Posted this in another thread, figured it's be helpful here too:

You're probably going to get a wide range of responses (especially pizza). This is a good thing! Because Chicago is, in my opinion, the best restaurant city in America right now. And that opinion is shared by many. Check it out:

"Sorry, Los Angeles, but this is the best restaurant city in America right now. You may think it’s all steakhouses and encased meats here, but there’s a reason the James Beard Foundation moved its awards show to Chicago in 2015: The city’s chefs are some of the nation’s most creative and their restaurants are downright satisfying..."

Taken from this (which you should read):

https://www.cntraveler.com/gallery/b...nts-in-chicago

These are mostly more hip/new restaurants, and there are a lot of classic Chicago places you'll probably want to stop by.

That said, here are a couple of my choices:

1) Au Cheval. Burger joint. Think upscale, hipster diner. This place has become a little divisive among us Chicago locals, as places tend to be after they get popular. Three or four years ago? Everyone LOVED it. But just like music acts, once it's "mainstream", people try to find their love elsewhere. In my opinion, it's still one of the best burgers I've ever had. And the cocktails are to die for (my favorite old fashioned in the city). The lines here get ridiculous, but the good news is that you just give them your cell phone number and they'll text you when your table is ready. I'd recommend getting there around 5:30-5:45 when the wait is probably about an hour, put your phone number in and walk next door to Lone Wolf (one of my favorite bars) and grab a couple beers. Three Floyds is on tap there and you can generally get Zombie Dust on draft. Some reviews on Au Cheval if you don't believe the hype:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/videos/au...burger-0241657
http://www.foodnetwork.com/shows/top...-5-restaurants
http://www.businessinsider.com/revie...ve-ever-had-21

2) Pequod's Pizza. Like I said, you'll get a wide range of opinions on pizza, but this place is a lot more "local" than places like Lou's or Giordano's. And the pizza is just fantastic. If you want a less "Chicago style" pizza (whether thin or deep dish), check out Piece Pizza in Wicker Park.

3) Publican. God damnit is this place good. Make a reservation in advance. Google it if you want some insight, but it's mostly a small plate/sharing type place. It can get a little pricey, but it's delicious.

4) Lula Cafe for brunch.

5) Parson's Chicken and Fish.

Obligatory mention of a beef (extra dipped) at Portillos.

Would love to get some recommendations for restaurants, site seeing/hiking in and around Denver. Heading out there for a long weekend next month on business but decided to extend my stay catch up with an old friend and also see the Liam Gallagher show in Englewood. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I wish I saw your post earlier. Hope you're still in the country though, I myself returned from Greece just a couple of weeks ago and the memories are still fresh. My personal favorite spots would be Kerameikos Cemetery (the atmosphere is fantastic) and Pnyx Hill to enjoy great looks on the city. Think you've had time to do major sights because they totally deserve it too. Greece is fabulous in all the ways. We did a short tour to islands and Santorini took my heart. I really started thinking of moving there, the prices are not crazy there and many houses are a thing of beauty https://tranio.com/greece/adt/1311889/ But guess it's just me who's a sucker for such things, my other half was not so impressed

They do. In my own experience, I didn't save any cash using it. Cabs are relatively cheap there.

Yes or No, would you travel to Burma this week? So torn. I can understand both sides of the argument.

For sure. Maybe avoid the north though.

    Food for thought...
“Large parts of the country now rely on tourism to a very great degree. In the past, much of the tourist infrastructure was owned by the government and there was a compelling argument that a tourist embargo would help avoid giving money to the government and therefore help bring about change.

“However, this is no longer the case; the vast majority of hotels and restaurants are now privately owned, and employ local people. Guides are self-employed or work for privately owned tourist enterprises. Drivers again mostly work for privately owned tourist enterprises. Taxi drivers, porters, waiters, souvenir sellers, ticket vendors, hawkers, craftsmen and many more derive all of their income from tourists and would find their livelihood very adversely affected if the tourists stop coming. It is our opinion that avoiding travel to Burma will have little impact on the government and the military but a more profound impact on local people.”

Thanks for the response. While I typically agree with that sentiment, I feel this is a bit different. In this case the local people I would like to support, also agree with the genocide. For what it's worth, my plan is still to go there this Monday. Just having a harder time than usual making it a reality.

First time I've ever felt that not having a plan has really bit me in the ass. Been stuck in a little border town in Thailand waiting on my Burma visa. First day walking around here was fine, extremely diverse due to large number of Burmese refugees. Day 3 though and getting a bit bored/anxious because I only have a limited amount of time in Myanmar. No one but myself to blame for not making a decision weeks ago. Would've happily spent a night here and moved along. Fingers crossed I can leave at the crack of dawn tomorrow.

