It's not bad. I like it best when it reminds me of Tool or Opeth, but I just can't get into LaBrie's vocals.

I respect Mangini as an educator and as a performer, but I hate his drumming on this. And most of his work in DT. There’s a version of Finally Free out there that’s almost unlistenable due to his polyrhythms for polyrhythms sake.

I certainly get that. I’ve been a fan since I first heard them on the radio back in 92. I’m just amazed that they continue to push themselves with each album.

I like what he’s doing here… sounds like he’s finally completely unleashed. The first few albums he was definitely handcuffed. They loosened that a bit on the last album and here it’s just whoa. Now, I hope the entire album isn’t like this but I definitely enjoy it for a handful of songs.

I saw this sentiment in the comment section too. I would've thought they would give Portnoy's replacement free reign to go wild, since he's got massive shoes to fill.

Portnoy was in control of everything that band did. I’m not sure they knew exactly what they wanted to do after he left. Except to get someone capable of playing Portnoy’s drum parts while also keeping the integrity of the ‘DT sound’. For a band that seems adventurous they also play it rather safe when it comes to their sound. They have an extremely loyal (and critical) fanbase. They don’t want to fuck that up. I wish the band that this site was dedicated to was more like that!

Zakk Wylde fuckin rips. I was really surprised by how good they were live when I saw them in 2019. Had it not been at a festival with Slayer starting on another stage I would've been all over their set. Unfortunately only got to stay for about 40 minutes of theres.

Caught Prong, Obituary and Black Label Society last night. Got to meet Zakk and had the band sign one of my guitars. BLS is a bunch of really cool dudes. Obituary was solid. Didn’t catch a lot of Prong’s set but did get Snap Your Fingers Snap Your Neck. That song kicks ass.

In the mid 2000's a band I was in got to open a show for Prong. We had the opening "local band gets to play for the bartender and maybe ten other people" spot right after the doors opened and before the touring bands sets. It was tons of fun.

I just got into this band called We Butter The Bread With Butter. Their lyrics are German, and stupid (seriously, they sing about really stupid shit on purpose), and they're goofballs... but holy shit are they heavy.

We Butter The Bread With Butter's new album, Das Album, straight from their YouTube page. This album is fucking glorious, and the lyrics are funny as hell. But regardless, it's fucking brutal at times, and the breakdowns are fucking incredible.

Vulgar Display of Power was released 30 years ago today. One of my all time favorites. Still nothing quite like it. 1992 was such a great year for music.

Really helped shape my interest in heavy music when it was released. I listened to the CD so many times I wore it out and had to get it again.

Exactly the same for me! Actually, I think I’ve bought that CD at least 4 times.

The music scene at that time was wild. You had 80’s metal going out, grunge coming in and Pantera comes in and smashes everyone in the face with power groove metal or whatever you want to call it.
