Anyone headed to Utah this year?

We're planning a family trip out to Goblin Valley, which is perhaps one of the coolest places I've ever seen.
    http://www.utah.com/stateparks/goblin_valley.htm

Since my dad and kid brother (12) have never been we'll probably swing by Arches, but the bulk of the trip will be in GV state park with maybe a run down the Green River.

Are you worried about safety at all? I've heard a lot of stories about "incidents' on the AT and while it's definitely a must for me before I die, it's in the back of my head.

Sounds like you've been planning your ass off. Be safe!

In the brand new updated data book for 2009 it states there are about 2 incidents on the trail every decade. The only reason people know about them is because they are so rare that when they happen, the media gets all over it and its a huge deal. It's more dangerous for me to fill up my car with gas in the middle of the day in a big city. But I have been taking the necessary precautions and will make sure to keep my wits about me.

I'm leaving when most people leave for their thru-hikes, so there should be a good amount of people on the trail.. and have been planning like crazy. I'm more worried about bears in GA, and just keeping supplied food-wise when out in the smokies.

What do you carry for bears? I've had a lot of encounters in W. Canada, but never a really close call. I carry bear spray, but that's kind of more to make me feel better than something I think would actually work that great. I usually rely on hanging food, clean camp, and being noisy.

ha, last summer for in Alaska, I was getting dropped by a helicopter for an hour of work away from camp. The pilot found a nice landing pad and started to put down when I saw four black bears, a mom and three cubs, essentially right where I was going to be dropped. They ran a few feet away then stopped to watch. Needless to say, I didn't bother working there that day.

I've never carried bear spray, I don't want to falsely depend on it. You're supposed to just back away and try to make yourself appear bigger ie/stand on top of a large rock or hill or stand on the back of another person if you have to, with your arms spread out real wide. And making alot of noise when you're on the trails, most bears will stay away from that alone.

I hear Arches is amazing. It's on my to see list!

Hahah that sounds like quite a sight!

Honestly though, for the section i'm hiking, what you said was right..hang your food, eat away from your tent, dont sneak up on a bear, dont get between her and her cubs. I also read that Black bears will do a "fake-charge" and come at you but not attack you. And if you're attacked by one you're supposed to fight for all youre worth, but that's the last resort. Most of the time when you see a bear they'll run away or look at you like, "wat."

    As for grizzlies...you're fucked. hahahah

That's been my experience with them. I haven't encountered them camping (and I fully agree with hanging your food, eating away from the tent, etc...), but when we got them at my house growing up they had that "wut?" look on their face before they went back to whatever they were doing.

gee thanks justin, as i'm heading into grizzly land soon.

I'm honestly more worried about other tourists rather than wildlife. And maybe a supervolcano or two.

Haha, exactly. Don't get me wrong, I'll shit myself scared if I see one, but I'm gonna try my best to be smart about it.

hahahahah. I'm no grizzly expert, but I just dont see any chance of survival if you run into a creature who's hands are bigger than your head and chest, and who can run faster than you. I dont know if I respect any animal more than a grizzly...and I've only seen one from afar. Thank God.

I respect it because it could absolutely dominate me.

I've watched a decent bear video about the behavior of bears, what kind of body language they show in different situations, how to tell if a charge is real or a bluff etc. It was really interesting, but I don't know if I'd have the presence of mind to carefully decide what was on the bear's mind as it charged my ass. Hopefully don't have to find out. Like you guys have said, every encounter I've had was - ok, you go that way, i'll go this way, thanks for not eating me.

Where I grew up, we had a lot of wildlife on our property -once, a bear chasing our horse - it would back it into a corner of the fence, then the horse would turn and charge at the bear, repeat. I missed it,but I got home from school, hopped off the bus, and there was a bear in a trap in the yard. It was a protected species (white black bear) so we couldn't shoot it even if we'd wanted to, unless it attacked a person. It was being a real pest, trying to get into neighbours' houses because it smelled food etc, chasing the horse. The wildlife guys came with a trap and hauled it off into the woods somewhere.
yeah, i grew up in the sticks.

edit: http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/dmswww/Libr...2777_part7.wmv <--- This is the video i think. Long, but good. Bunch of biologists putting themselves in actual bear situations and taping the results, for your learning pleasure.

yeah, i grew up in the sticks.

Our town had a 3 strikes ordinance. Once the bear was reported in city limits 3 times it would put down.

They shouldn't have mentioned that last part because no one wanted to be responsible for a dead bear, so it became a problem after a while.

Growing up in the sticks, ftw

Finished my basic scuba training last thursday. Now I need to wait until it warms up to dive out in the lakes to finish the certification. It's gonna be a long three months.

Alright well tonight I got to go to the Banff Mountain Film Festival which stopped at my school. Basically its the best amateur outdoors/extreme movies of the past year on a world tour. The one that opened tonight was only 6 minutes and I thought maybe some of you guys would like it as much as I did.

    The Red Helmet: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8m...d-helmet_sport

I got to see 7 movies tonight and they were all absolutely amazing. If you guys ever get the chance to go you watch (http://www.banffmountainfestivals.ca/tour/unitedstates/) you have to take advantage. Amazing couple of hours

Have you ever seen Dean Potter do the high liner?

Have you ever seen Dean Potter do the high liner?

Yeah Ive watched that video like 100 times since friday ahah. Glad you like it.

As for the highlining that stuff is unreal. The nads on that guy to walk on that rope with no safety line is beyond me. Thats almost to the point where it's kinda dumb in my opinion. I mean if the wind blows he dies. Thats crazy stuff.

I'm wanting to get more into biking and whitewater kayaking. Anyone got any cool stories?

so since I used to be in love with rock climbing (the vid is actually bouldering, whatevs) and this is the outdoors thread I thought I would show you all my favorite climber back when I was competing. Well, actually I'm not competing now and Dave Graham is still my favorite climber. this line is brutal, and he sends with style.
Think you'll be impressed. well, it's rated v15 which is right up there with worlds hardest, so it's really fucking hard.

    That was ridiculous.

I'll throw in my favorite climbing video too.

Chris Sharma- Worlds Hardest Deep Water Solo route- http://champsrc.multiply.com/video/item/35

The dyno in the middle is insane. I would love to just go try this one day to see how far i could get (aka probably not even out of the water)

Sharma is a God. Graham is the man too. Has anyone seen Graham doing hang-board workouts?
How strong of climbers are you ants?
I can usually send 5.11 range thats about it though. I am not too into bouldering, I could care less about getting 20 feet off the ground. Trad/sport is the way to go.
