I imagine there’s a lot of unheard material from the BTCS sessions that didn’t make the final album.

These are some songs that were recorded and not released:
Don't Burn The Pig - Possibly Dave solo, reworked into “Pig”.
Get In Line - Recorded during the BTCS sessions but not released.
MacHead - Recorded during the BTCS sessions but not released.
#40 (Always) - Possibly Dave solo.
Captain - Possibly not actually recorded, but Dave worked on it during the sessions.
Lillywhite has said there really isn’t anything beyond rough demos / jams. He Hines in and focuses on stuff pretty quickly

What I think would be even more exciting (maybe not more than MacHead, but still) would be the early/rough takes of the songs they DID release that everyone loves. I would kill to hear how last stop or the stone progressed from an idea to a finished masterpiece through a couple of evolving demo takes.

That would be cool, but I can't imagine this happening now. Maybe waaaay in the future when they're trying to squeeze every last penny out of the album, like Dylan's done with a lot of alternate takes of songs.

Re: The Batson Sessions: DMB Studio Efforts from 2006 Leaked - News Discussion

It sure would be great to get some more context about these sessions, as the band seemed to be in a pivotal spot in their career - at a fork in the road, so to speak.

On the one hand, it's easy to hear the "old" sound being developed further and exploring other directions musically. On the other hand, there are clear indications of the "new" sound or 3.0 or whatever it's referred to nowadays. Maybe the tension of these two sounds contributed to the broader issues within the band. I get that these are demos, but eve within these ideas there's uncertainty about pushing one or the other sound.

I mean, the band released Stand Up, then came out with tracks like IOY and Shotgun, which have the classic DMB sound with an updated twist. A song like Kill The King seems to capture the awkwardness of this push and pull between old and new.

Anyone else get this vibe or am i overthinking this?

    Walking down the garden path
I heard a pop, and hurried in
Saw you there, I dropped my bags
Little baby love, what have you done?
Out before the cops came in

It’s too late for talking now
    Drive me away

    Oh, let me stand here

Remember how you used to play?

    Somebody drive me away

Had my first chance to listen with decent earphones this afternoon. What a gift...I'm enjoying this so much. Probably more excited listening to this than the first time hearing CT. Probably the biggest wildcard is how Dave and the band is taking the news about the leak and how they'll react to it. What an opportunity to play to the desires of their fanbase. I could be cynical about that, but I'm staying hopeful.

Another thought...Dave said in an interview he wanted CT to be about love and hope for the future...might explain why he didn't bring in some of the more darker material from the leak.

This Cornbread reminds me a lot of the way Eh Hee was recorded/sounds. Any ideas if Eh Hee was done in any of these sessions?

I'm sure they don't like it, but I wouldn't think it'll be something they cry over. the flip side is if we ever had any desire to get 'finished' versions of these songs, we can probably kiss that goodbye. Not because it'll be them trying to punish us, I just don't think they will want to work on any of them now.

I’ll give you a hint: It’s the same reason Dave writes weak setlists, plays the same songs over and over, and doesn’t bust out rarities often. Laziness.

Just listened to it on headphones for the first time... upright bass for sure. I also wonder if he's playing on Shotgun. There are parts where it seems very basic and almost computer-generated. Could be wrong... but it's fun to start getting into listening more closely to pick up on the small stuff.

the instrumental bridge w/ piano on Idea of You (2:00 - 2:25) is achingly beautiful.

as someone who was around when LWS dropped, these Batson Sessions remind me so much of it. songs, stripped down, yet still so emotional. LWS was more emotional than the matte finish of Busted Stuff. and the Batson Sessions are more emotional than the glossy finish of Come Tomorrow.

ashame that this band has just never understood how good they could be.

Crazy that they've been sitting on this version of Can't Stop all these years while the slower, bass-driven version was SO maligned throughout the fanbase and that's the one that persisted until 2018. I'd love to hear the story about its evolution/progression, I'm betting the slower one resulted from Fonz messing with the riff and was born out of an impromptu jam that stuck for whatever reason.

Enjoyed some of what I’ve heard while other stuff reminds me of the Stand Up stuff, musically limited and undynamic. I’m good with rough tracks/demos (always have been), so I’m just talking about the music itself...stuff production won’t improve )which it doesn’t always do).

Mostly I don’t hear much of anything as good, let alone better than, what’s on CT. My favorite Break Free is still from the early 2016 tour, with a good pace a nice solo from Boyd.

Glad to hear some stuff, but this isn’t anything like tLWS. Overall it’s better than SU, but that’s still as low a bar as DMB has for my ears.

clip 4, which is at the end, and the cool strumming diddy in the begging of the video (as well as what sounds like 3 notes of Good Good Time) didnt end up on the 2006 sessions
