I'd rather have them have someone like Bela or Victor Wooten guest.

or.... find a new fucking fiddle player.
That's fair, but I disagree. Tim has a very unique style and sound that's worlds away from Warren, Krasno, Whitfield, Mayer, Jordan, and others. I'm all good with them jamming with any other great musician on any instrument. Ideally they have a unique voice and/or bring something new/different AND they jam on a DMB tune.

Warren's Cortez @MSG in 2018 was great, but his Tripping Billies took the song to a place it's not gone before. All those years in the Allmans, Warren has so very many hours of playing great lines in major keys. Also, his pipes are extraordinary...just a stellar vocalist.

I agree. Never understood the love for this song really by any artist

I’m fine with no guests at all with the current lineup, too many people on stage as is.

DMB should look into other singular female vocalist guests other than the Lovely Ladies. Like Grace Potter, Brandi Carlile on any song.

Nooo Sniper! I love Cortez!! Well we agreed on so many things, so I guess it is ok.
It is not a song that I’d like to hear at every concert, but once in a while is cool.
What exactly is that you don’t like?

WH on Stand Up? Did this really happen?

It was just a hypothetical. Robert Randolph, Eric Krasno, and Joe Lawlor were the only guitarist guests this song has had. Besides for Tim.

    RSSRcyclopedia. Thanks.
Among those, I am curious to hear what SU sounds like with Randolph. This guy turns everything into gold.

Nope. You need a full set of Everyday/Stand Up with top to bottom Lovely Ladies guesting.

Can't Stop is an awesome song.

But it was much better in 2006 when it was just Dave, Fonz and Carter.

Unique style as in plays 2,000 notes per minute and a unique sound that buries dave. It's like if Jack Johnson told a session guitarist to play over him and made said session guitarist a permanent member of his touring band.

What Mayer or Whitfield or Warren do is compliment and leave space for daves guitar to actually be heard and be the focal point. What sucks about tim is outside the DMB 2 Sets when he had an acoustic in hand he plays electric guitar over parts that originally were better without tim. Case in point the Busted Stuff from Live Trax 22.

The big difference is the slower tempo it used to have before being sped up (as with most DMB songs that are worse now then in their road testing/early release stages). Can't stop suffers the same fate as DDTW and Grey Street.

Re: Share your unpopular DMB opinions.

Funny what time can do, but I'm going out on a limb to say the 04 songs are not as great as they're hyped up to be.

Joy Ride - Had every making of a classic DMB song and Dave butchered the lyrics
Crazy Easy - Cool groove, but no lyrics and the song kind of goes nowhere (Roi was great, but that was the best part)
Good Good Time - Glorified jam
Sugar Will - Had the most potential to be a classic DMB jam, but it never made an album, there were never lyrics, and now it's so far removed from how it sounded in 04 it has become something else entirely
Hello Again - Killer tune that was completely ruined on the album and only got a couple years of play. Best of the bunch.

This is not to say I dislike these songs, but they were ideas that never really went anywhere and hovered around in the background for years. I think that at the time they were refreshing to hear because they were the first bunch of new songs we had heard since Everyday (not counting Loving Wings, Where Are You Going, Gravedigger or You Never Know) and they sounded like the natural progression of the band's sound at the time. It was great to think that Everyday was this little one-time only experiment and hear the band was headed back to their root sound that summer...of course we all know what happened, but in my opinion the years have not been kind to the unfinished leftovers that are the 04 songs.

That's a super myopic view of what Tim does and has done in the context of DMB. This may have been the case for the last few years while Boyd was around, but it wasn't the case during the last few tours w/ Buddy...especially Fall 2018 through Summer 2019.

Whitfield was FLYING on Captain at MSG in 2018, so that's most recent example isn't good for your note speed and density argument. That said, it's fine if Tim isn't your cuppa, but I find the issues you're having might have more to do with your preferences (and that of others) than objective problems that Tim's style causes for the band. Were there a problem with it among the band, I'm sure they'd've dealt with it by now.

However, I do wish Jeff were given as much free rein and solo time as Tim seems to have...

Hello Again is my least favorite of the 04 songs. I like it, but it is inferior to the other 3. My ranking would be

    Sugar Will
    Crazy Easy
    Joyride
    Hello Again

I don’t really count Good Good Time. It debuted as a Dave and Friends tune with Brady and Tim. Was only played 15 times on the tour, compared to 40+ from the other 4, and it wasn’t named on a set list for most the tour before it ended up disappearing. It’s a good jam though.

GGT has more full band plays than Let You Down, Spoon, and Busted Stuff. Totally random stat.

Was lucky enough to hear GGT at wrigley (partial) and sugar will & joyride in 2019.

Would love to get crazy easy and hello again this tour.

And that’s a crazy stat above. Sheesh.

Think the 04 songs are also combined with the fact that the band probably sounded its best during this tour.

GGT was amazing to hear the different improv lyrics from night to night, it was a fun tune that should be different every time its played in that kind of way

    Bismark is overrated

Outside the verse lyrics, the song doesn’t have anything else. Boring guitar, and almost cringeworthy chorus lyrics

I second this but after watching some older clips, I'd be fine with an ending sax solo with a short Dave acoustic solo again. I miss that.

Haha, my thoughts exactly, I love me some Bismarck. Not that it's groundbreaking in any way, it's not, but just seems much more dmb than the rest of the CT songs IMO, I dig it

Hey all, long time lurker, first time poster, blahblah. Figured the hot takes thread would be the most fun way to introduce myself, so here goes:

    1. I enjoy those 15-minute Angels with the Ladies. Roi and Butch are so smooth. Yes, the Ladies can be hokey at times, but their voices fit the song. I listen to the LT31 version all the time, and I'm digging this new one on LT56.

    2. That Girl is You is a great studio track. With the skeletal instrumental and pitching, wailing vocals, it feels like whirling around, drunk and in love, at a party - which, of course, is what the song is about. It's a great example of storytelling in music.

    3. [Maybe less unpopular] Jimi Thing in its current form is DMB's worst live experience. That thing is a set-killer.
