I’ve been saying this for years. It would have made a good album big 3 level. Still love it tho. Glad to see this thread has some people changing their minds.

Every so often I re-listen to it, just the other day in fact. I was going through some pretty intense personal changes when it came out, and it still conjures up those memories, because sonically it's got such a cohesive identity (whereas Come Tomorrow feels disjointed mostly).

Aside from Dave's corny moments (even though I roll my eyes when we get to the "belly jelly" line, part of me still appreciates what a complete dorky goofball that man is) or the times where he's being just too plain-language preachy (Mercy) this would absolutely stand out as Big 3-level to me. Even a "solo" track like Sweet is fine in that regard, as the rest of the band does come in at the end.

It's also, for me, inextricably tied to the autumn season that it was released in, and I feel like that was a brilliant choice for them. The tone doesn't have enough bright, poppy energy to really be a summertime album. But it completely owns that slanting light at the end of September.

It definitely feels like a fall tone album. Always felt that way. Like it’s still light but there’s darkness ahead type vibe. Mercy lyrics don’t really bother me. If he’s going to be preachy that’s a much better way of doing it than some of the other ones we’ve gotten like gaucho chorus. But yeah the album just feels cohesive which goes a long way.

I always thought Snow Outside would become an awesome live jam, but it's been completely abandoned. It was played in the acoustic sets 2014-15, but never really jammed out. Love the album as a whole and wish it was played more.

I think some of the songs on this album were a little too personal/revealing and hit a little too close to home, which is why it's not revisited in concerts much. It's Dave's midlife-crisis record, and I think someday far in the future, we'll hear some very interesting stories about those songs.

I'm a huge "The Riff" fan, words to the song really speak to me. Would love to hear that live. Found it in a show in NO with Dave and Tim 1/16/14- video on You Tube. Really enjoyed that .

I think The Riff is one of the best on the album and it doesn't seem to get a lot of love around here. I'll take it at any show.

The Riff and Broken Things are 2 criminally underplayed songs in the AFTW era is started going to shows in starting May of 2012. I caught each once but still thing these are songs that translated very well live unlike most of AFTW. I definitely got my fair share of Drunken Soldier and Snow Outside which are great songs. But I would have loved to get more Broken things and the riff.

I will say sweet in 2021 has been upgraded to a whole new level compared to the versions i heard from 2012 to 2015.

I still love this album, it's just a shame that Dave abandoned most of the songs live. If you had told me back in 2012 that Snow Outside would only be played over the next 6 years, and that Broken Things and Gaucho would basically go the way of something like Mother Father and Angel, I would've called bullshit.

I do love what they've done with Sweet this year though, and Buddy being able to play If Only is much better than Boyd's drones. That Mercy from 2019 was really tasty too. It's just a shame that none of the songs really developed. Less Jimi, more AFTW

Does Dave hate this album? Probably.

Unlike the other ass kissers Dave has chosen to work with who allow him to produce crap, Steve Lillywhite is an actual professional producer who doesn't settle for mediocrity. While Away From The World still sucked in the end, the few bright lyrical spots that shine through were undoubtedly the result of Lillywhite's involvement. Last thing Dave wants at this point in his arrogant life is someone telling him how to write music, and unfortunately that is the thing he needs the most.

Completely agree with this review. The album demonstrated a maturity in the composition that has largely been missing with other producers. I put this album on from start to finish while rarely listening to any single other than snow outside.

Seems like Dave listened to AFTW before Gorge and remembered it has some nice songs. Wish they would have played Broken Things, but was happy getting The Riff, If Only, and Drunk Soldier!

Agreed, I don't get the hate for Everyday other than it was a radical shift at the time. So many great tunes in that album. I think it's gotten better and better over the years.

The Riff was celebrated here when it was first leaked/revealed, as being such a good song, now it's totally buried.

such an oddity - took a listen to Away from the world today and besides Gaucho and Drunken Soldier (which has the roots of a good song, but just falters in terms of how they finished it), good album overall. Good atmosphere there too in terms of letting the instrumentalists happen and do their thing. Who can possibly hate on those last few mins of Snow Outside or that first blast of Broken Things? Even belly belly nice is a fun little song with some blazing horn action. the riff=strong song top to bottom and im a sucker for if only, makes me wanna slow dance.

First post in a decade or so? Why not.

This album rocks. I have no idea how people don’t like this. It’s not Big 3, sure, but my goodness, it’s way better than anything else post-Busted Stuff. Belly Nice is a good song with truly awful lyrics. The entire rest of this album is solid to great – at least Some Devil-level good, and a very similar vibe, too.
