Why does watchtower get so much hate around here? Personally I think it's a killer song. The energy is through the roof.

    its not hated.

its just completely stale as a closer. they often don't move it around anymore.

I don't hate it as a closer, but like Two Step was a for a couple years, it's grown stale in its slot.

It would benefit greatly from a treatment similar to what Two Step has received this year; moving around in the set a lot.

i don't buy into watchtower opening a show as a good idea, like some have suggested they should do. i think even more so than ants, or billies, it'd be far too anti climatic opening a show.

I agree that AATW should be played midset more, but it's not like it's a new development that it's closing sets and encores. It's been one of their primary closers since the beginning.

Watchtower opener does not sound good to me. To be honest I'm pretty much just tired of it in general. Works great as a closer because it means I can leave and beat some traffic

Seriously though I could never hear AATW again, at a show or just in general, and be perfectly ok with it

I've gotten Watchtower 4 times - and it was the encore closer each time.

    8/8/07, 4/15/09, 7/24/09, and 12/8/12.

I like the song, but I don't need to hear it ever again.

I've heard it 6 times, twice midset, which I thought was cool. It wasn't predictable that way.

The mid set watchtower at alpine in 12 was one of my favorite surprises at a show. That was the first time i saw it not close a set

Granny was the set closer last show. There's some variety...it hasn't been a set closer since '93! I love when the band goes out of its comfort zone and changes things up. Hopefully we see some more unique closers going forward (i.e. The Best of What's Around, So Right, Drive In Drive Out, Crush, The Stone, etc.).

Stay to open would be money. Danceable, catchy, gets everyone moving, really high energy

I saw Stay open at Darien in 03 I think - it was a great way to start the show. I went to Blossum the next night, and it closed the set.

Watchtower is a great song. Agree it is somewhat stale as an encore closer. Would love it midset. Never want to see it go away for too long.

Always have wondered.... if Dave/DMB had penned this song, where would it rank on the overall list of DMB songs. Would maybe be right up there in my top 5.

    Seen Watchtower 10 times.

7 times in the encore, 2 times main set closer.

5/23/14 was the only time it wasn't a closer/encore, it was song 17 of 23.

I'm definitely scaling back next year. I'll go to whatever D&T is close by, but full band - probably only going to an N1/N2 somewhere and that's it.
