    not always.

of the post yield records, avocado probably would have the best chance of a 'full album' show (and maybe it IS telling no avocado songs were performed msg n1). it was their 'return to rock' record and they got a lot of pub for it. but that record was top heavy, and once you get to parachutes, a good chunk of the fans at a given arena aren't going to know what the next 7 songs are. it would be worse for binaural and riot act. they would definitly lose the non-die hard crowd, which still makes up a majority of any typical show. ed has commented many times on his setlist writing and how he has to mix it up to make sure that people who don't know 'push me pull me', for example, don't become too disengaged.

and to your point- they do have plenty of shows where they lose the crowd. their halloween show at the spectrum is epic in length, but there were lulls all over that set that i saw people in the crowd having a hard time maintaining interest. and checking out fan reviews from this tour alone you'll see people remark about how they didn't keep the crowd's interest. obviously there will be others who will state the opposite, and you take all of those comments with a bit of skepticism, but let's not pretend they're just not capable of pulling out a ho-hum set and performance every once in awhile.

They were trying to not repeat any songs that spectrum 4 nighter. Probably not a fair example.

no, they weren't. backspacer was still new and the fixer got played all four nights and just breathe was 3/4. unthought known, got some, johnny guitar, the end, and speed of sound got multiple plays. staples like why go, corduroy, small town, even flow, daughter, evolution, black, ritfw, and ledbetter had multiple plays. this wasn't like boston 03.

I didn't say they did do it. I was at the shows and Eddie said they were going to try to get to everything or something along those lines.

I know I'm in the minority, but I would love to see Avocado in full.

I absolutely love that album, it's the album that really brought me back to PJ after about a decade, as the last album I really got into prior to that was Vitalogy. Neither No Code nor Yield did anything for me when they came out, and I kind of jumped ship after that and never even really listened to Binaural or Riot Act. When I started reading really great reviews for the S/T album it inspired me to go pick it up and I fell in love with it.

I love every track on the album except for Parachutes, and Inside Job is my favorite PJ song of all time.

i remember when avocado leaked, i listened to that inside job intro on repeat. i was always kind of let down by the quick change when the 'how i choose to feel...' part kicks in just because they had created this wonderful, floyd-like mood and then shattered it with a comlete left turn. i've become accustomed to it and quite like inside job, but still wish they'd have kept the slow burn going.

ok? fact is there is similar variety in the sets they play these days over four shows compared to the philly run. i think using that show as an example of losing a crowd is a pretty fair example.

I can totally see that - I certainly wouldn't complain if that intro built up a little more before busting into the main part of the song.

I love your Floyd analogy because I always thought the intro reminded me very much of Animals.

I'd rank the post-Yield albums in order of their release. Increasingly diminishing returns.

Riot Act and Binaural are neck and neck for the top spot. Lightning Bolt and Backspacer in a fight to the bottom. Avocado is neither terrible nor brilliant.

They don't belong in the same conversation as Bruce and PJ though. Those two have acclaimed massive international success. Nobody outside of the States knows Phish and if they do, they don't give a shit about them.

Phish is not a legendary band...they are a very talented jam band with a cult following. Trey would walk down Time Square unnoticed. He is not a legend, they are not legendary

There are plenty of legendary bands that don't have international success. There are plenty of huge international bands who suck.

While I'm speaking about the collective and not any individual, Trey is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. No band - not one - has achieved the level of success Phish has without any commercial notariety. They're the second most important band in their genre, the first being arguably the most important American band of all time.

The whole cult following thing is laughable. Bands with cult followings don't draw 70,000 people to their own festivals.

Another great looking show. I thought this was funny.

    30. Baba O’Riley-(Townshend) (during the song Ed asks that a tambourine get passed to a kid. When someone snags it he snarls “give it to the kid you fuck”. The kid gets his tambourine.)

awesome two shows at MSG although there were a lot of repeats

one of the great things about PJ is you dont see them year after year so after a while you get so jacked up for shows that the setlists almost dont matter

MSG was pulsating both nights with the floor bouncing up and down.

also- to the idiot who doesnt respect Phish... take a hike man. Trey absolutely gets recognized walking around NYC.
