It's best to invest in vests, but seriously stocks seem to be doing pretty well these days.

I also didn't know you could withdraw Roth contributions without a penalty. That is great to know.

wife and i just opened up 2 short term fund accounts. One is moderately risky, the other not very risky at all. We're putting $ away to save for a house, so the 2 biggest things were to 1) have a plan, and 2) that the money is there when we need it

We figured that if we just moved $ every month into our savings we'd still see it as "available" money. This way its all going into a different account. The interest rates on the riskier one are about 3-4%, 2-3% on the other one. if the interest nets us a few thousand more over the course of 5-6 yrs thatd be a bonus, but at least we have a plan in place now

I'm sorry, but if your projected return on your riskier investment is 3-4% you aren't being risky at all. The way inflation and home values are moving, you're not going to see much real return here.

thats why in the 1st line i said it was "moderately" risky, relative to the other account. Its def not very risky at all, but the most important thing is to have the money there when its needed. It will get me more money than a savings account will, but much less than stocks (I also have a lot less chance to lose money like I would with stocks)

If I invest $50k over the next 5 years, I may have $54k to close out before taxes etc. Its not a major win, but its still better than a savings account, and the money will be there. This is a plan to save for a house, not for the point of investing

An 8% gain on this type of account seems highly unlikely. Again, with inflation and rising home values, those miniscule gains will not increase your buying power at all. Home Values in America are expected to rise 4% in 2014. That's what your expecting to get from your riskier fund after 5 years.

If your time horizon is really 5 years, you will need to take a lot more risk to be able to afford the home you want. Unless, of course, you think the economy is going to collapse again.

    Hey gang,

Opening up this thread again. Any ants doing a life insurance policy as a method to save for retirement? Ie., term, cash value, whole life...
My neighbor was talking to me about this last night, and he advised cash value. I'm 30 years old, single, just started maxing out my Roth & 401k
    each year.

    Thoughts?

correct. it's all relative to income, everyone has a different pay check. I don't have the luxury of a pension or employee matching. So i've gotta save big.

1st year in we made about $600, for about a 5.5% gain. Happy with the decision to do this- it wasn't about making more money (thats the bonus w/o much risk), it was about saving money for a house in an account that i could forget about

you have to be making a lot of money to contribute $18,000.

luckily PSERS gives a 21.4% employer contribution this year

great thread. I'm 25 and I have 3 accounts that I put money into each month. A mutual fund, an IRA and a roth IRA. my parents taught me the value of saving at a young age, so when I made enough to start putting money away, I jumped on it. It's pretty awesome to already see the money growing.

In case anyone needs a refresher - http://www.rothira.com/traditional-ira-vs-roth-ira

One way the Roth was simply explained to me.... Do you think taxes will
be going up in 20 plus years? Of course... So why not pay the tax NOW,
then pull out tax free when needed?