I really enjoyed this place called "Ivo a Trastevere" in the Trastevere neighborhood. Small, unfussy locals kind of place. That whole neighborhood is really cool to walk around in.

Easyjet is fine. Just look at skyscanner.com for cheapest fares. If you have some time and want to get a bit adventurous, Europe is extremely well connected by train. Seat61.com is the holy grail of train travel info throughout the entire world. Language barrier will be no issue in Western Europe.

Been in Burma nearly a week now and have never been anywhere like it. Vastly different from its neighboring Thailand. Friendliest, most welcoming and thankful people I've ever encountered. A local person in Thailand comes up to you and you maybe put a small guard up, what are they trying to sell me here or how am I going to be scammed. People come up to you here and just want to talk and meet you. Haven't been pushed to buy anything at all. Only negative that sticks out to me is the mass amount of litter. Hard to fault them as they have more pressing issues than finding a trash can, but they just throw shit anywhere and everywhere. Have about 12 more days here and will post a more extensive recap of it and some pics. Definitely glad I came here though, it's been quite the positive experience so far.

thanks for the input. i'd love to do the train, but this trip is kinda clusterfuck because of events i have tickets for. the original intent of this trip was to do UK/Ireland to knock the island out of the way for when I return to do a train trip across europe. but, metallica added shows in germany while i'm there and london is certainly closer to germany than nyc is. couldn't pass it up. so timing is the factor. i think i'm going to bookend my trip with london and then fly RT london/germany

No problem. Its easy and comfortable for sure, but let me digress that its coined as a Low Cost Carrier. Picking your seat or checking your bag will be a fee.If you are traveling a popular route chances are they will be asking for volunteers to check their bags however.

If you think though its going to be like Spirit Airlines - its worlds above that.

Good site for flights in EU and Asia: momondo.com

Regular trains are akin to Amtrak service at the best and in a lot of cases offer lower commuter rail style service and quality.

High speed trains are on dedicated tracks so timing is impeccable. They are flagship services for the countries rail systems so its the newest equipment and more luxurious of a trip.

But the cost is never outrageous, I would always do High speed rail if its an option of the two.

Anyone ever did any traveling inside Central America? I've always just gone direct from ORD, DFW or connected in IAH. I'm thinking about spending about 10 days in Belize, Costa Rica and Panama. What's the best way to get between countries? Drive?

I have been to Panama, Belize, Costa Rica and El Salvador. Best bet is to fly, next driving. Buses take forever.

Your point of entry will most likely be PTY or SAL - then Air Panama or Avianca/TACA will get you most places. I think JetBlue has started flying certain places there too.

One of my favorite areas, enjoy.

Seems like too many countries for 10 days. I’d cut at least one country out. Costa Rica is beautiful but really expensive. If I went back I’d go somewhere else. Nicaragua maybe. Dido knows the most about that area, he can probably give more help.

I’ve got no advice other than obvious areas. Just wanted to say that I’ve never done scuba but it’s on my list. But more than marine life I kinda want to dive to see a shipwreck or buried ruins.

Trying to plan a road trip for either this summer or the summer after. Main goal is to hit up the Grand Canyon and making stops along the way. Any suggestions for extended road trips? Any landmarks I should include? I am traveling from the Williamsburg, VA area and heading west. Probably will try to stop in St Louis or Nashville along the way too. Thinking a rental car may be the best bet.

I got certified earlier this year and it is the best decision I have made in a long time. It will be a lifelong hobby for me because I absolutely love it. I kept putting it off for like 15 years and now I can't believe how much time I have wasted not being certified. My advice is don't wait! It is worth it.

Also, I got to do a wreck dive in Bali. It was awesome!

I’ve finally started planning my two week Christmas holiday to Morocco. Granada to Cadiz for a night. Thought about Gibraltar but I might pass. Then to Algeciras to catch a 45 minute ferry to tangiers. From there to chefchaouen for a few days. Then to fez and Essaouira before coming back. Very excited! Anyone ever been?

He only advice I can give is within Arizona. Not sure your route in az but if you will be driving between Phoenix and flagstaff on your way to or from the Grand Canyon but if you are then you should really take highway 89a between Sedona and flagstaff. Beter even if it is going down from flagstaff down to Phoenix. Beautiful little side road from highway 17. Worth it.

Don’t tell me that man. I’ve been thinking about it for so long. But when I’ve been travelling it always seems expensive and I end up not doing it. But I’m getting the itch. Advice noted, next time I get a chance I’ll try to make it happen.
