If he gets any further I'm voting for him just to see a dmb song on idol! Go Phillip!

The collective approval of Phillips Phillips on these boards kind of shocks me. I am pretty into American Idol, but I don't know why all you guys are stooping to the level of comparing him to Dave. Do you not listen to other music these days? Musicians who play folk/rock in that style are a dime a dozen these days. Just because he does a unique version of Thriller, he should not be put on a higher level than the dozens of others who do good acoustic covers of good songs, and more importantly, he should not be compared to teh Dave Matthews.

Yeah... I don't think they have in the past (and I would like to see them continue that streak) but you never know if they will in the future. There have been quite a few surprises over the years. Most surprising was Lambert doing a Zeppelin tune... Money talks.

Personally, I thought he sucked...he sucked less when he picked up the guitar.

As far as the Dave mannerisms, he tilted his head back when singing loud, moving his feet kind of like him, also did the "Dave face" when hitting the fallseto or higher notes.

    There is my 2 cents...
Yeah instead JLO says "He's like James Brown!".....

Phillip I will absolutely vote for you but I have to say I would prefer you to win with your originals. Real talent on that show is very rare, and talent that sticks around is ruined by record labels. Your style of music and your approach is unique and from the little we have seen there is a lot more that I would personally like to see and I'm sure others share the same thoughts.

I wish you the best of luck and look forward to watching you. Stick with originals and show the "judges of today's music" that originality and creativity is an essential part of music - Not having to prove your talent through someone else' music (although that cover of Thriller is great!).

He definitely doesn't sound like Dave but he has clearly studied Dave in every detail and is trying to copy him completely. His one eyebrow raises, his jerky movements, the feet. I watched a couple videos of him of other covers on Youtube and it sounds like on every song he thinks "How would Dave sing this?" and then does it that way. And since he is doing that he is enjoyable to listen to but hate that he is trying to rip off the essence of Dave.

I don't know what their copyright status is overseas, but it's most likely different than the US. There's been a few kids on this show that have been clear DMB fans and we've yet to hear a DMB tune. There's got to be a reason for that. And if it's that the band hasn't allowed it, I hope they continue that trend.

I don't think anyone is comparing him to Dave in any artistic or musical way. Just the fact that he moves and even strums his guitar without a doubt like someone who has either studied or just watched him waaaaaay too much.

Very obvious, and wants a D&T thing going on too....well, who hasnt tried to sing like Dave in this forum?? for most of us, its our favorite band so, it is understandable the kid has Dave's influences, he is perhaps an ant or a warehouser.

Eh, I can't think of their names but there have been a few that have at least seemed like they had a 'Dave-like' influence. Nothing like this Philip Phillips kid.... but I'm certain I've heard some Davish similarities. All I'm saying is, I'm surprised that no one has done DMB tunes... The only explanation I can think of is that the band/management has not allowed it. If they haven't, I hope they stick to it. Even though I watch the show (which may or may not be b/c I have a 13 year old daughter), that doesn't mean I want to see songs by DMB or any other 'respectable' band.... b/c let's face it, this show is lame as fuck.

He definitely emulates Dave a good amount. Even did the eyebrow thing. But he sounds good... he doesn't sound like a rip off, nor do I think he is one. I think most people sound like their influences a little. We just happen to know every little thing about Dave, so it's easy to pick up.

His In the air tonight is badass. (listen to it without watching and it could almost be dave... his vocal style is scary similar.)

With all of that said, I'm very surprised at the response. I thought he would get ripped here.
