Trey was really messed up in 2.0 right? That last show in 04 when trey started crying was some shit. I would imagine it would have been a pretty tough time to be a fan then.

Those videos don't even fully capture the atrocity that was that weekend. It basically monsooned, became closed off, and people had to park on the highway and hike in, only to have all of their tents flooded for the weekend. Had a buddy that went, said it's one of his greatest regrets. I can only imagine the taste that leaves for 5 years.

As mentioned though, 2.0 still had great moments. Phish w/ BB King:

coventry was my first phish experience. it was...interesting, to say the least. i didnt have to park and walk thankfully, i was probably one of the last cars they let in. That said, since i hadnt devoted any time or money to them prior to that weekend, it didnt leave a sour taste in my mouth like it did others. i was aware though that there was a band hitting the proverbial wall right in front of us the entire weekend.

    that hiatus was 1000% needed.

I've never really even heard the full story here - can you, or anybody else, go into a bit more detail. I know that Trey had gotten into some pretty bad shit as far as drugs were concerned, but can anybody expand on what led up to Coventry and exactly how they were hitting that wall on stage?

I don't know how long phish allowed fans to record soundboards but what's a good SBD recorded show for the 90s?

Anything in say 98 or are sbds much earlier then that

    YEM
    Twist
    AC/DC bag
    Wilson
    2001

towards the end of 1.0, the rampant drug use both in the band and scene got pretty bad. they got magnified during the 2003/2004 tours, and those bad habits were finally catching up to them, especially trey.

    healthy trey:
    http://wyep.org/files/audio/trey.jpg

far from sober, likely on the verge of death trey:
    https://i.ytimg.com/vi/qRHWFeGHiZI/hqdefault.jpg

listen to this version of glide from coventry
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oEw9BHN8ZY

this is what it SHOULD sound like
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RxbMjTD83I

the music was overall a giant trainwreck at coventry. missed notes, sloppy play. their very last song that weekend, The Curtain With, which was going to be the last song they ever played, a song which had been around since the 80's, they started playing in the wrong key, so they stopped and started again. just downright ugliness. there may be some jams that strike a chord for you*, but it was clear that the band was falling apart in front of our eyes.

*on one of the band's free "Live Bait" releases a few years ago, they released select tracks from all their festivals. they included just the jam portion of Split Open and Melt from Coventry, because the composed section leading up to it was downright awful. the jam is actually pretty good, albeit dark and drug-inspired, but they lacked any coordination to pull off composed sections

walking out of the venue after their last note was a somber experience. usually its full of joy and happiness, but it was just a quiet walk back to the campground

it was a perfect storm for a shitty goodbye: awful weather leading up, people stranding their cars and walking 10-20-30 miles into the festival, mud everywhere, and the band's physical health prevented them from giving a proper sendoff.

from the point of view of the scene: that 5 year hiatus was absolutely needed. it was getting pretty dirty. lotta bad drugs were floating around and there were some shady characters at the shows.

    the bullet points are:

The party/backstage scene had gotten out of hand at concerts during the late 90s. It was referred to as the "Betty Ford Clinic". Trey even mentioned that how he sometimes wanted to just hang back there instead of going back out to play. Part of it was that all of their friends would be there but also the drugs/alcohol. There is actually a series of photos still on Phish's website chronicling their last few weeks on tour in 2000. Trey looks rough.

Hiatus (2000-2002) was supposed to be a way to "get rid" of the bad scene at shows. However Trey felt bad that these people he/the band had employed to work for them were now essentially out of a job. So he went and did solo shows and Oysterhead and brought those people along. Thus he never got away from the bad scene.

When they came back in 2002 the scene came back with them and it just got worse and worse. The 2004 Vegas shows (without their lighting guy Chris Kuroda, possibly in rehab) were the first real train wreck. After that Trey wrote this:
    Quote:
Last Friday night, I got together with Mike, Page and Fish to talk openly about the strong feelings I’ve been having that Phish has run its course and that we should end it now while it’s still on a high note. Once we started talking, it quickly became apparent that the other guys’ feelings, while not all the same as mine, were similar in many ways — most importantly, that we all love and respect Phish and the Phish audience far too much to stand by and allow it to drag on beyond the point of vibrancy and health. We don’t want to become caricatures of ourselves, or worse yet, a nostalgia act. By the end of the meeting, we realized that after almost twenty-one years together we were faced with the opportunity to graciously step away in unison, as a group, united in our friendship and our feelings of gratitude.

So Coventry will be the final Phish show. We are proud and thrilled that it will be in our home state of Vermont. We’re also excited for the June and August shows, our last tour together. For the sake of clarity, I should say that this is not like the hiatus, which was our last attempt to revitalize ourselves. We’re done. It’s been an amazing and incredible journey. We thank you all for the love and support that you’ve shown us.— Trey Anastasio

the music was overall a giant trainwreck at coventry. missed notes, sloppy play. their very last song that weekend, The Curtain With, which was going to be the last song they ever played, a song which had been around since the 80's, they started playing in the wrong key, so they stopped and started again. just downright ugliness. there may be some jams that strike a chord for you*, but it was clear that the band was falling apart in front of our eyes.

I had forgotten how bad this is.

They picked the perfect closing song, too. The fact that they had to restart the 2nd half of it pretty much summed up all of 2004.
