Here, it's just a matter of dropping that section below the floor, so not too complicated, but it's the access I'm more concerned about. We have real hardwood floors upstairs so I'd like to avoid having to tear those up too much if possible.
They should be able to do it from below... I remember him mentioning that as an option also. But that would've been my kitchen and would've been a goddamn mess. Pulling up the floor was easy enough for me... the only thing that sucked was that I had to pull up ALL of it b/c of the way it was laid down. I just numbered everything so I knew where to put the pieces when I put it back together.

New A/C compressor, rear brakes/rotors, tranny fluid flush and some other minor stuff. It's a 2012 Toyota, so I hope to get at least five more years out of it and besides normal maintenance, its the only money I've put into the car.

now i understand why my parents made me throw them some $$$ for car insurance when I was a kid.

My son got his license and we gave him my wifes car (2010 ford edge) and we bought a 2017 edge.
Prior to adding him as a primary driver with his own car, our insurance jumped from $1250 a year to $2950 a year.
Then when we got the 3rd car and added him a primary driver, it jumped up to $3650 a year. ouch.

and the kid is going into his junior year of high school. at least he has a job, straight A student in AP and honor classes, student athlete (captain), and also on a travel team. (and isnt a habitual pot head like many of his friends) Hes going in the right direction.

    Parenting is rough.

    Re: Grown Up Type Stuff

so remember how I told you guys I was going to pay $40 for a maintenance check for my AC unit? LOL, boy do I have a story!

So service experts brings their team out this morning, a supervisor, a lead technician, and then a trainee. they're doing their thing outside, and I'm inside doing a little work from home. About an hour or so later, the supervisor pulls me aside and asks if we can talk for a few minutes (I immediately know something isn't right by his tone).

apparently the trainee was working on something and his screwdriver busted the coil of my AC unit - which of course means the AC unit no longer works. GREAT!

so the supervisor was incredibly nice and apologetic about it, said he hadn't seen anything like that happen before and that they want to do right by me - they offered me essentially 2 options - to replace the coil at no cost and waive the fee for the tune up. so it'd cost me nothing if I decided to go that route.

however, the unit needs replaced - which is something I've known for awhile and have been dreading the time when it comes. I mean it's really old - it's the original inside unit, which is from 1987, and the outdoor unit has been replaced once, back in 2001. so it's definitely time. he said he had a laundry list of items of other things that could go wrong with the unit as well (bad capacitors, dust buildup literally caked onto the blower, etc). I was hoping I'd be able to get away with selling my place before it completely stopped working, but alas.

anyhow, they offered me a pretty darn good deal on a replacement indoor/outdoor unit - I did some calling around and research and there's no way I'd get anywhere close to the price they offered me. so I guess it's sort of a blessing in disguise. he said that the unit will probably pay for itself in that the type of unit I'm getting increases the home value by roughly 5%.

so long story short, I'm having a brand new indoor & outdoor AC unit installed tomorrow morning lol unbelievable.

I know this sounds like I am a bit spoiled - and I am - but I would highly recommend having a house with 2 units. That way if one unit goes down, you still have a portion of the house that is cool, and hence you don't have to pull the trigger on any decisions right away. Of course we had both units go down at the same time a few weeks ago, but that only lasted for a day. Thankfully we had work done before we were in the 100s+ here in Texas.

Makes sense for extreme heat like socal and texas, or for larger houses w/ multiple zones.

Is it dual zone? Or just used as backup like Lee said?

I've never seen/heard of people having multiple units just for backup purposes.

I know it's rich coming from someone who lives in pennsylvania but my upstairs in my old house was so damn hot all the time (spring-summer-early fall); having two zones for climate is like having two new houses b/c you can now actually spend non-sleeping time upstairs comfortably

Was opposite for me in the house I moved out of 2 years ago.

We lived in a raised ranch that was built in the 60's, the thermostat was upstairs in the hallway that ended in the living room that had a picture window that faced west. So when we had the air on it made the upstairs comfortable, but the downstairs was always cold as fuck. Same for when the furnace was on in the winter - it tempered the upstairs beautifully, but the downstairs was an icebox.

A few reasons, if you're interested...

1.) Just happened to see this job via LinkedIn and it works from a career progression as well as logistics standpoint. Right now I live in Chicago but commute to a north suburb (about ab hour commute) and this job would be in Chciago.

2.) My company was supposed to merge with another company and then the group the bought Staples tried to buy us, so I'm not even sure what the future of my company is at this point.

The next two are eye-roll inducing but, regardless, it's really how I feel.

3.) Our SVP is just so behind the times in analytics and processing. His first instinct is to create lists and manually spread out the work to resolve issues whereas I think that's ridiculous and it gets old day after day. In addition, he does not promote people from within his group. He hasn't promoted someone in over 12 years. Any times soneone has left the company, he has filled it from the outside.

4.) Probably due to a lot of the above, our directors are prety dumb. I was on a call yesterday where an outside consultant was basically mocking one of our directors and I don't think the guy even understood it. When a consultant says to a director "I'm explaining inventory management 101A", that's not a good sign. And, that director is like three levels above me. It's almost one of those, you woulndn't believe it unless you saw it but it seems we all have similar stories.

I guess I'd also like to see if I'm worth as much as I think I'm worth, which I think is more than I'm now getting.

Thanks. I uploaded a couple of pdf examples of interactive dashboards I've created but it's hard to get the full effect in pdf format.

I've heard that line of thinking a lot, but how is spending $2600 worse than spending $20k or $30k for a new car? No guarantee that the new car won't need maintenance too. I've been driving the same car for 11 years and I've had a couple of expensive repairs every now and then. However, I figure on average over the 11 years I've probably only spent maybe $500 a year to maintain the car (regular oil changes, new tires (twice), new brakes, new water pump, etc.). I haven't had a car payment in 8.5 years. To buy a new (used) car I'd have to spend like $30k to get a more current version of what I already have and I would probably have a $300+ per month car payment, which is almost as much as I pay per year with my current car. Plus, the state registration fees for old cars is super cheap and insurance is cheap too.

If you like your car, no reason to get a new one. My car is 7 year old, and I have no desire to replace it. That said, if I had to pay $2600 for something, that might be the sign its time to get a new one.

It really just depends on how reliable you feel the rest of the car will be and for how long. If you think that after putting in $2600, you’re good, then by all means. However, if other things are on the verge of going wrong, it could be money down the drain.

Yea, literally just put $2400 into my car. But I'm confident I can get another 80-100k miles out of it. It was a no brainer.

If it was older, and I thought it was just the beginning, I would have had to think more about Old Yeller'ing it.

Wouldnt be surprised if that was all a ruse to get you to buy inside/outside unit in the first place. There was a contractor here in Dallas that would send an anonymous henchman to remove some particular piece from a unit which caused it to leak refrigerant. The contractor would then come to the home or business and tell them they need an entire new system because of the R22 to R410 switch. This went on for a while too.

I guess I mean even if you had a to buy a whole new engine for $10k or whatever, that's still way cheaper than buying a new car. It seems like the only time thinking a repair is money down the drain is if you assume the car has resale value. But unless you no longer need a car, then resale value doesn't matter at all because if you sell it, you'll still need to buy another, (likely) more expensive car that will cost a lot more than the repair. What am I missing?
