What did they wave it off for, goalie interference?

That's close, but I will say the goal should count because Price initiates contact with Abellkader.

Does Abellkader even touch Price? Its hard to tell because the gif is making me dizzy and you can pause or anything, but it looks like contact is all on Price

I dunno what you are supposed to do if you are Abby. He went to the net, out of the crease (technically his toe was in but come on) and Price goes right into him himself. They called it incidental contact. Yes it was...by Price.

I would say '96 and '98 were the years that the media thought they were going to do it.
98 I thought they were good, although that's what the goalie carosoule really started, and was shocked when they lost to the Sabres. I remember sitting there and thinking oh my god.

Oh it is. Granted I'm biased but Price goes right into him. That would have ended the game. I thought it at the time and was turned out I was right. 2-0, the way Howie was playing, it was over.

i dont have any data to back this up but it seems that more OT games are ending in OT before a SO this year.

maybe that will change as guys round into midseason form and make less mistakes etc.

Now that you mention it, I think you are right.

That makes sense, which is what the nhl wanted when they made those rule changes for ot. The fresh ice and switching of sides for the long change are making an impact.

I'm not sure now, but as of the weekend, around 50% of OT games were going to shootout.

Edit: The AHL, who is trying the 4on4 then 3on3 thing, it was about 10% were going to shootout. Again, that was 4 days ago I heard that.

Don't know what's going on in here. I see rustysurf using goalie wins to try to make a case for a guy and saying that Raanta (he of the .897 sv% last year) could start on half the teams in the league. Yikes.

And about Mason choking in the playoffs, he's played in two playoff series in his entire life. Had pretty good stats last year too, which was his first appearance in 5 years. Hard to judge a guy one way or another off of a total of 9 playoff games.

Edit: And while his stats were not good in 09 against the Wings, he was not the reason they lost. The Jackets were just dominated.

Wow, looks like I missed some fun yesterday.

Although it was built on kind of a silly premise, the goalie discussion is always a fun one to have. I don't remember a time when there was so much goalie talent in the league. It's incredibly tough to even crack a roster, much less start for a team. With each team dressing two goalies, there's 60 open spots. And even then, decent guys like Ilya Bryzgalov are left without jobs.

Raanta start on half the teams in the league? Hell, he might not even find a backup spot on half the teams in the league. Not knocking him, just pointing out the incredible wealth of talent we're seeing at the position.

Marty still doesn't have a job either. he's not what he used to be, but that means teams like their current backup and starter over him. A few years ago, I can't say that's the case.

Yeah, I almost included Marty in my statement. But it sounds like - at least from what he and his agent are saying - that it's more him waiting for the right opportunity to come along than him not being able to get signed.

To your point though, I don't think there's nearly the amount of interest right now that he was perhaps expecting or that he would've garnered a few years ago.

A few years ago I think he signed by now, because some team that might be the right situation, would have dumped one of their guys for him. His age, mixed with the young talent around, tough for a team to let a guy walk for that. I'm not sure Marty ends up getting sign honestly.

Well, of course but he is 42(?) And not a true #1 as he can't be playing 50+ games anymore. I think he planned all along to sign around xmas (if he really wants to play) with an upper echelon team who might have had a #1 that went down with an injury.

Yep, I don't disagree that he's playing the waiting game to see what kind of positions teams are in.

To what Tim was saying, at this point in the NHL - even outside the goalie position - the focus is moving to young talent rather over veteran experience. Teams are more interested in developing their young goalies than having a 42 year-old backup goalie - even if he is arguably the greatest goalie of all time.

Still, if a team like Washington finds itself in a good spot in a few months, I can see a place like that being a fit.

Teams are more interested in developing their young goalies than having a 42 year-old backup goalie - even if he is arguably the greatest goalie of all time.

Still, if a team like Washington finds itself in a good spot in a few months, I can see a place like that being a fit.
And I agree with that which is why bryz, thomas and khabobulin are sitting home as well.

    Totally.

And outside of goalies, it's why we're seeing a lot of veteran players who have had reasonably long - if sometimes unspectacular - NHL careers losing NHL jobs in the past couple seasons and moving to other leagues because of the influx of young talent.

Wings get Pens the day after Pens/Flyers? That would work to their advantage.

Marty really should have retired. I understand these guys are very type-A, but you need to know when to say when. Patrick Roy who was fucking crazy with how competitive he was, knew to walk away. He probably could have played another couple years, but didn't. I mean 99-02 went to the Western Finals 3 times, the Finals once and won it that year. Had a good year in 03 but struggled a little bit in the series loss to the Wild so he walked away, before he couldn't play as well as he wanted.
