I've watched a decent bear video about the behavior of bears, what kind of body language they show in different situations, how to tell if a charge is real or a bluff etc. It was really interesting, but I don't know if I'd have the presence of mind to carefully decide what was on the bear's mind as it charged my ass. Hopefully don't have to find out. Like you guys have said, every encounter I've had was - ok, you go that way, i'll go this way, thanks for not eating me.
Where I grew up, we had a lot of wildlife on our property -once, a bear chasing our horse - it would back it into a corner of the fence, then the horse would turn and charge at the bear, repeat. I missed it,but I got home from school, hopped off the bus, and there was a bear in a trap in the yard. It was a protected species (white black bear) so we couldn't shoot it even if we'd wanted to, unless it attacked a person. It was being a real pest, trying to get into neighbours' houses because it smelled food etc, chasing the horse. The wildlife guys came with a trap and hauled it off into the woods somewhere.
yeah, i grew up in the sticks.

http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/dmswww/Libr...2777_part7.wmv <--- This is the video i think. Long, but good. Bunch of biologists putting themselves in actual bear situations and taping the results, for your learning pleasure.
