They were good reads, especially Wizard and Glass, just not very crucial to the overall plot--at least not for the amount of pages they contain.

Wastelands was probably my favorite of the series as well.

It just seemed like a lot of plot threads went nowhere, and while as a whole it was enjoyable, I didn't think it was worth the 4 months or so of reading time I put into it (leisure reading for me is just 30-60 minutes a few nights a week before sleeping).

But to each their own of course.
I will admit to The Dark Tower series not being my favourite part of King's work. Hell, I think Insomnia is the best Dark Tower related story. But my favourite DT book is The Gunslinger. I never cared for the character of Susannah either. So annoying.

The first book I read by King was actually read to me in grade school by my teacher. It was The Eyes of the Dragon. That was in 1991, I believe. The next book I read (on my own) was Pet Semetary, and it remains my favourite King novel. Possibly my favourite novel ever. It is definitely his scariest. The horror really creeps in the story, which starts out quite idyllically.

Well, over the years I have consumed pretty much everything else by King. Some of my favourite books of his include: Pet Semetary, The Eyes of the Dragon, The Dead Zone, Different Seasons, Everything's Eventual, Hearts in Atlantis, Insomnia and Dolores Claiborne. With regards to the film adaptations of his various works: The Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, Secret Window and Stand by Me are probably my favourites. Misery is not bad either, until the end, that is.

For reference, this is a list of all the King/Bachman I have read. The only 2 books missing are: Faithful (his collaboration of the Red Sox's 2004 winning season) and Danse Macabre (his horror genre treatise), both of which I have either not read or finished.

(Plus various short stories, including Premium Harmony, The Reploids, Morality, The Blue Air Compressor, I Was a Teenage Graverobber, Jhonathan & The Witches, The Killer, The King Family and the Wicked Witch, Man with a Belly, The Night of the Tiger, Throttle (w/ Joe Hill), The Crate, Skybar, Slade, Weeds, The Hotel at the End of the Road, I’ve Got to Get Away, The Other Side of the Fog, The Stranger, The Glass Floor, The Cursed Expedition, Never Look Behind You, Before the Play.)

Lastly, in all the interviews I've seen King in, he comes across like an Average Joe. This demeanour seems to show up in his work, too. His characters are mostly people I can relate to, at least in motivation. And finally, in speaking of his work, he is a master at plot pacing and character development. I do find he seems to have difficulty ending longer works though which is why I usually prefer his shorter works; they seem to narrow his focus and leave less to the whims of chance.

A reviewer once called Stephen Edwin King, "The Shakespeare of the 20th Century", and while I believe that sentiment to be over-dramatic at best, there is no denying that he has a lot of more say in his stories than most give him credit for. Aside from his tales covering multiple-genres, his main message, at least to me, seems to be that the monsters, especially those in human form, are only as scary as we believe them to be. They may win the battle but they will ultimately lose the war. As for his purpose for writing, from the dedication page of It (a note to his children): Fiction is the truth inside the lie, and the truth is the magic exists. (Might be a slight paraphrase.)

    That's where I'm at.

i've got about 15 king books on my shelf. read quite a bit of everything's eventual. the only novel i've finished was dreamcatcher. was about 500 pages into the shining two years ago and never picked it back up but i seem to do that quite a bit.

it seems like pet cemetery and salem's lot are the best by you guys. any other good ones that aren't bigger than the bible. time is money.

I'm a huge Dark Tower fan. I'm in the process of rereading the series for around the 5th time (although I've read most of the early books in the series more times than that). I've also read pretty much every book that ties into the DT as well. One of my favorite things to do when I lived in NYC was to sit at 46th and 2nd and read a DT book.

I agree with everything you said. Except the sit at 46th and 2nd part as I have never been to NYC. One of my favorite things about reading a lot of King's books is when a reference to a DT book comes out of nowhere. As I said I am reading Rose Madder and it was great to hear "Wendy Yarrow" talk about seeing heads on poles in the streets of Lud.

Agreed. "It" is wonderful. The character development is perfect. I love the way King develops the story and only gradually reveals details about what happened to the Loser's Club in their initial confrontation with It.

I absolutely love his short stories. Those collections are some of the most enjoyable books I've read. I really like him as a novelist, but those shorter pieces are what come to mind when I think of him.

Y'all think we'll see Dark Tower in film media in King's lifetime, be it movies, tv show, or tv mini-series?

    I really fucking hope so.

His works do not translate well. It would be an all but guaranteed disappointment.

Get a Kindle or other e-reader.

I love mine, no waiting for paperback, no buying books I'll read once and then have to find space for or hassle with selling/donating, no hassling with the library etc.

It's in the works. Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse (co-creators of Lost with JJ Abrams) have the rights.

I don't think it's inherent to his works though. Many of them have just been awfully executed.

It's a matter of choosing the right directer, and/or the right medium/format.

The Stand mini-series was good. I'd like something like that.

7 films would be optimal, but the odds of losing the initial director/screen write and having the subsequent films suck ass are too great.

Every King thread turns into a Dark Tower thread, and for good reason. I wouldn't mind seeing Dark Tower done Avatar Style.

It's tough to ignore the track record. So many have tried, and almost none have succeeded in even coming close to matching the books.

I just think the right people aren't put in charge. King is a master storyteller, and you would think a good story is a good story, whether it be on film or on paper.
