It's an apt comparison with rounding up undocumented immigrants. I wouldn't see the authorities going into homes and seizing weapons. The owners of such weapons would just be criminals going forward for possessing them. There would be a buy-back period and then after that it would be a secondary crime if found in possession.

No worries on what you said, I have misread things plenty of times myself.

In theory I support a buy back program but in reality the government always bungles it up. They short change the person turning over the weapon often paying out notably less than that person paid for the weapon. They also just plain screw up common sense on them, they pay out say 100 bucks for a handgun or 200 for a rifle and people exploit it by bringing in pistols and rifles that were made like 100 years ago or weapons that will not fire so they are paying for either obsolete or non-functional weapons. If they could get it right I would support it but their success rate is not exactly stellar.

Lastly, we both know there are areas of this nation where the nearest police station is 15 to 30 minutes away (a lifetime if you are being attacked) so you are better off engaging the criminal at 50 yards with a few warning shots than you are waiting for an officer who will arrive to find you already dead and the criminal halfway into the next state.

I know I have a bias but I obey all the applicable laws and do not really understand why I should be penalized for the actions of some random lunatic.

As for someone keeping their rifle past any buyback date becoming a criminal, since the local police forces largely do not have a list of people who own them why would they not just keep them locked up until the bill is repealed or expires like the one in 1994? If the authorities do not know you own one and you do not use it (except in random places in the boondocks) they would have no way to label you a criminal because they do not have the information of who owns what kind of firearms.

Understood on all the counterpoints. There are definitely some logistical elements that would have to be worked through and really, given the current political environment, this is tantamount to a liberal utopian fantasy. But, it was not that long ago that the AWB was in place. You can disagree, but it was arguably effective. Many fewer mass shooting incidents than we are currently experiencing. Just thinking outloud.

Genuinely nice to have a civil debate on such a heated topic, I appreciate it. It is also nice to know that even people whom I generally disagree with on policy can understand my counterpoints. Now if only we could get congress to see reason and reach across the aisles to compromise or at least understand their opponents point of view, maybe that will happen sometime but I am not hopeful of that ever happening because the media on both sides fuels the fire and makes any negotiations even tougher than they should be.

To me a compromise is a deal worked out where neither side is entirely happy with the deal. Would it not make sense for both sides to prioritize their key issues and compromise so they get some of what they want accomplished? We are just so polarized these days it is pathetic. Don't we deserve better representation in DC than we get for the most part from these damn clowns on both sides?
