I wasn't saying the results were wrong. I was pointing out how little my opinion matters, which is why I haven't submitted a list in previous years. I found it comical more than anything.
I wouldn't go as far as to say your opinion doesn't matter. You solidified Three Billboards as a Top 3 finisher and likely ensured that Blade Runner 2049 finished in the Top 5 as opposed to just the Top 10. Without your Top 3 placement of Spider-Man: Homecoming, it wouldn't have even finished in the Top 20. The largest impact was felt by your placement of Alien: Covenant though. We had 72 eligible films and if you hadn't ranked it where you did, it would've finished 72nd as opposed to landing in the Top 50.

so Clay if I'd been able to properly put in Billboards as my #1, that still wouldn't have made it win overall, right?

Not if you also placed Logan at #2. Your placement of The Shape of Water would've made things interesting though. If it was anywhere in your top 10, it still would've finished 2nd overall. However, if you had placed it 11th or lower (or left it off your list altogether), Three Billboards would've finished 2nd instead. The race for 2nd was much closer than the race for 1st.

In looking at things even closer, I didn't realize how little separation there was between 3rd through 6th. If someone had submitted an additional list where Blade Runner 2049 placed 1st, Three Billboards placed 3rd, and The Shape of Water was left off completely, then they would've been ranked: (2) Blade Runner 2049; (3) The Shape of Water; and (4) Three Billboards. Lady Bird and Wind River also could've finished 2-3 places higher if there was another list ranking them at or near the top.

To get some more discussion going in here, I thought we could treat the whole thing like a guessing game. We have 13 directors who have had multiple entries on our lists, and we also have 13 actors/actresses who have made at least 4 appearances in the 80 films we've awarded over that period.

The directors list is a lot easier to figure out so please avoid looking back at our past results to figure it out. You should easily be able to do so. As for acting, there are about 4 or 5 people I never would've expected to see included.

Guess away if you're so inclined.
    Updated Lists:

    Directing
    1. David Fincher (3 – Avg. 2.0)
    2. Damien Chazelle (2 – Avg. 2.0)
    3. Alejandro González Iñárritu (2 – Avg. 2.0)
    4. Denis Villeneuve (2 – Avg. 3.0)
    5. Martin Scorsese (2 – Avg. 4.0)
    6. Ben Affleck (2 – Avg. 4.5)
    7. David O. Russell (2 – 4.5)
    8. Spike Jonze (2 – 5.0)
    9. Quentin Tarantino (2 – 5.0)
    10. Christopher Nolan (2 – Avg. 5.5)
    11. J.J. Abrams (2 – 6.0)
    12. Wes Anderson (2 – Avg. 6.0)
    13. Kathryn Bigelow (2 – Avg. 6.0)
    14. Alexander Payne (2 – Avg. 6.5)
    15. Danny Boyle (2 – Avg. 8.0)
    16. Joel and Ethan Coen (2 – Avg. 8.5)
    17. Rich Moore (2 – Avg. 9.5)

Note: With Blade Runner 2049's #4 ranking this year, in combination with Arrival's #2 ranking last year, Denis Villeneuve went from being unranked to placing 4th on our directing list.

    Acting
    1. Ryan Gosling (5 – Avg. 3.4)
    2. Kyle Chandler (5 – Avg. 4.8)
    3. Jeremy Renner (5 – Avg. 5.0)
    4. Brad Pitt (5 – Avg. 5.8)
    5. Jessica Chastain (5 – Avg. 7.4)
    6. Leonardo DiCaprio (4 – Avg. 2.75)
    7. Shea Whigham (4 – Avg. 4.25)
    8. Domhnall Gleeson (4 – Avg. 4.25)
    9. Oscar Isaac (4 – Avg. 4.75)
    10. Amy Adams (4 – Avg. 5.0)
    11. Chris Pratt (4 – 5.25)
    12. Jonah Hill (4 – Avg. 6.0)
    13. Samuel L. Jackson (4 – Avg. 6.25)

Note: No new actors/actresses made their way onto the list this year. However, with the inclusion of Blade Runner 2049 and Wind River in our Top 10, Ryan Gosling jumped from 5th to 1st place, and Jeremy Renner jumped from 9th to 3rd place. Renner will try to improve his standing by appearing in Avengers: Infinity War this spring, but leapfrogging Gosling and Chandler will likely prove to be an effort in futility since they both appear in Damien Chazelle's (our #2 director) First Man this fall.

