NEW: The $600 coronavirus jobless benefit expires at the end of this month. Senate Republicans are determined not to extend it, decrying it as an incentive to stay out of work.
McConnell says it was a “mistake.”
They‘re unsure what to replace it with.

I said this the other day, but the federal unemployment benefit has been huge for employees, too. We can keep our workers marginally attached to the company, keep them financially secure, so that when business picks back up we can bring them back in rather than worrying about a rehiring/retraining process; which is a huge cost to us.
Employees like the benefit, many large employers and manufacturing firms like the benefit. I understand that there may be some cases where it hurts a small business because their employees would prefer unemployment, but A) that probably shows an inefficiency in their structure and pay/incentives and B) it's still capped at 13 weeks, I believe, so at this point many of the initial jobless filers are no long eligible and it is not a disincentive to return to work.
McConnell must be confused - his job is to pump the economy up for his incumbent during the election year. He's not supposed to choke it until a Dem is President. Or maybe he wants Trump to lose...I don't know. Whatever the case, this is a foolish stance to take if you want the economy to recover quickly.
