Re: **Official Running Thread**

I signed up for a half once with a buddy in the Marin Headlands in SF. I didn't really look into the terrain. He told me I wouldn't be able to finish in under 2 hours. I was figuring 1:45 or less. It was a fucking mountain. Single track in spots, I'd be running downhill at a 5:45 clip and then uphill at a 10:00 clip. Hills that were too steep to run up. Ended up finishing in 2:15ish. It was a ton of fun.

Anyone watching what Shalane Flannigan is doing? Daunting and impressive to say the least.

FYI for Apple Watch users - the Workout app can now call out your mileage and pace during runs.

Was a feature that was missing (still don’t think you can customize it, it’s every 1 mile as default) vs other fitness tracking apps.

Should note that it only came through after I did the iOS 15 update and then the watchOS 8.0 update.

But it’s nice to finally have it

Eh, I suppose so, I'm not seeing how it's overly incredible or anything to be honest and I'm a big Shalane fan.

She’s running 5 marathons in 6 weeks and finishing faster than a lot of the eletes.

there are people who ran the Chicago Marathon yesterday that are running the Boston Marathon today. Insane.

Anyone in New England watching on WBZ TV in Boston? There's a commentator that sounds like Tom Bergeron, the old host of Dancing with the Stars and he got his start on WBZ TV in Boston, but it can't be him, could it?

I just started running this year and I have such a newfound respect for marathon runners. Running a mere 5k makes me feel like I'm touching death.

My wife's track club does a "beer mile" run once a year where you run the track 4 times in a circle but you have to chug a beer after each lap. Was good the 3rd time around but was sucking air towards the end. That's why I like skiing or biking better.

    Gut check time:

I'm in the middle of my last hard cycle for marathon training (completed weeks of 58, 60, 56 miles, still got 65 and 57 weeks to go). Yesterday was an 18 miler with 14 at marathon pace. I was able to do 13 at about 3-4 seconds faster than marathon pace and then the last was about 25 seconds slower. I was pretty tired at the end. No way I could do another 12 at that pace. The weather was pretty bad, 70, windy and some rain. The course I ran is pretty hard with some hills. Legs obviously tired from being in the middle of the cycle.

So the question is...if I struggled to finish the 14 can I really run the full 26 at my goal pace or is my fitness not there? My legs will be fresher. Weather should be better. Course should be easier. I don't want to bonk but I also want to get a good time.

First off running a first marathon with a time goal is a tough challenge as you can't replicate how you'll be in the last 10k and won't have the prior experience, if I was in your spot I'd plan to pace the first 20 miles so that you can hopefully negative split. I'd advise against sticking to an aggressive pace you aren't sure you can realistically keep and seeing what happens, when you overdo it early in a marathon the world becomes a dark cruel place haha.

Ran my first marathon yesterday. This is exactly what happened to me. Miles 22-26.2 were very painful to get through because I tried to keep a pace that was not realistic for me to maintain for all 26. Was still an amazing experience but I ended up missing my time goal by a few minutes and the last few miles (and post-race) were a big time struggle.

I hear that. I totaled my bike this year, which is why I picked up running.

Beer Mile sounds like hell. Way to take an enjoyable thing and make it work against you.

Or you could just not drink and run at the same time.

i agree with what toy said
the marathon is really like two races. the first 20 miles and then the last 6 miles

the biggest and most common mistake runners make is going off to fast. when you get to the last 10k (and especially the last 5k), that's the time to get after it.

also, running negative splits is just a really really fun time

I was thinking about it tonight. I might just run by heart rate. I've trained that way so why not run that way?

    I was thinking:

    First 6: under 149
    Next 10: 149-155
    Final 10: 155-????

I've got a 20 miler on Saturday so I'm gonna keep a closer eye on my heart rate.

that could be a good approach! HR and athletic performance varies so much for every individual so I’m not sure what a good target number would be. personally I could never use HR for my racing strategy because I know that my watch is often off. (although, looking at the data after the race can be helpful). i also wonder how it would be impacted by adrenaline

Ran for 2 hours today. Made it 13.64 miles for pace of 8:48. I think that’s the longest time & distance I’ve ever done. Still had some juice left at the end as well. Probably my last long run before 1/2 on the 31st.

at what distance do you find that you’ll want to fuel up during your run? I’m thinking of starting to run some longer distances and am just curious.