I've still not seen The Shape Of Water, so no it wouldn't have been on my list at all. and to be perfectly honest, even it winning best pic, I still don't exactly have a strong desire to watch it.
I will say though I'm pleased that the Best Director and Best Film were the same thing this year, because I find the notion that they would ever be two separate things completely absurd.

but while I'm at it, this still was included in one of Collider's articles

    http://cdn.collider.com/wp-content/u...-water-lab.jpg

is the shape and design of the piping on the giant wall behind the two women supposed to evoke the image of the Creature From The Black Lagoon? I mean, considering what the movie is, that would make sense to me, but it's also what jumped out to my eye right upon seeing the frame.

The lists are tough when there are movies that simply didn't get seen much. I mean I didn't see The Disaster Artist, so I couldn't even list it, but I probably should have seen it. In other words, it deserved a place on my list, but I couldn't do it without seeing it. Same thing with like Alien Covenant. I mean it wasn't on most people's lists, but that doesn't mean it was the worst movie of the year.

But I'd venture to guess that there were far more people who saw Alien: Covenant and intentionally excluded it than there were people who saw The Disaster Artist and chose to do the same.

There are hundreds upon hundreds of movies released each year. Something finishing 72nd (last) on our list wouldn't absolutely quantify it as the worst movie of the year.

actually yeah I can buy that. The Post does seem like objectively the better movie, but it's pretty much 'meh' all the way thru, while JL does have a collection of enjoyable moments though on the whole a poor film.

I was thinking about that contest this morning. Stuhlbarg was in like 9 good films this year so I thought his stock would rise but only one made the top 10.

Of the films I saw that qualified, it would've been the 6th lowest on my list. If a group of film critics got together and ranked the hundreds of features they saw this year and then compiled their ratings, it would finish much, much lower than 72nd place. That doesn't mean that they're right and you're wrong though.

Average is based on the number of lists a film appears on, not the total number of lists submitted. But average is just a starting point.

This is a good post. My list of 50 I submitted, I'd venture to say only 42 and below would receive below 3 stars from me. My 20-45 are all quality, 4 star movies, several of which finished very high or on top of some others' complete lists.

It’s not really horror. Though the scary parts are the scariest shit I’ve ever seen. It’s super hard to explain what it is.

I'm surprised it even made two lists and qualified.

Before I crunched the numbers, I wondered whether every BP nominee from the last 8 years had even qualified. Then I remembered that War Horse made the cut in 2011 so I figured everything else also must've made it.

    Next 10 lowest:

    10. Bridge of Spies (2015) - #27
    T-8. Life of Pi (2012) - #29
    T-8. The Kids Are All Right (2010) - #29
    7. Hidden Figures (2016) - #31
    6. Darkest Hour (2017) - #42
    T-4. Selma (2014) - #44
    T-4. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011) - #44
    3. The Post (2017) - #47
    2. The Theory of Everything (2014) - #55
    1. Lion (2016) - #62

Happens to me all the time. I only saw 29 movies for 2017 so I only ranked the top 10. Now you have me wondering where I would have ranked Logan if I had done that. Hmmm....

    Man you're such a dork.

But i have a question. Which would hurt a movie's ranking more, not being on a top 10 list or being ranked like 15th or 20th on a list?

    Guilty.

Being left off a list completely would probably hurt it more. Being ranked 15th or 20th won’t get it any bonus points in and of itself like a Top 10 placement would, but it would benefit from the “percentage of lists appeared on” bonus.
