    Re: PlayStation Vue

I had PS Vue when I lived in an apartment from April 2016-April 2017. I liked it well enough, but there were three main issues I identified:

    1. Slow start-up time. Best part about having cable again is being able to watch TV instantaneously. Had to start up the PS4 or Firestick, get to the app, have the app load...about a minute or so every time. Sucks if you're rushing to turn on a show or game and you're sitting there waiting for it to buffer.

    2. Navigating through the guide is a bit of a pain. Not being able to hit the channel number was inconvenient; instead you have to scroll through the guide and find the channel you want.

    3. Buffering. Might have been due to my Internet (actually had the boost or whatever and it still did this), but during high-traffic times (5-9 at night, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on weekends) it would lag/buffer a good amount. Also, just in general, you're about a minute behind actual live cable TV, so for sports games you're going to want to stay off social media.

It did have some benefits; it's a little bit cheaper than cable in my area, and it has free unlimited cloud-based DVR. It's not bad for a short-term solution if you're trying to cut costs, but I'm much happier with cable. Might be a little more expensive but I think justifiably so.

god damit. that's not what i want to hear.

i'm happy with xfinity's service. but they constantly fuck me with billing and i have to call them so they can say "oh, geez. yeah, our mistake, glad you called so we could fix it!"

    fucking dishonest and bullshit.

but i'll probably stick with them because i have no other viable options....

As stupid as it is, one of my huge issues with sports streaming is that tiny lag that puts you a minute or so behind that Steng mentioned. I'm always on my phone for a "second screen" experience with twitter, fantasy, etc. when watching baseball and football and end up getting spoiled on things. I know the easy solution is to stop using my phone while watching but that's far too engrained in my behavior to start doing that now.

    I've been loving Vue.

I haven't had any issues with buffering. I updated my internet speed when I cut cable, and still came out on top in terms of saving money. But yeah, if you don't have fast internet, it's not for you.

How many local channels depends on where you are. They have Fox Sports Midwest for baseball games for me. They have Fox and CBS as well, but not NBC or ABC in my area yet. But a digital antenna takes care of those easily enough.

Now, I have found during college football season, that surfing between games is not nearly as easy as it used to be. But now that I have two young kids a bit less of my Saturdays are spent just sitting around flipping back and forth between 4-5 college games anyways, so it's not a dealbreaker for me.

Oh, also, just beware that you are using up Internet when you just have it on in the background. My wife and I often watch TV as we fall asleep in our bedroom, and we just set the sleep timer. Well, the first month we had Vue instead of cable, we set the sleep timer on the TV, and the TV would shut off but the Roku would just continue streaming live TV on Vue for 24 hours a day, every day. We were so used to TV that we just weren't thinking about it, and in like a week we got an email saying we had used up our entire data plan for our house, something that I had never even thought about being a possibility.

We ended up buying some special smart outlet that shuts off all other devices when the TV shuts off, and we haven't had any issues since, but just something to think about.

I am moving and looking to go this route as well.

Looks to be about 50 bucks cheaper than going the "triple" play route. Moving out west so need the B1G network.

The delay will suck but I will just have to stay off twitter.

nothing better than cutting the cord and saving 175 bucks a month

then signing up for 8 different providers to replicate what you had for a cost of 170 bucks a month

yeah, i mean, that's basically what i'm looking at. and it's not like they didn't price this shit accordingly. they know.

but really, i'd probably save about $50 a month.

    not worth the hassle.

My initial savings was around the $60-70 a month range, but yeah, it seems like it's going in that direction, as more and more providers break out on their own. Talk of a Disney streaming service, ESPN streaming service, in a few years most people will be right back to where they started price-wise and just left with a more inconvenient viewing experience with everything split up.

i'm pretty sure this is what steve jobs had in mind for apple tv.

he tried to work out a piece meal subscription with all the channels but was shut down by the cable companies over bidding.

ironic how his vision is the way that it seems to be moving...

i'd be cool with paying for channels for the month i want to see them based on their programming. that would also bring better programming year round. hell, that could redesign how series' "seasons" are made. there might not be any "seasons" at all and just be continuous new episodes.
