Interesting point. I'll say this, Beto would have likely never got so much national attention if he had tried to be more moderate and middle of the road. He turned that national attention into a TON of donations to help his campaign. Also, with how fired up the GOP base is because of Trump, I would be surprised if a moderate would have been able to get many of them to switch to vote against Cruz.
