Anyone else think this one has hints of that old soundcheck song that was called “Dressed in Black”? Not that I think that’s where it was derived from, but those verses sound a lot like an updated version of the vocal line and overall chord progression (even though he played it as fingerpicking in the soundcheck version).

Real into the song, still. The chorus in particular is very strong. As has been stated by others, annoyed Dave is writing melody he can't consistently hit live and reaching for it regardless. Definitely parts of this song apply to that.

I was thinking about this and new songs as of late. Bismarck strong chorus. Moon strong chorus. Do You Remember Atleast catchy chorus. Feel like he’s been nailing his more recent chorus’s pretty well. He loses the verses sometimes which is more than likely just that he spends less time working on it than the chorus. Just do more of both and we’re headed in right direction.

I actually was thinking this as well today. A good chorus is way less effective if the verses aren’t good. I’m awaiting a clean studio vocal on verses before I decide if these verses are good or not

I think I agree with this. I'd say Virginia in the Rain and Again and Again have strong choruses too. Especially Virginia, I love that chorus.

Which is why Bismarck works. Verses are solid and flow.

Agree that chorus is worthless if you can’t sing with the verses.

I’d say the opposite is true with gaucho and you and me. Both songs verses are strong but the chorus kills the song. You need both. You and me is one of my most hated songs. I always am challenged by this because I love the music to the song and I actually love singing the verses. I just cannot get into the chorus at all. The yes yes and baby kill me. If he managed a not so cheesy and better delivered chorus, despite the success the song had, the success would’ve been 10 fold.

Well said on VITR, love the song too.

For me personally, while both is preferred, a good chorus can save a song more than good verse melody. It is amazing how much better You and Me's verse melody is vs. its chorus melody. I think Dive In (along with gaucho like you said) also go through that problem. And unfortunately, I think the choru melodies to all those songs are right up there with most of Stand Up, which really doesn't have a good chorus to speak of.

VITR feels like it’s the only song Dave gave 100% effort on from all aspects in quite awhile and the end result shows. Great studio song. I think it’s very solid Live too although i probably wouldn’t want it at every show I attend but I can say that for a lot of songs.

7/24 walk around me moon has moved me from liking it to full believer. I was down on Dave for pushing his voice to places it shouldn't (parts of this song applied). May have been more due to the sirius mix than I thought. Sounded fantastic to me in the taper pull of 7/24. Everyone contributes to this song and you can actually hear it on the taper pull. Not to mention the performance was like 2x tighter than opening night.

I think they could kill it after a midset DDTW or R &R something to cool if off and transition the vibe a bit.. Agreed it's a fantastic song...

Maybe it's saying that Dave just isn't writing songs for 20,000 people .. his quieter stuff seems to be where he's happiest... windows, VITR, Death on The High Seas.. Bismarck... etc...

He probably never intended to. I mean I'll Back You Up isn't exactly a banger when it's the first song you play for the musicians you want to back you up.. and the early version of recently isn't either...

Hell I'd say he tried too hard to make Samurai Cop an anthem...when it could have just been a good solid Dave solo song.. No need to make it U2.. but it's obvious that's what he thought it needed for the live setting..

I didn’t even know there was sax in the song until hearing the 2nd version. It does sound much better. The only part I don’t like is the last verse with the “because” part. It sounds like he’s forcefully explaining something. Jsut clean that part up. The first two verses sound so much better on that version.

Man Saturday’s version is really really good. I wish after first chorus they add a trippy instrumental short verse. It would make a huge difference.
