Tell me about your experience with durian when you get back.
2. Take the sky tram to the island of Sentosa and check out the massive Merlion. The island itself is pretty fun and the beach is beautiful.
3. Go to the Night Safari at the zoo.
4. Go to the National Orchid Garden at the botanical garden. It's the biggest in the world. Admission to the botanical garden is free (you just walk right in from the street) but getting in to the orchid garden will cost you $5 SGD.
5. Visit the
Thian Hock Keng Temple, which is a historic Taoist temple in the center of Chinatown.
6. Hunt down the Maxwell Food Center (
hawker center) and go to the stall for Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice.
Try the chicken rice. The stall looks like
this and it's in the center aisle. It's the best in the city and a very signature dish to Singapore. It's near Chinatown so you could tour around Chinatown for some shopping and sights, see the temple and then try the chicken rice.
DO NOT EAT IN RESTAURANTS. The stalls at these hawker centers are cheap and fantastic. The people who cook the food are often experts in the dishes they make. They are licensed (as compared to a regular street vendor) but it still has an open-air market feel.
7. Check out the Raffles hotel and get a Singapore Sling at the Long Bar. They were invented by the bartender there in the early 1900's.
8. There's good shopping at Suntec towers.
9. Take a boat ride to a nearby Indonesian island. If you're going to go to Indonesia, bring $10 USD with you for the visitor visa which must be paid then you dock. If you do not bring USD's, you will have to pay in SGD's and it will cost you $40, which is a complete rip off. Also, make sure your USD bill is crisp.
10. Seriously, get the Hainanese Chicken Rice from Tian Tian's in the Maxwell Food Center. Even if you have to get a cab and make a special trip, it's worth it.
The most fun I had was just in wandering around, checking out Chinatown and Little India and eating all the local food. I also had a blast heading to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia but I don't know if you will have time for that--I took a sleeper train.
