Re: Official Phish Discussion

These responses are spot on. The other day, I was wondering if I was missing anything by not following this DMB tour at all. I opened up the almanac and took a look at the liberation list, found all these on there:

Loving Wings
Dreaming Tree
PFWYG
IBYU
Spoon
Good Good Time
Crazy Easy
Joyride
Kit Kat Jam

There's so many others, but those (to me, for the most part) are, and should be, DMB staples. Then the staples they are playing aren't that good anymore. RIP Billies and Two Step.

I've only been to one DMB show since Gorge '16, and that was Jazzfest this year. Only reason I went was because I was already there for other shows and wanted to experience the actual fest for a day. Never been to Deer Creek and would love to go sometime, but I wouldn't hesitate in deciding to go to Camden either.

Just looked at the stats for the tour this year, and outside of the new album, there's only one song they've played all tour that I haven't caught. JTR. Played once.

I will say this though: for those of us who've moved on from DMB to Phish, part of that probably has to do with our desire to see a band take risks, knowing that sometimes it doesn't work. Phish can go on stage and have the ability to play almost any tune in their repertoire, but sometimes it just...doesn't sound good. But you move on and don't give it much thought.

With DMB, sure they won't play a ton of different songs each tour, but they're going to be tight, and well played. Some people like that and want that in a band.

    Re: Official Phish Discussion

I'll add to the 'Skip DMB and Just Go See Phish' crowd. I've been seeing DMB since 95. Never went crazy though with traveling to see them (would hit like 4-5 shows a year) and spent 6 years not seeing them at all. Attended my 50th show last summer at Summerfest. This current incarnation of the band is not really my cup of tea. And they just don't do it for me anymore musically. The lack of violin hurts the band, and the way they play some songs just bugs the shit out of me. Add to that the ticket price and it's basically a no-brainer for me to not see this band anymore.

Phish is where it's at for me these days and I just get so much more from them and their shows that I don't ever see myself not going to a Phish show. As long as they can keep playing at this level and doing new things to keep phans interested I'll always go see them.

9 year anniversary of my first Phish show. Huge Alumni>Jimmy>Alumni bustout opener and the infamous MJ-themed 2001. Go seek that one out if you haven’t heard it!

Can’t wait for this weekend. Anyone here hitting Camden? I have an open bed at the Wyndham Historic District for Friday night. Let me know if anyone needs a spot to crash.

Ironically, yesterday was my nine-year anniversary of seeing Phish for the first time. Incredible show. Hood, Fluffhead, Julius, YEM to end the second set.

Wow didn’t expect to set off that convo haha. And believe me we were more than half ready, we were looking at air bnb prices on the way home. Skipping dmb would just involve selling off tickets and blowing off people we planned to meet at deer creek so we’re sticking to plan. The venue difference and missing N3 of phish really were big factors in the decision too.

But with that said I am more than on board. If dmb was coming to Pittsburgh I wouldn’t be attending deer creek. All of my concert travel dollar is going to phish going forward. The concert experience isn’t even on the same planet.

My 30th bday is this November, my friend and I already agreed we will make whatever trip necessary to hit some more this fall.

I really became a Phish fan in 2011/2012 and the last time I saw DMB was 2012. I come to ants periodically for this thread. A lot of the same names (plus a whole bunch more) have been in here since I jumped on the train in 2011/2012..which is cool. I wish I would have came around earlier.

I'm not entirely on the skip DMB for Phish train. I'm more on the skip DMB and see as many other artists as possible. I was looking at my show stats by year the other day on Setlist.Fm and saw where at the height of my seeing DMB I wasn't seeing anyone else. I was spending all my money traveling for DMB. Now, I just want to see everyone that I enjoy. If DMB comes to town or within a 3 hour radius and it's easy to get to I'll go. Otherwise, I can skip them. I've gotten everything I'm gonna get from DMB at this point.

I don't agree that these should be "DMB Staples" If something is going to be a hard and fast staple, it should be on an album.

Cornbread has been played 324 times.
Granny has been played 541 times.

Neither of those are on an album.

And seeing as how Phish doesn't rely on 40+ plays for certain songs all tour, this is probably a relatively even distribution of song play for the tour.

I think I've seen Farmhouse twice and both times it was a substantial pee/beer run time for the crowd.

Which is to say, nobody wants Farmhouse to be a staple, so I don't even know what Hilly's point is

Maybe he's saying that songs like the ones he cherry picked are about as popular with the general DMB fan as Farmhouse is for a Phish fan? Hence why the shouldn't be staples.

Ah..hmm, I don't really buy that. Pretty sure the general DMB fan likes basically everything, including those songs which are also songs die-hards love.

I'm sure there's phans like thoroughly enjoy Farmhouse, but also if many went the rest of their lives never hearing it again probably wouldn't have much of an impact.

Nah, I think it was something like 18 of the summer shows. Mixlr/periscope/fblive are best bets.

On another note, anyone have experience with the Philly/Camden ferry? Do you need tix ahead of time or just show up and buy a round trip pre-show?

Took me 25 shows to get my first Simple. Missed the Dozen Simple by a night, finally got it New Years Run 17, albeit a brief one. Looking forward to hearing this one tomorrow. Band definitely seems like they’ve hit their stride for this tour over the weekend.
