Well, to your point, it's an important movie culturally in that it's the first superhero movie featuring a predominantly African American cast and the first focusing on an African American hero (other than Blade, Spawn, Steel, and Hancock).
But, by that same token, Wonder Woman should have been nominated for best picture the year it was released.
Subjectively, I didn't think BP was a good movie, at all. The best part of it was Killmonger. Storytelling, cinematography, acting, CGI...all looked like pretty standard superhero fare to me.
