it for an early release track.

I've been stewing on this one for a few days now.

I'm converted. First listen was not good. But I love it now. And not just because I love Dave (that's obviously a big part of it)... It just grew on me. Can't wait to have it blasting in the car driving down the freeway to work.

Love the song. Wish it had been a one-off like Eh Hee. I could probably come up with ten vault songs that would have fit the feel of CT better.

I went from intense hatred to actually listening to it and enjoying it (still need to ignore some of Dave's vocals) frustrating part is that with just another take or two on vocals to get it from 50% right to 75% right and the addition of the horns like the live version this could have been so so good!

It's harmless and already shows signs of being interesting in a live setting. I like the bass line and for the record the first time I heard it I had the WTF reaction.

But after hearing the 6/1 version. Good god. Please work on your delivery. How can you open a set singing like that.

??? I don't get it, it sounds the same (terrible) live as it does on the album. Frankly, the live 06/01 version almost sounds better and I think this song is the worst DMB song of all time.

It's a terrible opener, that's for damn sure. It belongs mid set so people can take a leak. At least they did the crowd a favor with OSW

Yeah, it seems like a lot of people have converted from "WTF" to "Damn, this is pretty groovy"... I'm one of those people... The vocals made me cringe on first listen, but now they just sort of "fit" and give me a Some Devil album feel.

Imagine anyone else in the world being able to pull of this song vocally. Who else could?

That is part of its appeal to me. Literally no one else could or would sing like this. And I love the over-the-top vibrato, it reminds me of a 1930s female jazz singer, in a Jeff Buckley-sort of way.

The percussion 'section' is also being overlooked. Sure its not typical Carter but there is a lot of very intricate and subtle detail, with lots there to appreciate if you have ears to listen. Juxtaposed, of course, against the straight-ahead anthemic, if not overly simplistic, groove of the main body of the song.

Don't try to fit the song into some preconceived notion you may have of what the band should sound sound like. Appreciate it for what it is and you will be grateful you did.

I'm confused. The answer is nobody, including Dave. The vocals are horrible. And Dave's vocals have always been bad.

There is no non-dmb fan that would ever be like 'Oh wow, this actually works, or this guy is good'. Everyone who knows what a good singer is would say Dave's voice is not good, and certainly not in this song.

I’m in the “WTF —> damn this is groovy” crowd. It reminds me of recent covers that Dave’s done and added his own flair to, like Take Me to Tomorrow and Worried Man Blues.

On the contrary, the studio take is a phenomenal vocal performance and every moment of it is the way it is because that is 100% how he wanted it to sound. It's art (man) - using different timbres the way a painter uses different hues and shades.

The guttural sound is exaggerated to reinforce just how intentional it is. He is not singing the song this way because his voice "got bad" or something.

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to sing with that type of vibrato?

Dave is developing his voice and finding new ways to use it. It has been a constant evolution. Hell, the rasp didn't begin to appear at all until 03-05, now he has developed it further and is juxtaposing it with the falsetto/thick vibrato style he used in Seven. His voice has always changed from album to album. Yes, even through the big 3.

Wouldn't surprise me if he did it (guilty as charged) specifically to provoke the kind of reactions we are witnessing here. Most of the songs and music seem to be composed approached from that mindset, IMO.

well...some art is pretty difficulty to achieve....and just as shitty.

Its not necessary for Dave to do this. But to each their own i guess.

Its not a matter of difficulty determining artistic value. But as a singer who works on his vocals and vocal delivery, when I first heard TGIY I was thinking "Jesus Christ, now here is a guy in complete command of his vocals". He can go so many different places with his voice, and he does - not for the sake of displaying his abilities but for conveying yet even deeper emotions. I can't help but appreciate that, while genuinely enjoying the sound of him doing so within the context of an almost 30-year-old band that is still evolving.

If you or others think it is 'shitty' art then, like you said, to each their own.

**This is also doesn't mean I'm over here listening to the song on repeat, or think it is some great artistic statement. But their is beauty on this album that is being overlooked. It almost seems like some people are in a rush to form an opinion about the new material. And why these broad, blanket generalizations like 'shitty'? So a song is either 'shitty' or 'not-shitty'? Up to par or not?

I love the art card. Here is more ‘art’ for you. Yes, people actually clapped for this.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdZ9weP5i68

There will always be dedicated fans who try to find a deep meaning in Kayne West poop song, or Yoko Ono’s episode, or the vocals in this DMb song.

Just like there will always be people who find a bucket of paint thrown against a wall as something amazing that ‘you just don’t understand’.

Not trying to insult you, but you’re not gonna convince me Dave is even trying here. It took them six years to make this album and everyone got tired of waiting so Dave recorded this ‘solo’ song half drunk just to get the album finished.
