Dr Dre as a solo artist? should never get in.

Considering basically nobody outside of the U.S know any DMB songs, the answer for first ballad is an absolute no.

He doesn't write him own lyrics and is just not a good rapper. There really is no such thing as a good Dr Dre solo song.

    Producer? Yes 1000%

I bet solo Dr. Dre gets in before DMB does.

Good points, I guess I think of him in totality. No good Dre solo songs? That makes me sad how true that is.

I seem to remember reading somewhere Jay-Z was the lyrical ghost-writer on The Chronic and 2001.

I know he wrote Still Dre but I think that was it. Wouldn't surprise me if it was more.

The D.O.C and RBX wrote alot of lyrics for The Chronic, I don't think Jay-Z was involved there. I think Dre usually gives credit to his lyric writers, so its not exactly ghostwriting.

oh yeah. Def not the Chronic..I think jay was still hustling records for Jaz-O on some Originators/Hawaiian Sophie shit in 1993.

I remember Big L being on hot 97 in like 94-95 to do a freestyle and asking if "his man" jay-z can also get on the freestyle and the radio host was pretty much like ahh yeah I guess that is okay...and look at Jay Z now lol

Re: Will the Dave Matthews Band make the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame in 2018?

Here I see what Mike Gordon said in a recent interview about the hof...
JamBase: Have you given much thought to Phish getting into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame?

MG: Not a lot of thought, it was talked about years ago by people in our organization about how there are rules, like it has to be 25 years since your first album release. It would be nice but there are bands … I mean last time I checked Yes wasn’t inducted …

JamBase: They actually were just inducted.

MG: Well, case in point, because last time I checked was a couple of years ago. I grew up listening to them, one of the many, but they should certainly get in there before we get in there. It would be nice, but it’s not too much of a thought. I’m very thankful and proud of the stuff that goes on with Phish, but if something happened with my solo career that was … it wouldn’t be the hall of fame … but something … I like it when I know I’ve been able to make a splash in that world, so I just focus and fantasize about those type of things more.

I feel like Phish is already breaking new ground. I don’t know, maybe the Baker’s Dozen is more important than the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in a way.

    Yeah
Basically I think he was saying, no - he has not really thought about it and there bands that deserve to be in/in before Phish.
Of course the one he mentions is now in

They do alright in Europe... and considering you're in New Zealand I'd say they are world wide.... maybe not on the level of U2, but world wide.

What should be more shocking is Gravedigger won while other nominations the band got didn't

Dave's solo win shocked me even more than the bands.

Alright is not Hall of fame level. Also, I lived in the U.S for 13 years, I'd have never heard of them probably if not for living there

I think they should be, but they'll be up against Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Dr. Dre, Nine Inch Nails and Janet Jackson, plus a bunch of older bands that haven't made it in yet. It might take a year or two for the crowded field to die down.

This is something I'm curious about in about 10-20 years. Who are they going to be inducting? There are no real "rock" bands coming out anymore that are making legendary status anymore. I mean is it going to be people like Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars?

At this point it's becoming the Popular Music Hall of Fame, so yeah, probably. Sheeran's not at HOF level yet but Bruno probably is, or at least he's very close.

Pretty dumb not to considering their numbers and some of the others that have been accepted.

Re: Will the Dave Matthews Band make the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame in 2018?

Im reading the Black Sabbath biography so it's got me thinking a lot about this so...

But it's interesting to see how the music landscape has shifted since the 60s. In today's world it's really hard for me to comprehend that metal (for this sake I'll group in hair metal acts like Bon Jovi, Def Lepaprd, etc. into this category) ruled in the 1980s. And even into the 90s, metal and hard rock were very much mainstream.

Since the 2000s or even almost since boy bands got massive in the late 90s there's been such a shift away from the classic band that used to dominate. It's really difficult for me to even think of a rock band (actual rock band not Mumford & Sons or any other nonsense like that) that has really hit it big since the early 2000s.

But all things are cyclical so I can't help but wonder if we'll see a rock renaissance in 10-20 years.

Re: Will the Dave Matthews Band make the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame in 2018?

Biggest rock bands that have released their first album in the past decade:

    Alabama Shakes (2012)
    Alt-J (2012)
    Bon Iver (2007)
    Fleet Foxes (2008)
    Imagine Dragons (2012)
    Mumford & Sons (2009)
    Tame Impala (2010)
    Vampire Weekend (2008)
    The xx (2009)

I'd say Imagine Dragons is the biggest name in that group. Woof.

Edit: I guess you could include Adele (2008), but I think she's more pop than rock. She is a massive effing star, though, and could be a future inductee if her career stays at this level.

    The xx (2009)

I'd say Imagine Dragons is the biggest name in that group. Woof.

Edit: I guess you could include Adele (2008), but I think she's more pop than rock. She is a massive effing star, though, and could be a future inductee if her career stays at this level.
I'd classify a few of those as folk bands and not rock bands. If I was seeing Fleet Foxes live, I definitely wouldn't say I was going to a "rock concert."

There have been a few decent mainstream rock bands/artists that have debuted fairly recently (Hozier, James Bay, etc.), but your overall point does hold true.

But to me none of those are anywhere near "Legends" status. Mumford is a one-hit wonder that has for some reason hung around (IMO), Imagine Dragons is getting bigger and has potential to be a big rock band but are nowhere close yet, The xx feel almost too indy to be considered iconic and the others aren't any bigger .

My point is the days of real rock bands dominating the airwaves are in the past. There are no more Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pearl Jam caliber bands out there at the moment. It's just not what sells today.

Like I said, everything is seasonal. I think rock artists will make a comeback at some point.

From a pure newer "Rock" band standpoint, I think you could say Queens of the Stone Age will probably get in at some point but not their first year (which is still 5+ years away I think) and not the headliner of the group. Mastodon maybe at some point too if they keep putting out relevant albums. Metal and Hard Rock are by and large a young mans games though, you dont see alot of bands continue into their 40s and 50s in rock genres. Its why most of those mega star 80's bands are unlikely to get in, although they were hugely popular it didnt last long, many broke up and then reformed to do the nostalgia circuit.
