Re: The Decision: Boyd Leaving DMB

Robert Rabdolph saying he probably won’t be playing with the band this year, whatever that is worth.

I’m with you here. It’d be a big kick in the nuts if they didn’t find a replacement but I’d sadly still go to all of the shows.

If you think that’s awesome then there’s literally nothing you would dislike from this band.

Good. I think we’d get sick of him pretty quickly if he guested at a lot of the shows this summer...

I don't think they should tour without a violin.

I think they WILL tour without a violin.

I really want there to be, and I really hope I'm wrong, but the more time passes with nothing the more I get the feeling that they are just going to wing it without one. We shall see.

Idk... I don't really see what announcing the addition of a violin player no one has heard of does for them other than draw more attention to Boyd's departure, which seems to be a sore spot.

I think either they'll announce it like a week before the first show, or the replacement will just walk out there with them on stage and Dave will introduce him/her to the crowd(s) at some point.

Yea I agree with you, there is no logic to the "they havent said anything, therefore that means they won't have a violin player this summer." Its really just more a foreboding gut feeling I have. I could easily see it going the other way.

Never really thought of the bolded but it definitely seems like the most Dave way to handle this.

If they announce a replacement ahead of time the band also risks a greater probability that more casual fans will hear the news about Boyd not being there and therefore risks more people not attending. I'm sure they'd rather have butts in seats, albeit possibly disappointed that Boyd isn't there, than people finding out ahead of time and deciding not to come.

    Mum's the word.

No announcement does more damage than an announcement. Casual fans are gonna go regardless.

Casual fan not attending because Boyd's not there? That's quite a stretch. I thought the definition of casual was that they don't care that much about such things...more there for a 'good time.' "Oh, dude with the dreads isn't up there tonight? Ok, must be under the weather."

I heard d&t are going to open the shows with a couple songs then slowly others will join.
Most likely carter and Stefan first followed by rr and jeff.
So by the 5th song everyone will be out there and the hope is no one notices bt never came out

I think it'll get out before tour starts if they hired someone. I don't think we will walk into the first show not knowing if there's someone new.

That said, I don't think there will be an official announcement.

    Can’t tell if serious?

Hopefully that’s not the case. Pretty boring way to start a show.

They will announce the new violin player in an aside comment in the middle of the album / single announcement which will happen before the tour starts.

No reason to make a formal announcement now.

Without BT I don't like their chances of continuing with anything close to the old band quality. Unless they get Jimmy from ZBB, this is gonna be real bad. Tim or the horn section are going to get waaaay more work and that is NOT good usually. Shredding and shrill screeching on every fill? Hard pass.

Yeah, this was kind of what I was thinking originally. I’m not saying I want them to tour without a violin, but if they do I think it’d be best to shelve some of the key songs this tour and bust out some songs that 1.) don’t feature much Boyd and 2.) haven’t been played in a while.

But judging off the Night before show, this probably won’t be the case. If they go on without violin, we’ll be hearing/seeing Ants, Graves, Nancies, Warehouse, Pig, Crush, etc and it’s gunna be weird.

Needles me to say, I’m kind of excited about the change, regardless of what personnel lineup they go with. New album, new personnel, new DMB. It’s gunna be a fun year.

I'm only committing to one show this year (my birthday) because I'm fearful of what they might try and add to counteract Boyd's absence
