Is this the longest active touring period ever without Crash Into Me?

5 months since last play as of yesterday. Looks like about 50 shows without it. Quick review of DMB Almanac makes me think this is the longest they’ve gone without playing it.

I’m sure folks will disagree, but I feel Crash Into Me has a deeper stamp on pop culture than any other DMB song. Even more than Ants.

it's become somewhat rare the past couple of years, which is strange to me

Right. Seems like they played it at every venue in 2016, which made it the highlight of show for casual fans. How do you skip your biggest hit for so long? (I know it isn’t highest charting hit)

Dave thinks he’s a perv now that he has kids would be my guess. I also think this logic is wonky, with Shake Me in heavy rotation last year and a few others.

Wish it was played more but glad I got it last year.

i dont think dave cares about crash into me's place in pop culture or the band's history. i'm pretty sure he, at one point, said that crash is the song they'll be remembered for but it should be ants instead. considering that most acts who have been around this long have songs that they HAVE to play every show (think if billy joel doesn't play piano man, the crowd would riot) but there's a 60% chance of NOT hearing one of DMB's most popular songs at a show, i don't really see crash going missing as an issue or anything all that noteworthy. every song besides ants has had at least one period where it pretty much disappeared from sets.

Dude changes the lyrics to the end the last few times I heard it, and always prefaces Say Goodbye by saying it’s a bad idea. Just something I noticed is all.

He used to talk about masterbating at shows. Said he did it 2-3 times a day to keep an even keel. Wonder what his family thinks about all that.

I would take it at every show. Studio is one of my favorite things this band has done. Blows You and Me out of the water as far as radio singles casuals know

Last time I saw it was 2016 at the Gorge and I do the Gorge weekend every year. It’s so rare to me, I actually stay and watch while everyone goes to the bathroom.

Although I disagree with the idea that "everyone goes to the bathroom" during Crash at the Gorge, it is interesting to look at how often it's been played there.

    1996-2012
Played 17 times (only missed year was 2003, which was a 2-night stand)

    2013-2022
    Played 3 times

Even when Dave is (usually) trying not to repeat songs over a 3-day weekend, Crash is still not really on his radar.

Nothing wrong with it taking a break. I recall WWYS took a break in 97 and 98

I’ll take Crash Into Me at every show under one condition. It’s like the LT 7 version.

Cscott and I talked about this briefly before Hartford this year…

The band should be playing a few hits at every show. The hardcores still appreciate these tunes and the casual fans won’t leave disappointed. The Avetts do this well, where they play their most popular songs, the closest things they have to “hits” at almost every show, but still play another 18-20 songs each night, changing up their sets every night. It’s really not that hard.

At this point Dave should just be using some software program to generate sets and drop/swap whatever tunes he doesn’t think he can handle that night. Fill 3-4 slots with hits each not, pull Bayou from the rotation, and get some input from the band. It would do a more equitable job of letting fans hear more and different tunes.

they DO play "hits" regularly. they're often the songs that people here complain about being played too much. jimi thing was a single back in the day. so was that girl is you.

here is every song that they have release as a single and how many plays they had this summer, including a few that were supposed to be singles but weren't. what from this list would you call a "hit" and what ones are supposed to be played more? if anything, playing more "hits" like dreamgirl and i did it would only make the sets worse.

Singles do not instantly equal hits.

Ants, billies, crash, DDtW, y&m, SMTS, etc. are songs that casual fans know & hope to hear. The band could/should play 4 of these a night and still have a huge amount of flexibility w/ the rest of the set. I’m talking each of them getting played during at least half of the shows…every other night or so. I lack enthusiasm for most of these songs, but I’m not the only one at a show & I’m good w/ any artist appeasing the casual fan to an extent.

Per billboard, these are dmb’s biggest hits, the Hot 100 sightings:

    https://www.billboard.com/artist/dav...t-history/hsi/

And several of these are played, but most are not being played at at least half the shows, some are rare, others need to be liberated if we want to hear them again. Again most bands play their biggest hits almost every night of the tour, DMB might play some of them for almost half of the dates. It’s like the sets are better because they play them less. I’ll take most hits over Bayou and several other songs that we’ve been hear ad nauseous for the last few tours.

there are 32 official singles, with 3 other would-haves, plus the some devil singles that i forgot to add. if you want them played every other night, that means 18 out of ~20 songs are going to be from a group of ~36 songs. people already complain about sets being repetitive, this would be MUCH worse.

they already play a ton of these songs regularly. Dayton had 5 singles in a row to start the show, 10 total singles, plus WATM which will be a single. chicago had 8. minneapolis had 7. omaha had 7. salt lake had 8. even MSG had 8 and 7. during the summer tour, 12 of the 20 most played songs were singles. they don't need to focus on playing any of the singles any more than they already do. and some of the other songs on the list were warehouse, 41, and nancies, which are arguably more popular with the crowd than most of the singles.

if they just focused on playing their singles and their live "hits" that aren't singles like warehouse and 41, they would play like 50 songs a tour and thats it. every show would feel like a copy of the previous.

Singles are just the songs an artist/mgmt want to feature with the hope of becoming popular, but do NOT instantly = hits.

The band has about 10 hits that should get played during at least half the shows, in rotation of about four per show. Hope that clarifies things. Cheers.
