Fair enough. I think you should always be kind of prepared to have guests over in the situation you described, just in case. Not that you have to have an entire spread for a few friends coming over to watch a game, but have a back-up 12-pack in your basement fridge, or some kind of antipasto tray to lay out.

My mother always had stuff waiting for guests in the fridge that we weren't allowed to touch just in case we had company. Definitely an old-school sort of thing from a time when people randomly stopped by more frequently, but I think it's just good practice when you have guests every now and then as well.

I went to a graduation party recently where the host seemed to be banking on the fact that family would bring a lot of food, but due to a lack of communication, all ended up bringing alcohol of some sort. Not the worst problem to have, but it's embarrassing to have to order pizzas to make up for your lack of preparation.
Yeah, this is totally different than 'coming over for a game'.

Either way, you will always find more than enough food at my house. Just bring your own beer (unless you want the shitty stuff that's been left in my fridge or something from the bar).

I'll usually have some leftover beer in my beer fridge; but it's usually beer that they left last time they were there that I don't like, so didn't drink.

I don't keep food in my house. Right now in my pantry I have a bag of low fat pretzels, half a bag of cherry almond granola, and a two cans of tomato soup. That's it. If they want any of that, they're welcome to it.

Watch out; keep tempting us with that pantry and you may find some ants showing up at your door this weekend to watch football.

I always have wine, vodka and beer in my house.
Sometimes random bottles that people have left in the past, and sometimes random beer that people have left.

But, yes, if people were coming back to my house & I had nothing to drink, I'd have them give me 5 minutes to stop at the beer distributor.
Last minute food, I wouldn't care so much about, but I'm always good for having at least cheese / crackers or popcorn. Or, I'd order a pizza.

Just not how we roll, I guess. We're more pragmatic.

If I'm going to a friends' house I'll text them to see if they need any beer or what not. Since I'm going to be the one on the road, it makes more sense for me to stop and get beer than for them to leave their house to go get it. Same goes for when they come to my house.

And yea, if we get hungry we'll order pizza or something. If we have someone that can drive, we'll go to the store to get stuff to grill. Host will do the cooking.

    they're all carbs and salt
there should be nothing fatty about a pretzel unless it's dipped in something fatty

This is how I roll too.

Depending on the number I'll have enough beer with hopes of having a lot left because everyone brings some. Better safe than sorry and usually if someone is empty handed they only have a few so no biggie.

Food is not usually a problem either as I either will make a lot of something or am prepared to scale it up quantity wise as needed.

I have one friend who is always empty handed time after time. It is what it is but I notice for sure and don't get it.

Pretzel sticks, to be more specific. Maybe they have less fat in stick form.

I keep pretzelsaround. I think they have no fat. They facilitate beer drinking nicely.

Maybe it's just saying it's a low fat snack, not that these pretzels are lower fat than other pretzels.

All I know is that these pretzels are making me thirsty.

Host should have beer and wine. Guest should bring a gift and what they want to consume.

I thought this was the norm actually.

Maybe that's the issue... all my friends are drunks so a case or 2 just wouldn't be enough. I'm also a beer snob... I won't drink shitty beer even if that's the only thing available.

if you're inviting people over for a get-together and you expect them to bring their own booze, moreover you do not have libations to offer them, you're a terrible host/hostess and should kill yourself

This is usually how I do it. I'm going to a buddy's house tonight for the game and I just texted him to see what I should bring, he said he had everything he needs for nachos but has no beer, so I'll stop and pick something up.

But I'll always bring something with me when I'm going somewhere I'm expecting to consume something, if for no other reason it just feels wrong to show up empty handed.

Is this not completely dumb though? If we're all awesome people and bring our own beer everywhere, why should we also buy it for everyone and have it at our house when they come over?

Exactly, even if they say they don't need anything I still grab SOMETHING to bring with me. If someone invites me to their house, to watch their TV, eat their food and drink their booze I consider it common courtesy to show up with something for the 'party.'

what are thoughts on the people that bring something to your house and don't want to share any of that with you.

ive known people like that, they will bring a sixer of a nice beer and keep it next to them all night so nobody else gets any.

Exactly. I went to dinner at a friend's house and she told me they had plenty of beer, so I brought her and her parents a bottle of wine even though I don't drink wine. I just feel like it's good manners to bring something.

I'd never do this, I always offer to share. Again, manners.
